What I absolutely love about these videos is that you see so many dog trainers and experts preach that if you don't train a dog within the first 3-6 months that you lose that window. What you show is that no dog is a lost cause, even if they've had nothing, been abused, mistreated, whatever, if someone is willing to take control and take command, you can help better that dogs life tenfold.

My wife and I used to foster Akitas. It’s not impossible to train, it’s just harder. When you’re training a puppy, you can put them into a position such as sit or down then praise. It’s a longer process with adult dogs simply because you have to out maneuver them.

I need a new service dog, and can't do a puppy again. I'm really hoping to find a shelter dog that can be trained. It's good to know they're not a bigger challenge just cause they're older.

How can some misguided person spend all the monies that a dog like this costs and then not trying to inter act in an appropriate way and try to integrate in to the family as a. Family point of interest of nothing else but to teach the children what happens and respect animals that you own but the attempt to make the dog look tough speak volumes of the owners nature toward dogs ,best of luck with him, from the little I know of this he may well become a nice house dog.

No, there is virtually no lost cause in dogs. Some of them are because they have very danerous habits like attacking children. But for the most part, that is the only lost cause in a dog. Other than that, there are only limitations. For example, abused dogs will never perform okay in a guarding and protection job. Old dogs will never be the best for crazy obedience and tricks. Dogs that used to fight other dogs for sport will not be the best for homes with lots of dogs or owners that wanna go to the dog park. And even dogs that have attacked people, those can be corrected, but it is not okay to put a human life at risk to preserve a pet life. It is what it is and humans have the upper hand when it comes to who should we protect the most

@Will Atherton Canine Training Hi Will, I thought you might like to know this. I've just fit a boiler in this dogs new home. He's now called Sid and is very happy and looking much more healthier! He didn't seem to have any anxiety or behavioural issues at all so is clearly made up to be given a new opportunity on life. The owners can't thank you and the shelter enough as Sid has been wonderful for them.

Sorry to sound ignorant, what does “fit a boiler” mean? How wonderful that Sid has a new family who loves him. He’s an amazing and sensitive dog, I had tears listening to what people had done to him. It shocks me repeatedly that people are so cruel. I’m a dedicated subscriber because I love how Will Atherton works with rescues to help dogs get adopted, that’s my dream too even though I’m a petite senior woman. We have several rescue dogs in our pack at home (in Florida) and have room for one more so next week we are scheduled for a meet and greet with some GSDs to see if one of them will fit into a our family. I am so grateful for Will who not only helps these dogs be a better version of themselves but helps us too by teaching us to become better, kinder, wiser dog trainer versions of ourselves.

I volunteer in a shelter here in California. We have many adoptions every week, but very very few are larger breeds like Shepherds, and pit bulls. This boy would never have had a chance where I work. You've shown all of us that a rather scarry looking dog, of a feared breed can actually be a very sweet, loving animal. I see from the comments, he was adopted, and the new owners love him. You've done a beautiful thing, Will. Congratulations! You've inspired me to try something similar, but not being a certified trainer, I really don't know if anyone at the shelter would take me seriously. I've watched enough of your videos to know how to guide adoters the correct way, but without certification, they are not going to let me be associated with the organization. I do feel that offering training classes to those who adopt large breed dogs would increase the number of adoptions, and save many lives.

I rescued a Lab/Staffy and it took me a long time to not only understand her needs and to understand how to best work with her. It took hiring a professional trainer to teach me, but after 9 months we are now dialing in the way we need to be. Inspite of her bad habits my girl is loving, loyal and sweet and coming along well. I am her world AND SHE IS MINE. Yes, add more in this series, please.

Even my perfectly hearing dog responds to hand signals for most of his commands even when I don’t use the verbal command too. It’s a very powerful tool to have even with hearing dogs! It means that if we are in a very noisy environment he still has very clear signals and knows what I’m asking of him. Really loving your videos, not only are they helpful but get my enthusiasm for training right up!

She cried when I picked her up, she had sore ribs and kept to herself. Now She is the first of my dogs to greet me in the morning or when she sees me. She will always be lame but she tries to keep up with the other dogs.

Happy to give kisses to people..and ppl he don’t ereally even yet..is at least a pretty good sign to me. For any dog to go thru what he did, his first years in life..what he’s experienced at the hands of people..I would expect and opulent blame him to not trust anyone, let alone be friendly and give out kisses. His potential seems to be outta this world..and so happy for that and for him..means he’s got another chance at a fantastic, healthy, and loving kind of life still, for himself!!☺️🙏🏻🥰

Hi Will, just started watching your vids, I qualified as a dog trainer with imdt 14years ago but have not been actively training for 10 years. It's really good to see you showing how effective positive reinforcement is in a practice way that anyone can see and follow and your demonstration of active correction clearly shows that you're not 'punishing the dog.. Your vids are great for me to recap the fundamentals as I'm being asked to train fogs allot now since the announcement of the new legislation targeting xl bully type breeds. I've already saved 3 xl bully's from being put down by helping the owners fully understand the deliberately convoluted government laws/guidelines and doing some basic training with them to help with lead walking, muzzle training and general 'loving leadership' as you put it.. keep up the good work mate, If I had the space I'd have a sanctuary/kennels just for unrehomable dogs and any dogs I couldn't get trained for rehoming I'd keep to live full happy lives

Great videos - love how clearly you explain to viewers and your dog. Can't wait to see more on this sweetheart! Reminds me a lot of my last dog, who was a Corso X with butchered, home job ears and nerve damage on the side of his face (we assume from being hit). He was a neglect case that nearly died of heartworm and was left with heart damage. We had him nearly a year before losing him to complications from his DCM medication. When I went to meet him, he was shut down, suspicious, and stand offish. We went back a few days later to pick him up and the second he walked out that door, leash in my hand, he did a 180. He never let on for one second that he had been horrifically abused and was hands down the best dog I've ever had. Miss him everyday.💔 Wish this one could be shipped across the pond. 🌎

His coat reminds me of a friend’s cathahoula leopard dog. So handsome! My recent rescue girl is a little, approx 3yo, 40lb staffy x shar Pei who has already had at least two litters of pups according to her intake records, and was taken along with multiple other dogs from a “sharpit” breeding operation. They were all kept on chains outside and were malnourished, riddled with ring worm, and filthy. My girl has a significant scar on her neck from the chain. Regardless, she is a very sweet, social girl, but very afraid. She is also as stubborn as a mule, and when outside, even after three months, still barely makes eye contact and is on high alert the entire time. These rescue dogs, especially the ones with medical and abuse considerations, can be very hard work, but it’s always worth it. Thank you for giving this boy a hand up!

Absolutely beautiful pup. His intelligence is very obvious. A great little lad that anyone would be lucky to have as a pack mate :)

You are a good person, way to many people all over the world abusing or giving up dogs because they are lazy and did not expect a pup to be that much work.

I love how such a tough-looking guy says so seriously: "I'm gonna build relationship", like he's on a deadly serious mission and it's such a warm loving thing that he's doing

What wonderful work! I'm excited to see what will become of this wonderful dog in the end. That's how it is sometimes: a horror that turns into something wonderful thanks to compassionate people like you. My endless respect for this work and a thousand thanks for sharing your knowledge. Learned so much here that helps me build an even better relationship with our three dogs (all rescued ;). Thanks

I just found your videos and have started using these tactics with a one year old bullmastiff cross that we brought home from the humane society. Within a few hours, I’ve been able to build significant trust between the dog and myself and feel that he is getting set up for success. So grateful for these videos!

Thank you so much for doing this kind of video and also fostering dogs like this. It always breaks my heart when the animal has to take the consequences for their owners's lack of responsibility and knowledge. Many dog owners either do not understand or even know how important good leadership is for any dog or don't know how to do it correctly. By educating your viewers, people like you help make the world a better place, seriously.🤘

We're in the midst of training our almost 6 month weimaraner mix to be a perfect gentleman and so far he's doing really well. We're working on leash manners and I'm always worried about being too rough but I think in reality I'm a little soft sometimes, watching this gave me some great pointers!!

I was always so grateful that I’d been encouraged to use but verbal and hand signals when our old golden retriever went deaf. It’s so easy to do with a hearing dog, but could be a life saver later in a dog’s life 👍 Great video 👏👏🇬🇧

I’m a first time puppy owner. Happened spontaneously. Absolutely adore my bulldog puppy. You have really really educated me let alone my pup. You are fantastic!!!! Absolutely amazing to watch and the foster dogs are given more structure that unfortunately some children will ever receive in their life. Truly amazing. Thank you 😊
