🟣 MY JOURNEY AS A SLOW LEARNER
In primary school, most of my time was taken up by sports, mainly rhythmic gymnastics.
At one point, I even competed to represent my state and was training for 9 to 12 hours a week. That meant that I definitely prioritised sports over my studies. However, I sustained a back injury at 12 years old during a rhythmic gymnastics competition and so all my sporting activities ended there.
In secondary school, I had no more training and so I had nothing else to do other than study but because I had neglected my studies for so many years, I did not have any idea on HOW to study. I had no guidance, no study tips and definitely no KZread tutorials.
So I really struggled A LOT. My foundation in mathematics and languages were terrible, and I was not understanding concepts as quickly as my friends. It was super frustrating but more devastatingly, it wrecked my confidence.
Over the years, I discovered my own quirky little study tips. Now, not only have I caught up, but one of my favourite things to do is learn about anything and everything. I love watching documentaries and picking up new skills in my free time. I can also learn new things very quickly now.
So the purpose of me telling you this is to let you know that it is completely possible to improve. It is also normal to feel frustrated but you need to tell yourself to not give up and to move at your own pace. I mean, the tortoise did win the race right? Not the hare ;)

I feel like many slower learners actually succeed in the end more. As a fast learner, I can say that although I understand things the moment that I hear them, I’m less likely to remember it in the long term. Slow learners are more likely to start to take the time and effort to internalise what fast learners already know, and thus can retain information longer. To all the slow learners out there, I believe in you!

I had a 3.5 gpa until now, and I am a junior in college. Then I just had a really bad semester and I got mostly C's. I'm below the gpa requirement for my degree program, and I only have one semester to bring it up. I'm so worried about it, and I don't even know where to start. I would compare myself to others when I couldn’t understand something or kept messing up because I didn’t double check my resource. Now I just own being a slow learner no matter how others see me, I still got good grades through hard work even if I didn’t fully understand the lecture.

I’ve always thought learning languages (like Spanish, French, spelling and grammar etc) has always been more intuitive to me but I think my memory has been helpful in learning sciences, and rigorous (Asian!) teaching has boosted me in maths than what I think was my “natural” ability. Also, thanks Faye, I really appreciate that you mentioned the slow learner frustration - I’ve also been guilty of this, even though I was aware that it didn’t make a difference to my actual learning capacity, but I guess I’m not the only one who felt like this before! I wish I’d found this before :’)

I'm usually better at learning languages than science and math but I've realized that over the past years I have really hold myself back in a lot of subjects and told myself that 'm just not naturally good at it and I'm not "smart" enough. And instead of studying, I set myself up for failure because I already had the expectation in my head that it's "hard" and I can't do it no matter how hard I try, which is obv bullshit. Now I know that even if some subjects don't come naturally to me and I need more time and guidance for them as science-ones, it's completely okey and I can understand the material in the end just as well.

I used to be very bad at math and science because the teachers would stay on my head because I was slow, forced me to use their methods, and memorize. So I was better in English because my mom helped me (she couldn't help me with math and science because she learned it in another language) But ever since we went online, I got really good teachers that made sure everyone understood for science, math and English. So ever since that year online, going back to school I finally got good teachers and I understand the subjects (My math teacher literally explained the stuff I learned in previous grades so I can understand the new material) Sometimes, its not you, its the way you are being taught. I was forced to memorize and use specific methods my whole life. Now I can do everything independently because of the help of my teachers. I even became a fast learner! 😊
