The simple solution for preventing the sleeves from sliding off when putting it into the shelf is to not pack so many albums onto the shelf. Remove 4 or 5 from each shelf and they'll slide in with ease.

For those wondering, not all shrink wrapped single jackets bow with the slit method and not all unwrapped jackets don't bow. It's pretty much random and it's not necessarily based on jacket quality. I have an unwrapped kid cudi gatefold that bows a crazy amount. Outer sleeves are good for all the records you can get them for.

a way of storing your records I have found out about is where you put the album cover in a plastic outer sleeve facing upwards then I take the vinyl record and put that in an inner sleeve and I put the records inside the outer sleeve behind the album cover so I can just take out the record without having to take out the whole album.

FYI- Vinyl Storage Solutions now make a dual-pocket sleeve with 2 'tuckable' flaps as opposed to the glue strip..The cover flap is on the bottom, then the rear pocket flap is on the top..nice to see a company provide so many options!

Been keeping records in poly outer sleeves for decades, slid in from the side to make it easy to remove the records (with poly inner sleeves). To prevent the dreaded bunching up, I keep two 12x12 sheets of card stock handy (in my case, pieces of LP jackets that a record company had used for packaging). Sandwich the album between the two sheets to keep the sleeve from catching on adjacent albums while inserting it into the cabinet. Then pull each sheet out, leaving the sleeved album behind.

I got the anti-static inner sleeves off eBay very cheap. The ones that are half semi circle shaped at the bottom so the bottom part of the sleeve is shaped like the record and so makes it a lot easier to pull them in and out of the outer sleeve. I love those sleeves, I bought a load of them and pain stakingly put every one of my records in one, it took me an age as I’ve got close to a thousand records, but definitely worth it as I have the piece of mind knowing that all my vinyl are protected and are easy to take in and out whenever I want to listen to them. 😊👌🏻 Great video though mate, thanks very much 🤟🏻

Hi there, my name is Larry and also something that I really like to do is when I remove the shrink wrap from the album, I remove the hype sticker from the shrink wrap by blowing on it with a hair dryer on the hot setting and this removes the hype stick pretty easily even on older records from the 70's 80's & 90's! What I then do is place the hype sticker on the outside of the poly sleeve and it looks really nice when the vinyl album is in the sleeve!

I use a solid 3mm poly bag for the sleeve. I then put the record in a mofi sleeve behind the album cover (all in the 3mm poly bag). I've found this to be the best way. Buy the MOFI master sleeves, or something comparable. The cheaper ones start to turn yellow after a few years, and I had to replace them all.

Nice video. I'm one of the people that likes to keep the factory shrink on. Mainly so I don't have to use a plastic sleeve for every record. I've got records from the mid 90's still in the factory shrink that are totally fine. A big cause of warped records can be gatefold jackets. If you push your records right in close to the spine of the jacket the fold can cause the records to warp. And yeah, that thing with the plastic sleeve sliding off the record when trying to put it away drives me freaking nuts!👍

Gavin Young awesome! Yeah I have a few I just split the seam on and kept the wrap on. It’s mostly old unopened shrink wrap records that are warped. I am always weary of sealed copies of older records :) a lot of labels have been using sealable poly sleeves lately. Pretty cool!

As mentioned, storing records stacked horizontally is bad. Because of gravity, after a while, the recording surface starts to ripple (like a dancer's skirt when she stops spinning), as it droops because the hub & labels are slightly thicker than the recording surface. re 1:26 I noticed some of his records are leaning. After a while leaning, both the cardboard sleeve & the record will begin to bend or bow into a potato chip shape, bad for the sound because it forces the plastic to stretch slightly & if bad enough, part of the tone-arm could touch the surface during play. So the end records don't topple or slide over and bend, as his will, I just swing a handful of the end records like the pages of an upright book (about 40-50 degrees), so the back edge of the sleeves are held upright by the shelf back and the other records or the shelf divider. A similar option, if there is just a few inches of unused space, is to swing all the records in a shelf partition so they are all supported exactly vertically by one partition at the back on one side, and the other partition at the front on the other side, keeping them all vertical. BTW: Another storage hint: keep your records cool. This is obvious if you ever kept any wax masters, but vinyl records are a relatively soft plastic, which (like wax & glass) is not truly solid, and the warmer it is, the more susceptible it is to scratch, wear, & deformation. I hope these suggestions help you cherish your collection.

The Vinyl Storage Solutions inner sleeves are great as well (and they have the rice paper which they claim reduces static). Not sure why you didn't give them a shout-out. I'm in the process of conserving a collection spanning 60 years, and their sleeves are working great. I'm also using their dual pocket outer sleeves with the flaps, and so far it's working really well.

shrink wrap def can lead to warping. i bought a brand new record a couple of years ago and opened it, i saw it playing like a warped record but I thought it was just my felt mat. turns out it was the record. i think the shrink wrap also affected the sleeve a bit too. a more extreme example is of a record i got where the previous owner just slit the side and kept the shrink wrap on, i looked at it and the record is warped and the sleeve isn’t in the best condition either. definitely recommend buying plastic coverings esp since they aren’t that much and are a good investment in your records

Nice and clever outer sleeve. However I have never liked the having the record outside the cover technique. Mostly because I also enjoy back cover artwork. I know it helps protect the disc yadda yadda and many people like it because you can see the actual record label to see the detailed track listings. I prefer seeing the back cover as well as the front. When I was really into listening to vinyl in the 80s and 90s I knew my collection well enough that I didn't need to inspect the detailed track list unless I was having a tough time deciding on what to listen to. Keeping the disc outside of the cover isn't for me aesthetically.

For gatefolds look for 12.75 x 12.75 outer sleeves. Most plastic sleeves are 12.75 x 12, with the 12 being the width of the opening. These are generally too small for gatefolds.

  • @TheAboriginal1

    @TheAboriginal1

    Жыл бұрын

3mm is the same thickness as most outer sleeves so I'd imagine those are more difficult to get in and out the jacket. I don't think the extra thickness is all that helpful if you're storing the record inside the jacket and the jacket inside an outer sleeve.

  • @TheAboriginal1

This is how I store mine and I prefer it. Outer sleeve opening pointed up with the inner facing left (so the disc doesn't fall when you take the inner sleeve out) behind the jacket. Really saves the corners of the jacket from wearing down and also it's just a lot easier to play a record this way. Only downside is you can't see the back of the jacket unless you pull the disc out. But, I use clear inners so I can just see whatever track list is on the disc label facing out. Try it for discs you play often because it's so much easier.

As long as you store your Lps the proper way- vertically inside protective sleeves, not too tightly packed together, ring wear is not an issue..And when the cover is not inside the sleeve, don't drag/slide it on any surfaces like tables or cabinets...Ideally whenever it's not in a sleeve it can be stored upright in a Lp display stand..

Supposedly if you take off the shrink wrap, it detracts from the LP's value. I don't know why. I've had shrink wrap on LP's since I started buying them in 1964. I just knew that the cover would get worn out without some kind of protection over it. So my Beatle albums still look pretty close to new.

And the main reason for having the record sleeve on the record that way, is to protect against dust surely?. Put the outer sleeve in a poly sleeve. Put the actual record in a MoFi inner sleeve. Store the record on the outside of the record sleeve inside the poly outer sleeve. Don't remove the shrink from your records, especially if they have hype stickers on them. It will decrease the value! IF record isnt stored in original jacket you won't have any warping issues. THIS is the best way to store vinyl records.

Is it ok to store vinyls flat if theres only a small amount of them? Ive only been collecting vinyls for about a year so my collection is extremely small, i dont have a lot of storage space for them right now so ive been keeping some of them flat, only stacking i think 6 on top of each other. The other ones i had vertically like the other ones you have in your video

Should be fine but once you get more than 10 start storing them vertically.

Nice tight fit there. You'll love the ringwear in about a year. You can keep it in the side pocket..it will just press a ringwear from the outside. Your crow record is also gonna have serious scratches kept in the paper inner sleeve. Good vid though!

That Canadian company that you mentioned has inner sleeve protectors too. Also, I've been buying vinyl since 1971. But, I've only just gotten back into it. I have some catching up to do as far as protection and styluses. BTW, I'm still using my vintage Realistic LAB 400 turntable with the vintage stylus still on it. I haven't actually played anything on the turntable since the early to mid 80's. I just purchased a new belt and a new Audio-Technica at95e stylus with cartridge and shell which is scheduled to be here Saturday.

Hey man, so I ordered these sleeves and my question is if an album comes with two records, would you recommend sticking both records in the outer pocket sleeve? Will that ruin them over time being so close together? Thanks!

These are great tips! Thanks! I have my mother's album collection which is at least 50 years old, no exaggeration. I will be ordering the inner sleeve for the LP's. I have always stored these vertically as you advise, but these old album covers have warped. Some records have warped but not to the point the sound is distorted, thank goodness. Anything I can do to return the cardboard covers flat? With the protective inner sleeves for the vinyl, I don't want to place it back into a warped cardboard cover. Thanks for any advise you can offer!

I’ve also heard putting the record sideways in the outer sleeve will prevent less ringwear on the outer sleeve

What about records that come with special inner sleeves, not the cheap paper but the ones that are more like cardboard and have art on them like that crow ost, should I replace those too, or are they cool?

I would replace them because that cardstock its printed on can stick to your record and damage both the vinyl and print. Best thing to do is replace it and frame that extra artwork

DO NOT THROW AWAY ORIGINAL INNERS. You will tank the value of your record. Put the disc in a different inner sleeve and just keep the originals within the jacket.

2:32 all of my sleeves look like that even though I always stored them vertically, is this normal? from all videos and guides I've watched you are the only one that mentioned this issue, you say it only just annoys you, but I want to know if it could be a potential danger to the record or if the sleeve will eventually get destroyed or something

You could be storing too many records on each shelf. If it’s super tight sliding the record into place than it’s too tight.

@@VinylforMiles I actually only own 5 of them haha, I'm quite new, they are currently sitting inside of a bookshelf where there's space to store them, thing is that the sleeves with the records inside would try to fall upwards so I placed one of these plastic CD racks in front of them so that they wouldn't fall, its positioned right in the middle of the sleve and I guess thats what causing that pressure which isnt present on the sides, causing the sleeves to look like that, so far the records are in perfect condition, but I'm worried something might happen to them in the future, which is why I'm currently searching for something specifically designed to store em...

I just did the sliding the record sleeve behind the album tip and it’s giving me a little anxiety. It’s in a mofi sleeve, but I can’t help but think the pressure of being stored between other albums will somehow ruin the record like that. It’s my OCD collector anxiety talking.

I use that method for discs I play a lot. Like you, I do worry about long term storage with this method. I wouldn't recommend squeezing a bunch of records like this on a single shelf because it's true that the vinyl is less protected if it's not in the cardboard jacket. But for records I play a lot they aren't crammed into a tight shelf anyway.

Great video dude...those Vinyl storage solutions sleeves are pretty clever, and solve the major problem with resealable outer sleeves- P.I.T.A to open every time!! I've also discovered the Square Deal inner rice/poly sleeves, they are great and a bit cheaper than the Mofis...

What I do so there is no pulling out of the album jacket unless you want to is to insert the album along with jacket cover on the back side. That way I can just pull the album out without messing with the jacket. This also helps avoid wring wear. The double packet are cool.

Great video. I appreciate you taking the time to put this together. One tip though, 1 mil is .001 of an inch. So your 2mil sleeves are .002" thick, the 5mil are .005" etc. A 2mm sleeve would be well over 1/8" in total thickness. Keep up the good work.

I don't know if you've changed your method of LP storage in the 3 years since you did this video but coming from the collectible comic book market I can tell you that sliding your cover, or sleeve that has artwork on it, in and out will eventually cause color rub. Not a good thing. That's how you can still end up with scuff marks on your cover/sleeve. I would want a solution where the sleeve is either permanently stored in the jacket or in a separate pocket in a quality holder. The LP would go into a plain, Ph neutral (or whatever Ph is best for vinyl records) cardboard sleeve (to protect the surface of the LP), and into a multi pocket mylar holder, or the type of plastic used in most comic book protective bags. The bag itself should be large enough to not put any pressure on the contents. i.e. leave a mm or three gap on each side.

Put the original inner sleeve in the jacket and use a different sleeve like the mofi rice paper to store the disc itself. Do not throw away your original printed sleeves.
