I've been following you & JW, AC, IFG, MM, etc..... I don't remember who said it, but yes, "big eyes" have found me. Of all places, my blue crayfish's tank ("Lobster"), w/just two, yes, I now know "boy & girl", demasoni's. So, now I've got 5 babies & am doing the best I can to raise them. Thank you for all your info! (We suffer from MTS, and are planning on going all Hap.)

great video, very informative. I just started setting up my first breeding system. I was thinking about separating the female once she was holding and letting her release the fry when they are ready. but I may have to try stripping the female after watching this.

Glad I watched this. I have been in the pet trade for almost thirty years and somehow didn't know anything about this. Whenever I heard the term "mouth brooders" I thought it just meant that the mother moved the frye around in her mouth.

I know this is an old video, but I ran across it because I'm new to the peackock cichlid breading, my question is I recently found one holding, and I moved it into its own aquarium, idk how long she was holding, my question is was I ok to move her where I just noticed she was holding? And how do I know if she will have the babies? Or if they were infact fertilized? Thanks!

Steve, I have a female crabro that's been holding for a little while now, I don't have an egg tumbler, so obviously I want the fry to be free swimming when they come out. I have a separate tank that I'm keeping her in. I want to know what signs or how she will look when it's time to let the fry out. she's already stirring up some food that I had put in there for when they would start eating, but I want to make sure they are free swimming before I strip her and get her in my hospital tank. I have a lot more questions, so I will message you with the rest of them, but if you could please tell me when I can strip free swimming fry from her that would be great.

Hello! I’m new to all of this. I bought a 75 gallon and have cichlids and I noticed possible mating. It now looks to me she’s got a mouth full, I noticed yesterday. I bought a tumblr but would she freak out with me trying to catch her? I’m not sure what I should do, leave her with everyone and hope for the best, strip them in a week for now, or put her in a 10 gallon and let her do her thing and chance them dying? What is your suggestion for someone who’s never had fry before?

Hi... First time and subscribed . First of all I have had my fish spit last couple of days so I missed them . I have tried to pit in some good hiding spots for them to get into .. I have also got one that has eggs in it's mouth ... I will try and strip them but never done it before so I'm abit weary of doing it right . If I just put the mother in a breeding box until she spits them out do i just leave that in the tank and remove the mother ? please have a look at my video and comment and let me no . thanks

I put them in a breeder box that I had but my adults won't leave them alone and keep knocking and biting at the breeder box. What should I do? At the moment I have the breeder box floating in a guppy tank they don't seem to really care but I don't want to keep them there in case of aggression issues. Thanks

Hi Steve my Africian Cichlid has appeared to be holding eggs, this is the first day I've noticed this, I'm 95 percent sure this is the first day with them, at the moment I have her in a 10 gallon tank because I'm waiting for my new tank to come in. She's the only fish in the tank, and I was wondering if I could leave her in the tank because of that. Would it be okay to, or should I remove the eggs in about 5 to 6 days? I bred Ahli cichlids for a few years. It was pretty much a set 21 days, and I could strip the female. I would gently push on the underside of her mouth and she spit them out. Egg yoke and plenty of oxygenated water and the babies grew fast.

+CichlidGuy915 they can be tough to catch, that's for sure. This female is part of a breeding group so she's in a tank that's set up to make it easy to catch her.

You totally can let nature take its course. For me, the reason I strip mothers from their fry is because I feel like the entire process is very hard and strenuous on them. They keep these eggs in their mouth for over 2 weeks, they dont really eat much during this time, and any time the female swims in a place the male does not deem worthy, the male swoops in and beats on her a bit and puts her in her place. My females often come out quite bruised and battered after a full egg holding session. So I just try to alleviate some of that strain by doing it manually and earlier.

Once the eggs have hatched into wigglers like in your video, a tumbler is no longer a requirement. They can go straight into a tank or breeding net.

  • @StevePolandAquatics

+RedDelPaPa I won't necessarily disagree but I like to tumble them until they reach the point where the mother would have spit them. Personal preference I suppose.

Agreed. Won't hurt a thing. Just making a point for anyone who strips their mouth brooder whos eggs have already hatched. They don't need a tumbler if they don't have one.
