I dig this new wave of vinyl collectors. I’ve been doing it for decades and settled into “the way I’ve always done it” I saw the backspacers on Facebook and came looking for other ideas and the refile/new vinyl bin and lights were “holy crap! How did I not think of this in 30 years???” So thanks! Great ideas!

I'll tell you what I did - I have over 3,000 vinyls. All I did was go to Home Depot and buy my own plywood. I bought 6 long 8 foot 11 inches of plywood. And 2 of those plywoods I cut into 10 pieces. 13 inches in height. Glue and srcew them all together. I measured 22 1/2 inches for each space inside my dividers (5). You do not want to stack to high. So 30 inches is enough height for both stacked together. Then I took 3 milk cartons and placed 1 each at each end and 1 in the middle. And believe me those milk cartons will hold anything. And of course I have every vinyl in a-z order. By the way it cost me under $250 for the plywood (from 976-CREOLEMAN)!

I used 5 gallon wood paint stirrers, cut to the proper length (13.5 inches) then glued 1" letter on them (did the same with craft sticks for the CDs) I used 1x4 for the "stops". The lighting is a combination of LED automotive accent miniature light bars. For overflow, I build record cases out of 1/2 inch copper tubing (stays with the steampunk motif)

Dude, this is awesome! I'm gonna try the light thing too I think. I have a 12 cube Ikea Kallax, and am already in need of a second. For overflow, I use a black plastic crate that I picked up for a song at Home Depot as my new purchase bin - it works beautifully. I also did the backspacers idea when I first got it, using thin bamboo strips and velcro - works like a charm! Love the video! Thanks for the great tips!

I do wish Death Cab would do a vinyl-specific mastering for Plans, the existing release is just the CD mastering cut to vinyl and it's not bad because it's not hyper-slammed like Kintsugi is, but it would be nice to hear a wide-open, dynamic mastering like the DSD-mastering they had Ed Brooks do for Transatlanticism that both the Kevin Gray and Ryan K Smith vinyl cuts (Barsuk and VMP respectively) used. Sadly Chris Walla was the audiophile in the band, I don't think Kintsugi would have been such a victim of the loudness wars if he was still controlling various production aspects. It was 100% thanks to him that Transatlanticism received an audiophile mastering for the SACD and vinyl releases.

I've been collecting vinyl records for years, but only just started getting serious about taking extra care of them as part of an ongoing collection. Though I am new to your channel, you've given such great tips and advice essential to upping my collection game. Thanks to your advice, each of my records are now fully protected with their own outer sleeves and the recommended poly inner sleeves (no static/damage here!). I just purchased a similar cube storage system (it should be here in 2 days, YAY!) to house my ever-growing hoard of music and would LOVE to win these spacers to go with it! Thanks so much for everything you do!

Handy to mention; when mounting led strip, do NOT drive tacks, staples, nails etc through the strip as it may damage internals. If extra hold is needed then use staples that span the width of the strip or tack next to the edge so the head holds it. Car rear window defroster repair kits from auto parts stores work to fix broken led strip conductors if you can't bear to throw away broken strips ;) Also, there are lots of inexpensive materials available for making filing cards if you enjoy a project. I hope you end up putting tape or something over the edges of those metal tags where they overlap the card to avoid possible 'aaw, CRAPs' in the future. Cool video, I'll be looking for more.

Great inexpensive divider option is... I found 11" x 14" thin plastic cutting boards (think plastic sheets) at my Dollar Store at 2 for $1, so it cost me $13 for 26 dividers,, I bought a pack of alphabet stickers and stuck them on the end .. I just cut the 14" length down to 12.75", and they stick out just enough for the letters to show between the albums.. works great

Cool man. I have the same storage cubes with the same pattern. I’m at almost 1000 records and the filing folders are a great idea. I have wooden dividers that are like: A - D, E - H, etc. You could even be more specific and write a genre on a tab. I might look into that. One thing I would say is to move those speakers away from the side and back walls. Speakers need room to breathe.

I own the Ikea Kallax shelving unit. The extra space at the back doesn't bother me. In addition to LPs, I also collect 78 rpm shellac records. It just so happens that an album booklet for 12" shellac records, fits perfectly in these cubes (height and depth). To each their own on how to organize. I do it loosely based off of year/genre. To me it would be strange to put Brahms next to Bowie. The "newly acquired" crate was a great idea.

Why I think those back spacers would work for me is cuz like you said I always have albums getting pushed all the way against the wall sometimes I can't find an album and it's because it's been pushed so far back it's hiding between two. How many LPs does this cabinet hold. I have 2,000+ of EX vinyl. It covers 3 decades of Rock, Blues, Jazz, Comedy, and offbeat hard to find audio. I'm looking for nice solid storage. I have room for cabinets. You've sold me on adding LEDs.

This holds about 450 records (depends on how many double LPs you have). If you have the cash I'd recommend the Ikea storage shelves over this one as they come in larger sizes and are more sturdy. Also be sure to secure the shelf to the wall with earthquake straps or something similar. Do you have a discogs? If so please share!

Yeah it’s not ideal for focused listening but I have no where else to move them given my space. I guess I have too many records and need a smaller cube to let them breathe lol Luckily they don’t touch the storage cube that has my TT on it which was the goal. I tend to broadcast my records via sonos lately and listen throughout the house.

Re the backspacers, I leave more front space, so I can put one nice record in the particular section of the alphabet with cover facing out. A real cover is nicer than the various spines. With a bit of scrap wood and any saw, the back spacers can be made at home for close to zero cost. I would not buy any, so easy to make. I made my own "arrival bin" (for me more of a current rotation bin) that also has a top display area for the record that is currently spinning. I would also suggest to not stuff each cube to the gills as it will reduce the frequency by which one has to shift everything. You can use library L-brackets to keep records upright, remove them once space gets less than 1". In your video, I hear a lot of slap echo and speakers are right against the back wall. I would invest in some sound absorbers (or make your own with a 2" wood frame and some Roxul 80), and pull out the speakers from the back wall. Will make a ton of difference. I made absorbers from a discarded trucking palette, covered them with printed fabric (etsy) showing some of my photos. Adds a ton of flair to my vinyl den. LED lights, hmmm. I might use some to get better white light onto the records I pull in the evening. Will ponder that for a while. The color lights are a bit too gimmicky for me, but that is a matter of taste, of course.
