How to structure a K-Pop song with Monsta X

Song structure is one of the most important aspects of songwriting. Today we are exploring the most common approaches to K-Pop song structure, and explaining why they work. We highlight numerous song structure examples from Monsta X’s discography, and we show how one can break all the song structure rules in favour of storytelling.
We are looking at the most common K-Pop song structure and explaining how the rule of three connects to it. We explore how song structure can make a song catchy by placing the chorus in a key position. And after explaining all the rules, we show how someone can craftily break them in order to further enhance the message of their song.

I love MonstaX because they are not like other Groups, they always do like experiments that's why there songs are so unique

The way they arranged the song makes the song feel short. Like you are running, through the song and it suddenly stops. It's interesting because even though we are running it's like it's slowing down at the same time. The end verse and chorus feel less powerful but also feel faster, so when the ending hits it's abrupt. It leaves you wanting more. This song can easily be looped and listened to many times just to scratch that itch that the first listen leaves.

Yes, that’s a very smart way of arranging a song too as it makes you come back for more and more! The verse and the chorus flow into one another in a way which makes you almost want to loop them endlessly - which is a fantastic way to signify a difficult to leave toxic situation (or in this case love/relationship).

Monsta X is really unique to me because they have explored and experimented with countless genres and styles for the 8 years they've been around- but they keep a consistent "color" that marks the song as theirs. I wonder if its because over half of the members (4 out of 3 counting Wonho) are active producers of their own songs and others? Either way, to me, no one else compares to Monsta X. They're purely a gem ...

Nice analysis! I agree with your analysis of Beautiful Liar with the song structure being an artistic choice. The whole song itself is a Beautiful Lie. There were many fake outs and "lies" that the song applied to confuse the listener but still make it addicitng/interesting enough to repeat it. I would argue though that the song structure, melodies and song delivery goes hand in hand in order to actually pull off this kind of "breaking the rules" approach to a song. They were able to mask the first chorus as a verse if you were not paying attention because of how each of the members' vocals have different unique textures, and the choruses (?) Being sung in different intensities and registers everytime it was sung. Monsta X never shied away from being experimental and they always deliver. Jooheon's penned title tracks and songs, most of the time tend to experiment on song structures and imo, are ahead of its time. I appreciate what you're doing with your channel, technical song analysis is kinda lacking in the discussions inside the kpop community and i think your channel gives insight and a different perspective on the kpop genre as a whole. Thank you for featuring Monsta X and hoping for more success to your channel. :)

Thank you, glad you’re enjoying our content! ☺️ Agreed about there being more to the structure itself when it comes to a song (wouldn’t it be too easy otherwise haha). We mentioned arrangement - e.g. in Beautiful Liar IM’s opening chorus verse is a lot more minimalistic, while the choruses afterwards are busier, with the octave harmony on the topline especially standing out to us. Of course, performance matters a lot too, the choruses are sung more powerfully with more conviction! It’s a really interesting topic, and we’ll certainly go into it more in the future! Love how involved the members are in the music too, really looking forward to what’s to come from Monsta X, both as a group and solo!

Totally unrelated but the more I see the word "Chorus" the weirder it looks. Had me questioning if that's even how you spell it at one point. That threw me; anyways, about Monsta X: Their unique song structures go back to their Rush (2015) album "Gone Bad" is a great example. [INTRO; VERSE; PRE CHORUS; CHORUS; POST CHORUS?; VERSE; PRE CHORUS; CHORUS; POST CHORUS; INSTRUMENTAL BREAK (Faked outro?); POST CHORUS; OUTRO(for real this time)] For "Beautiful Liar" I think the thing that makes it work, is that it's not for show or cheap shock value, it has a reason and it's related to the story telling of the song as an entirety. I feel like that is missing a lot in KPOP. Another example of this is "UNDERWATER" by Monsta X, it's jarring and could be a little disorienting but it's someone being begged to save them from being underwater. If you use a diving board as an analogy for love, then you could say it starts with being nervous as you approach the end of the diving board, but you decide to take the jump and it's fun and refreshing. Then there is always a moment when you're kind of like "oh sh*t, I need air," and you almost panic, and it gets a little scary, until you breach the surface and realise you're okay again and it's beautiful. Anyways, sorry for the long comment, I could talk about their music forever lol, I just love it so much.
