    Summary: 1. Corson Technique 1. Pinpoint EXACTLY where the confusion is 2. Use spaced repetition software to promote Spaced Repetition 1. Wanikani 2. Anki 3. Method of Loci - memory palace technique! 1. Imagine walking through a house with information plastered all over the walls. Walk through the same route during recall. 4. Hack Akrasia - working against Procrastination 1. Get commitment devices (Beeminder) 2. Short-term rewards 5. Improve the Pomodoro Techniques 1. Experiment with the Time Intervals (e.g. 45-15) 2. Write down distractions on a piece of paper 6. When learning, use both focused and diffused thinking 1. Focused thinking only uses Prefrontal Cortex; good for problems you already know or understand 2. Hence, use diffused thinking to help with learning 7. Gauge your classes (match speed at which professor move + speed that you understand) 1. Pre-read lecture notes 2. Ask questions 8. Start problem sets ALONE 1. When your friend solves a problem that you couldn’t solve, you’ll listen to their answer and say “I kind of get it.” Not good enough.

    Dynamite presentation and good detail for these advanced techniques. Regarding tip number one, asking the right question, this can also help others. As a graduate student, I stopped in the professor's office just before class and discussed my specific area of difficulty. The professor used my question to start off the class. I think he realized "if this guy doesn't get it, maybe others are confused as well."

    You are kinda lucky! When I was in university, we were not allowed to ask questions before the class but rather after, and in 50% of cases, the teacher would tell you to send an email. As I go back to uni next year, I hope the system will be different! Your teacher is just a genius!

    I was che only to make questions (a lot), result? The only who knows something, and now the only who answer to the questions I maked, (professors checks if the students remember, I maked the question and I remember the answer:). Listen,think,ask,understand,remember, use it in life. This method works.

    This channel is a blessing, I'm 28 and decided to go back to shool (1st year japanese), I have been working very hard from september on, but around the end on october I got sick and felt I was working a lot but not really knowing if it was efficient or working, and I have to say I felt very discouraged and found myself doing less and feeling guilty about it. But thanx to this channel, I found out what I was doing right and what I was doing wrong so I know what to keep, and it makes me hopeful and enthusiastic again. So thank you VERY VERY much!

I like them because, as you say, many techniques given in college texts and classes aren't that effective. You use many that I use, and then some. Well done!

    The Method of Loci is incredibly tedious and time consuming, but it's brilliantly effective. I used the method when I was taking up Plant Taxonomy and we had to be able to identify 500 - 700 species of plants in the field (plants' morphology change much depending on different factors which makes the subject incredibly hard and is feared upon in our college) including their scientific and family names by the end of the semester. Thanks to this tip, remembering latin names came easy. Thanks for the info by the way, I'll try implementing the other techniques in my studies.

    I like the tip about breaking a problem down into sentences, and being able to pin point where a problem is specifically. Also, I like the concept of focused versus diffuse thinking and it's relation to the promo door technique. I also agree with your suggestion to use a calendar reminder tool, especially now that I am aware of akrasia and increasingly spaced intervals for better recall. Thank you.

    Fabulous is a habit app I use to "pull myself together". I have three routines I use everyday and of couse you decide for yourself how many and how long those is. Among my routines is "studying" and "reading". There is a timer that you can pause and play and i love that i can hear music while the app is active. Also it gives a little sound when you have been doing your habbit for i while so you don't have to look at your phone all the time and there is also a little icon that show how long you are in the progress. Good app for keeping yourself at work and for getting new habits 😊

    what do you suggest to do on study breaks? previously in high school i would go on my phone, but then my 15 min break would turn into an hour

  • @Cazaril

    @Cazaril

    7 жыл бұрын

    I would set a timer, and get yourself in the habit of going back to work as soon as the timer goes off. You can literally do anything, just make sure you aren't doing anything study related in those 15 minutes. I would suggest walking around as you were just sitting for a while. Maybe do some chores, eat a snack, talk to someone, or check your phone if you want. Just relax your mind on your break by doing tasks that soothe the brain rather than challenge it.

  • @tbirch55

    @tbirch55

    I would not recommend talking to others. Do something that requires a moderate degree of physical/mental energy on a specific task. I use such breaks to organize my work space -- or just a specific area of it.

    These are AMAZING tips! It really goes to show how much research you've done into these techniques, and it shows you've really put them to use! I've been searching all over KZread looking for a video that offers good study tips and, you're right, they're all very basic compared to this! Thank you so much for all the videos! A side question: If diffused thinking is more effective learning new material, then should this method be implemented during classroom lectures? If so, how should one go about doing this?

    My advice to you is this.. If you are in your freshmen or sophomore year you should really look into what interests you in the field. I say this because soon you will not have the time to pursue what you want. Your personal projects will suffer greatly.. but that is the price that must be given. If I had to say though.. I would look at maybe some web technologies. That is only because my own path had lots of opportunities for me to make some side cash doing these things. CS does not really expose us to web development.. but.. it is becoming more and more a job only we can do.

    tip 8 was super helpful, I always worked with a friend in physics and together did well but when we both sat the mock exam separately we struggled as she was better at half of the questions and I was better at the other half we definitely relied on each other too much and so didn't work as hard at the topics we weren't as good at. luckily we realised this before the exam. Work with others only when you need the help or inspiration, otherwise try to figure it out on your own

    I'm really glad you meantioned the method of loci, it's a really deep and usefull tradition, with the right tools and enough practice with assosiation, you can use it to memorize anything. If you put some effort into fleshing out the tecniques it becomes easily the best tool for learning and processing on a deeper level, it's so much more than simple recal of mundane facts, it has been used in the mideval tradition to change yourelf for the better by memorizing wisdom and virtues

    +Jara Greene (greenexjara) I'll throw in my bit of knowledge on this, I think it can help. The whole concept of "studying" for a language is wrong. You have to feel the language, you need to get into the culture of the specific language. You need to hear it a lot and you absolutely have to speak it as often as you can. From there on, it's not that hard. Try to find a native speaker and teach him your native language instead, that's a great way to learn super fast. That and watching Tv shows and movies in that language. Reading also helps but that's secondary. Speaking from experience here, I'm fluent in 4 languages (English is my third) and I'm learning Russian atm, which is much harder than anticipated.
