How To Store Tulip Bulbs- Best Practices | Wicked Tulips
Hello everyone! This video series was created with our customers in mind who have purchased our unprocessed field grown tulips which we sold in 2020. Normally we sell only bulbs which have been dried/separated and processed. During Covid we decided to sell these unprocessed bulbs, straight from our field, to give our customers the experience of what a bulb grower has to do, to get that nice shiny bulb to you in the Fall.
In this video Keriann and Jeroen are talking about storing tulip bulbs over the summer at home. Store them in a well ventilated container/bag/box, out of direct sunlight, between 65 and 80 degrees until the fall. Do not keep them in an uninsulated shed or garage where it gets very hot. Besides temperature, the bulbs need some air, don't put them in a closed off plastic bag! A large open paper bag/box works great. Be aware mice and other critters will like to snack on the bulbs. If you have any questions comment them below! Be sure to like and subscribe for more Wicked Tulip Tips!

He has the patience of a saint.
Maybe she should have just done her own video and let him speak.
Omg he doesn't need a translator.

Or to be so constantly interrupted
So who won the battle of little or a lot of air flow? I was waiting for an all out Tulip bulb fight to erupt 😂 Thank you guys, it was fun!

Oh you know how it can go, we were both right. You do want to store them so they can get ventilation you just don't need to go over board and have a fan on them but definitely don't store them in plastic.

Lol!!!!
It’s October and I came back to this video because I couldn’t remember when to plant them but in the video as y’all were saying to set a reminder for when to plant them, a reminder popped up on my phone saying just that! Glad I listened to y’all! Thanks for all the tips!
That was helpful. Thanks.
Thank you. :)
Thank you for making such a knowledgeable and fun set of videos on tulip storage, sorting, and care. There are so many amateur videos based on little experience that your series is a breath of fresh air! One question where did you get the large plastic farm tray that you use to store tulips? I currently have about 2,000 tulips and wanted to purchase a few of those plastic well-ventilated bins. Thank you!

We receive our bulbs from Holland in these crates. We sell the bulb crates at our farm but can't ship them at this point. Please email teamtulip@wickedtulips.com
I've stored bulbs in a fridge for the summer after drying. Done this for 15 years with very little issues.

I have heard this from other people but never tried it! For how long do you put them in the fridge? They do need some warmer temperatures as well to develop a nice big flower.

Would storing them in a cellar(that has a dehumidifier) work?

@@swami1 Yes that should work!
These guys definitely share the same social media account
This was very helpful! Thank you for sharing this information! Do you wash the extra dirt off of your bulbs or treat them in any way before you store them?
@WickedTulipsFlowerFarm

you don't need to wash off the dirt or treat them. Actually washing can cause disease because bulbs don't like to be wet.
So I'm guessing that they don't want light. I'll store mine in our cold store room. Thanks guys. Appreciate your advice.

No direct sun light, but it doesn't need to be dark.

I can’t decide if they should have airflow or not.

Yes they need a little airflow.
I’ve got several tulips that were potted earlier this spring. They are dying now and I want to save the bulbs for planting(in the ground) in the fall. Can I put them into a paper bag and then store them in the cellar? Our cellar is dry thanks to a dehumidifier. It rarely gets above 70 degrees there.,

Yes storing them in a dry cellar works fine.
Hebben jullie een nederlands-tallig kanaal ? Dat zou geweldig zijn
Quick Question: can you store the bulbs in a fridge.( I have over 400 bulbs and my garage is very hot. )
@xDIRTYSOUTHx

yes. just make sure they've dried well and toss out any bulbs that may have mold.

Definitely don't store them in a hot garage. If your basement stays fairly cool that is a better alternative. We don't have experience with storing them in a refrigerator, but some people say it works. If you choose to store in the fridge, make sure that you don't have apples in your fridge. Apples produce a gas called ethylene, a natural plant hormone that sets off the ripening process.
Agree
neighbor bought me a potted tulip for Valentine days 02/22, it flowered then it went dormment, can I replant it this spring out side ? just noticed out out side tulips are coming up today

Tulips flower only once a year. The Valentine tulips were "forced" in bloom. These forced tulips are usually not rebloom the next year. But you can give it a try!
I once put some harvested tulip bulbs into open paper bags and old nursery pots inside a shed. One day I looked at them and thought, hey, didn't I put more bulbs in here? Even later I found a little "nest" with lots of empty bulb skins in an old bag of pine bark. Looks like the mice have enjoyed their meal. Other bulbs were eaten by some kind of moth caterpillar, so next time I'll store them in closed (breathable) bags.

Yes unfortunately mice and other critters love bulbs. Basically storing bulbs at a place mice live, is not a good combination. I recommend setting mouse traps next to where you store your bulbs.
what about storing them in pantyhose like onions?
He struggles with both his thoughts and English; she should have just done all of the talking. But...helpful in the end. Thanks.
This video was much longer than it needed to be. So much interruption and rambling. Great advice but please edit!
