@26:18 😂 😂 😂 None of the carpentry/construction work that I’ve done ever used most of these. Everyone I’ve seen keeps it simple. I don’t have any formal training so was curious about this stuff. It’s bringing me back to H.S. math. Though I’m quite good in math, I don’t use more than the basics so I forgot some of these things. Good refreshing every once in a while. 😀
Watched this 20 times.. I take my test in like 45 mins I hope this helps

Never too late to study
I really don't know how relevant this is. I took the test back in 96. Basic high school math. Now here's the important part. Once we were in class everybody used a calculator. Except me. I slowed the whole class down. Wrote everything out on paper. So I made sure I learned it. Never helped me in the field. Everything is pre-built. Do you really think that you are going to get to use your brains on a union job today. Only speed matters. You will use this a little. But unless you are a special talent and being groomed for success. You will never get to cut stairs or rafters. However, I do believe that all of this is important to know. And there is a need to eliminate people who don't want to be or shouldn't be there.

I am a finish contractor and this type of test is merely showing your ability to learn and think quick! I use a const pro calculator for brd ft, ln ft, sq ft, volumes and add subtract often in my head to configure total ln in cabinetry! And so on! However make no mistake in order to be successful you must use basic math constantly & consistently correct!

I know math can be intimidating, but if you start at the beginning and go slow to really get the ideas, you can figure it out. It just takes time and work and you'll get it. If this is what you want to do, put the time in and figure this out.

ColfaxMath hello, I stepped away from my Diesel mechanic trade. I’ve been a mechanic for 4-5 years I’m 23 and recently left diesel behind pursuing carpentry. I’ve always had a thing for building projects and sheds and dog houses. I’ve been working for a contractor who has good reputation here in Monterey County CA. But I’ve only been doing concrete work. Long 10-12 hours pretty heavy material. As far as joining a local union what do you recommend or advice me to do? Great videos btw!

If carpentry is what you really want to do get a job with a high quality contractor. You might have to sacrifice a higher wage for more learning. The good builders out there have alot to offer and in no time at all you can start doing side jobs to add income.

I am having a problem on how to Multiply Question 11. 3/7 x 5/9 x 1/2 =
@ColfaxMath
Жыл бұрын
Multiplying is a lot easier than adding. You multiply across the top and across the bottom. You can reduce first or afterwards. The numerator would be 3x5x1 equals 15 and on the bottom 126. So the answer is 15/126 but can be reduced because 3 goes into both to give you the reduced fraction 5/42
16 goes into 17 one time so its 1 1/16 is confusing because then wouldn’t every number under 32 go into 16 only once, making it always 1 1/16? I know I’m missing something
@ColfaxMath
2 ай бұрын
if it was 19/16 it would be 1 and 3/16. For numbers under 32 you would go up by a 1/16 for every number you go up

Near the end of the "tutorial" you stopped showing how you got the answers and just answered the questions. Not to mention that you skipped right over the long division question and when you moved over to the fractions it seemed that you're just putting numbers out of the air.... I have had no need to do this type of math in about 30 years and now I may have an opportunity to start an apprenticeship and need the help brushing up on my math....
