You did a great job. I appreciated the explanation on the level of effort required up front, and the editing you did to show us all the steps and results of a 4 hr job in 14 minutes. Appreciate you sharing your knowledge and experience.

Thank you for your honesty in the effort and time required for a major project such stripping a wheel. I will watch the remainder of your project videos on series on "How to strip, sand, and polish aluminum wheels".

I've used that stripper stuff a lot. It works much better if you give the painted surface a little sanding with some aggressive paper or scotchbrite pads, lets the stripper get into all the layers easier. I've noticed before what you talked about with chemical settling, so make sure you shake the can well before starting. I like hitting the stripped surface with one of those scotchbrite drill attachments, cuts the paint off pretty good.

Great video. Great explanation. And great way to save money! Depending on where ya go places gouge, the company we use for blasting through work charges by the hour. And it's 140 $ an hour.. Pretty ridiculous for some pressurized air and some beads. I redoing a set of rims right now I have a scotch bright wheel on a 5 inch variable speed grinder couple passes and your down to bare metal with a fine polish. Each rim took about ten minutes and I didn't lose any material. . But not everyone has access to random tools lol.. Thanks for the video!

Stripping and repainting wheels properly is a hell of a DIY job. Yes, you can do it quick if you just scuff the existing surface and paint over with cards around the tyre. To do it properly by removing the tyre and valve, stripping, sanding, prepping and painting is a big task. Just going through it now on some old school steel Corvette wheels so also have rust to deal with. Thought I'd just wire wheel the rusty parts and then realised under the paint surface had rust veins all over that were likely painted over by a previous owner. Now feel obliged to do them all properly. I have learned to remove and refit tyres myself, replace valves, etc though so all around has been worth the effort.

Didn't think removing/refitting tyres was something you could do without special tools/machine, but then I've never really given it any thought. Now I have it seems kinda obvious… Grateful for your comment because doing a proper refurb on my wheels is now much more affordable!

I did mine in the sun and I can almost see the sun lines on the wheel. These were very cheap wheels with ALOT of black paint. But 2 are about done. Gonna do another round today in the shade. Its also about 60 today not 80. Wish me luck. Thanks for the video

Lol I actually did it the exact same way just this week. I Have four factory alloy mags been painted silver from factory. Was going to just re do the paint but it was flaking so had to be stripped. Now I've decided to polish them as they're good looking mags. But yes, I too wanted to save a dollar & drove myself NUTS paint stripping all four. The factory etch primer underneath the original silver is tough stuff & it STICKS GOOD!!!! Almost impervious to stripper too!!! I use a brass wire wheel in the drill, works great & no damage to surface. Didn't want to get them sand blasted as it pits the surface too much & glass bead & soda blasting here is WAY too dear!!

^^True words. I just started doing my RS4 rims and the layer under the paint is tough as hell to get off...had to use drill with brass head too but it stil can make some nasty lines... so i went for several times of stripper and some hard work sanding. Just dont go into this thinking it will be done quick...just as the uploader also said. But when your finished and rolling on home remade wheels its worth it.

Thank you very much for this instructional video, I will view it again and again to build my knowledge and confidence. Your videos and several other people/organizations on KZread have been great in motivating my self-confidence to extend my comfort zone. Thanks! I am not a mechanic and only in the past couple of years I have attempted to perform basic maintenance on my truck i.e., replaced the battery, troubleshooting my electrical power seats and "service air bag" message both are still unresolved by me.

I recently purchased new tires which are expected to arrive March 29, 2018 at my local Wal-Mart: they will hold them for seven-(7) days, so I can schedule installation with them. I observed over that past few years that the chrome coating on my OEM aluminum wheels has been cracking and flaking off: I have also learned that i did a decent job cleaning them except the inner-side of the wheel - my truck is a 2005 and never stabled in a enclosed garage.

I will inventory my Father's toolbox, but I have a very limited toolbox. I inspected my wheels within the past 30 minutes - kzread.info/dash/bejne/pqJ6uaesZ5XUZ9I.html. I know I will get a better look once I remove the tire/wheel assembly from my truck. Please view my videos and offer your best recommendations because I have approximately five-(5) days to accomplish this major, major feat for myself. This is the link to my tires, which also shows my wheels. kzread.info/dash/bejne/dIKJz6yffZiTZ9I.html - I will try to make videos concentrating on my wheels.

mate for $50 bucks & you could get all 4 bead blasted & have em back in half an hour. Stuff using that paint stripper crudd. It never works in one go,,,or even two goes and sometimes even three goes that stuff wont get it all off.. bead-blasting does make them dull though but nothing a bit of elbow grease & polish cant fix. They say not to sand-blast alloy wheels because of some mumbo jumbo but what about people in the middle east their wheels get sanblasted constantly

dang man...some shops will look out and give you a decent paint job for 800 on a small car! 800 for wheels is incredible...and obviously they would not spend 32 hours on them or they would not get very many customers, so there must be a more efficient way. much respect for your perfectionism though.

I have rims with 4 layers of paint,on for 8 years, going to use the aerosol aircraft remover, then power wash it off, seem videos were they do this and it quick and easy. Some say oven cleaner will take off the paint, but I think the aircraft remover is stronger, more effective.

The black layer is the only paint layer. The other layer is Anodized. All of the wheels come Anodized, and then the company paints them w/e color they please. Why do you think the Black comes off so easy!? It's bcuz it strips paint easiest.

Yeah, but that would only get the loose stuff off and at the same time remove all your chemical as well, and to be honest I would not want this chemical flying every where. Below Joe Toodeep said they torched the paint off, that could be a good idea as well, never tried it or thought of it so no comment as to how it works.
