I’m tired of the ‘always positive reinforcement’ kind of training. It’s my first time getting a puppy, however I’m noticing how much my puppy does not respect me after the first week of training. She learns fast but only does my obedience training when there are treats. As soon as I researched deeply as to why, I noticed how bad I actually am at training. I’ve only been teaching my puppy how to do more bad behaviors to actually get what they want. I’m relearning everything and will be redoing every single training I’ve done. I’ve been looking for this kind of channel, finally found one. Thank you so much for your videos! It definitely helps us a lot.

I am in the same spot as you. Have had my pup for 2 weeks now and it seems, especially when walking outside, that she has no connection with me and is just doing her own thing. What also seems to make it difficult is that she doesn't respond too well on any kind of treat.

Thanks so much! I rescued a German Shepherd a couple months ago. She's 4-ish but tonight I was doing yoga and she came over and for the first time wanted to play. Then it became rougher with some gentle play biting. This video helped me to put that in perspective and see what I need to do next time that happens. Firstly, I'll put her in place to keep her off my yoga mat. I want to continue being a leader and not a littermate!

My boss back in college flopped down on the floor into a fake sob because all the students were popping off with crazy incidents in the dorms one night. Me and my coworker had long ago accepted the fact of life that young people are immature and we could probably handle whatever involvement was needed. But when our boss acted like a toddler in front of both of us, in public, we had no words. That is the one thing we couldn't handle mentally. So we awkwardly walked away from her curled on the floor and no one helped her get up 🤣🤣

So in March, I got a 1 year and 4 months old Golden from a family that didn’t have time/attention to give him. I’ve noticed that a lot of these puppy behaviours have stuck with him and now that I’m about to get my Dane puppy, I’m doubling down on training for him so the new addition won’t catch on to unwanted behaviours! Thus reinforcing (KZread's) magic formula: Leadership - Relationship - Communication. You've got us well trained Will, and we stand with you. Thanks! Update: I used the Touch correction on my 10-month Doodle & she jumped back!, froze and looked at me with that spring-brain doodle look. She hasn't tried the teeth again on our wrestle sessions. When she gets too worked up I redirect to Tug to calm me (and her). I want to repeat this lesson but after several days she just hasn't used her teeth again. It works!

I’ve been a new dog owner for about 10 days. This is the same advice my Mom gave me. ❤ somehow hearing it from a stranger who trains dogs makes more sense 😊. Puppy is teething, so this is a work in progress but I did learn that my pup bites at me when she’s bored. So, we go out for a 10 minute walk and by the time she comes back in she’s ready to listen and behave and chew on what I want her to chew on

Thank you! I’m from a small town and we only have a handful of trainers. The most popular one is “positive reinforcement only”. It’s so annoying! I’ve learned more from this video than any puppy training video out there! I’m so glad I found you.

I've done the " role model" training for 15 years cool to hear it validated, Unfortunately my last baby passed before I got another pup so now it's back to square one which is fine just always nice to have a little bit of the previous pup in the most recent pup. this is my 3rd dog/friend hoping with everything I've learned with the other 2 (R.I.P) will make this one a breeze.

Great video. So clear and concise as to what should be done, but more importantly, how futile misguided 'solutions' will be. Your boot camp sounds like it is the answer to so many potential problems if deployed properly.

I love your videos, you've prepared me for training my new puppy and i follow your advise the best I can. My biggest biting problem is when we're going out to potty and back in/getting the leash and harness on and off. In that time it don't feel like I have the time to verbally correct, take attention away, etc. (Go through all the steps) because if I do, most times he'll do his business on the floor right then! He's just started asking to go out but until that's consistently early enough to do so the steps and prevent accidents in the house, what do I do?!?! Then when we come back in, he's so excited to be in that the verbal corrections don't get his attention and he'd be happy to just leave his leash and harness on and is impatient about getting them off. This part is improving, and impulse control is improving slowly, but for now, my hands and arms are covered in scabs and the biting when going out is the thing I'm not seeing improvement on.

Just purchased your Boot Camp course in memory of Mabel. The House Rules are the best I've seen explained. I have a 6 month old English Mastiff and we have been implementing some of your rules but not all. Time to buckle down and crack on. Just picked up all the toys. Will report back with the progress. I had a pit bull mix with severe dog aggression before and had to resort to punitive old style of training (after disastrous result with positive only) , which did help me with managing the behavior. A friend of my hubby turned us onto your videos, your phenomenal ! Tons of tips for our 4 month old American bull dog. I have a question regarding his older brother, an 18 month old American bull dog- he is so well behaved and such a great boy- but he lacks confidence- how am I able to build that for him- so I can tale him for a walk and him not be scared of a mailbox or a tree.

Your videos seem so helpful! I will definitely try this on my 10 week old pocket beagle. She has been biting me like crazy! Also I love your way of training!😊 We have an older dog who is 5, a the labrador retriever that was trained wrong. Once I found your videos they really opened my eyes on how to train dogs the right way. For starters, too many of us were trying to teach her sit at the same time. She learned, but has other behavioral issues from my family yelling at her when trying to train her. (Myself included) I realized that yelling only makes the dog more aggressive. We would Yell at her when she would nip or bite, we would yell at her when she got on the table or furniture, etc... We know now that what we were doing is wrong. Now I want to make it right by listening to your videos. Again, thank you so much for the helpful videos!😊

I really enjoy your videos. I have a three month old Doberman puppy who Generally does great with this technique. There are others on the Internet who teach a similar method but also include a muzzle grab if the dog fails to respond to this tactic. Are you in favor of that method as a potential next step when necessary?

I am so pissed off. I rescued a puppy a week ago and have been having problems with biting. I didn't know that the reason for yelping was to make your dog think you're their litter mate. If I would have known that then I would have known that these websites were full of crap. Thank you for having this channel. It has brought back a lot of knowledge that I learnt from a friend years ago who was a dog trainer/behaviorist that specialized in dominance/fear-based aggression cases. I used to be a dog sitter and walker but I forgot a lot of things once I retired years ago.

Wow... Cut through all the BS... Watched some so called "dog whisperer" videos on KZread and they tell you to yelp etc... The way you've explained it totally makes sense! Why a pup listen to you as a leader if he early hurts and upsets you. He'll think your under him/her within the pack. Makes total sense mate! Thanks for sharing this. Pure value!

My brother has a year old pit puppy, hes an amazing pittie hes very energetic and very sweet and listens well(to me ive learned where as my brother struggles with him) and im watching all your vids and saving the ones Mozee needs! One thing i loved is your like "aaaa", with me i use a stern "excuse me sir(or miss)" or just "excuse me"(my brother does more physical nos or yelling) and for me thats usually returned with a very "oh sorry!" look. Im hoping to help my brother earn better respect from his dogs(his 2 other small ones are also very difficult) One thing i do personally need help on is how do you teach a dog to play with toys? slowly my maltipoo is starting to chew and play with her toys (when were not looking, she usually ends it scaring herself) but shes very timid of them (shes about 5 and i dont think shes ever had toys, we think she was at one point abused) and i was wondering if you have any tips? right now we started with a kong and peanutbutter filler for it and that seems to get her going.

Question….which of your programs is best suited for a 16 week old lab? The boot camp or the puppy training? Thank you!

It depends on what your puppy can do already. If they don't know obedience or simple manners, definitely start from the puppy course.

Today is day 2 of the dissappearing biting puppy. It got his attention the first time i did it. This works . Consistently is a mudt. Thankbyou so much! Im off to boot camp. Gunner is a German Shepherd, almost 4 months .

Hi Mr. Atherton! (Apologies in advance for this lengthy comment.) I hope this finds you and your family well. I just wanted to reach out because you mentioned that if the verbal and minor physical corrections do not work and in fact ramp up your dog you might have a larger problem on hand. I think that I might have that problem. I just got my Cane Corso puppy almost a week ago when he just turned 8wks old. He has a really hard time not biting shoes (especially shoelaces) and cords. I not only subscribe to your KZread, TikTok, and Instagram, but I have also purchased the Cane Corso bundle on the Will Atherton Academy site. I am going through the puppy course now and am just wondering if there were any videos you'd recommend that I need to watch that I might not have already. I have continued to use your Pavlovian pairing technique to try and get the verbal corrections to have more weight and I think it might be working a little because he (Finan) will listen and stop and redirect himself but other times it ramps him up. He is, in my opinion, very well crate trained he doesn't really cry when he is in the crate except for when he might have to go outside (I also have made sure that the crate is not used as a punishment in a circumstances, and he will eagerly go in there with his toys) and I have been socializing him in dog friendly stores (almost everyday) and when I am not out and about with him I have the TV on with a variety of shows/sound playing to expose him to. I don't know if he just starts to nip and bite more when he is tired/overstimulated or if it is more serious. Do you have any recommendations as far as time he should be around more stimulating environments and when he should take naps? He does seem to nap a good bit. Also he sits very well (I make sure he sits before I give him a toy and play with him) and I don't really have a problem with him jumping up on people, but I don't know how to get him to look up at me when I saw his name, and then when I withhold the treat to try and get him to look up that is when he starts to jump up on me. I just wanted to message because Could really use some advice, my parents - I'm 16 - just think its puppy things and to not worry, but I know the bite force of his breed and the danger of this being a bad habit that continues and how hard it will be to get him to stop later on in his life. I'm "solely " responsible for his care and training, hence why I'm reaching out. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I am interested in your puppy course. How does it work? I just got a Cane Corso puppy, and he is now 8 weeks old. This is my second Corso. My first one passed away this past June . He was a rescue and already trained when I got him.

Question: (I have a 10 week old German Shepherd black lab cross puppy) How do I stop/correct a puppy from chewing on furniture? It happens when I walk out of the room for a moment, she doesn't do it when I'm in the room. Not sure if she's doing it because she's bored?, has anxiety when alone?, or doing it to relieve teething? She has chew toys and I'm worried if I don't leave a chew toy on the floor by her dog bed then she will find relief from her teething on other things like plants, anything wooden like corners of my stairs or coffee table legs. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, thanks so much and amazing video. 🙂👍

However a couple times she has surprised me and gotten my toe, and my genuine instinctive reaction was to kind of yelp “owww”. It hasn’t happened much because I keep a close eye on her, but the times it has truly taken me by surprise, I don’t think I reacted well. Any advice on that?

Hi Will, I love dogs - the ones I know that is, and am fearfull of any and all dogs I do not know (have been bitten in past). What I would very much like to learn is how to recognize a potential dog that can bite (out of agression or out of play) so I know what dog I can and cannot trust instead of fearing all I do not know. I think more people would like some tips - especially parents with children, as a child likes all dogs most of the time. Perhaps do a series on going to a park and showing dogs there and explaining what you see and how you spot it....just throwing ideas. Anyways, would love to see some of those kinds of videos and I think you're the perfect expert to break it down for people who aren't experts. Huggles!

Hi Brigitte, I read your comment and want to try to explain my view on this in hope it will help you. If you are anxious around a dog, the dog will pick up on it which is not an ideal situation. Especially when you are dealing with an unsure/unstable dog. In that case I would recommend to not engage or pet a dog when you are anxious. The other problem is that a general rule should be that you shouldn't touch a strangers dog without asking the owner if it's ok and if the dog is friendly. This should be explained to children, since this is an important rule not to go up to strangers dog and pet them. I would recommend to work on your fear of dogs in a therapy or counselling setting. Even if I would explain to you the body language of an unstable or fearful dog it wouldn't solve the problem since you are anxious and like I said dogs pick up on it. Maybe it is a good idea for you to engage with the dogs you are not afraid of (the ones you said you know already) to loose your fear of dog and look at their body language. Since you asked I will still tell you the signs of a fearful dog: stiff body, lip licking, flattened ear, avoiding eye contact, avoiding general contact, raised hair on the back, tucked tail. I hope that was helpful :)
