It’s difficult for ppl who’s brains are wired for addiction… That one bite just leads to more… Some ppl actually need to abstain certain foods. It’s like alcoholics .. or other addictions.. 😢 .. it’s me. Very hard. I have that kinda brain.

These points are the basic premise of a group program I completed through my local community health centre here in Canada, led by two dieticians. We met once a week for three weeks and then had one additional meeting just to chat and reinforce what we'd learned. I have lost just over 60 lbs. and have maintained that loss for several years. It was a slow process; the first 50 lbs. took five years, but with a change in lifestyle and thinking I have no trouble whatsoever maintaining my current weight. I eat whatever I want in moderation. Mindfulness is key.

Feeling comfortable with discomfort...excellent advice! Earlier today I sat in McDonalds parking lot talking to a friend. My plan was to get a coffee but as I sat there, my mouth hunger was triggered by the picture of food on the building...and I started craving a Big Mac and fries too just because I saw a picture! As I got off the phone and in the drive-thru line I had a moment of reflection...yes, this would taste pretty good (not as good as it used to when I was a kid but...do I really want to do that? ) I'm glad the line was moving slowly b/c the answer was NO! Today I was strong...and seeing this video now is confirmation that this is to be my new habit! Reflection. Be in the moment...and wait. Today I came home and made a delicious salad of spinach, arugula, salami, cheese and olives, plus a big batch of steamed broccoli. I felt so much better afterwards than I would have if I had given into that momentary craving! Thank you for your wonderfully fun and informative videos! Your guests are always awesome too. Y'all must have a lot of fun working together.

@@racingfan same. I know KZread pushes creators to make longer videos. But so many of them could be compressed down to Shorts if they removed the chatty stuff and only included information. Lots of other people like the chatty stuff, I guess, so there's no good answer.

@marley7145 Just telling people what to do never works. You know what to do, but not why, or sometimes not even how. Saying that educational videos should be compressed to 1 minute or less is stupid. Do you study for exams for 1 minute? Do you practice a skill you want to learn for 1 minute? No, of course not. You need more time to actually understand the information! I do agree with you to some extent though. This is a bad example of a long-form educational video. They chat way too much. The video could be cut down to half it's length and still have just as much information in it, and it would he easier to process that info as well.

This was a very good video and a really good one to save and share. Very good advice. I’m a Type 2 Diabetic and in the beginning I enrolled in a class on how to deal with diabetes. We went through guilty pleasures. The dietitian said go for a short walk which is where mindfulness comes in. If you still have the craving (she used ice cream as an example) then use a small bowl and treat yourself but not everyday. Have a few small bites and then go for another short walk. Thank Dr. Marrone for us.

Incredible video! I know few people who would be exempt from it! I'm not a stress eater and when I'm facing an uncomfortable situation or confrontation, I can't eat. However, I do like to have a little something sweet after dinner. I often have some type of candy or cookie on hand. And sometimes one piece of the candy or a cookie will do. Sometimes not.😉 But I really like what Dr Marrone said about talking to yourself like you would talk to a loved one! I think we're all too hard on ourselves! Even new diet plans are having people figure out why they grab something bad to eat and even what they grab. Eating is a very psychological thing. And eating something that grandma used to feed them is very comforting. Then there's watching TV late at night and seeing all the commercials for chicken wings, pizza and ice cream! Great tips about waiting 10 minutes, distracting yourself or finding other ways to occupy your time instead of grabbing something to eat needlessly. I've said this before but I'll say it again, this is certainly food for thought! 😁 But it's good food for thought! These are very good tips you've given us and they're things we can incorporate into our lives easily! I love how how many times you said love!😘 So maybe Dr Weening will start saying, "If you love this video, then Like it!", and Dr Zalzal will add, "Love yourself!" This was a very feel-good video, thanks for sharing!

Great video. I can still remember the day I woke up and suddenly had no more interest in eating sugar. It was weird and I don’t know why it happened, but now, almost two decades later, I still almost never touch the stuff (one square of very dark chocolate a day, and I’m sure some sneaks into my diet in other ways). When I asked my doctor about this, he looked at me and said, “If there’s any one thing it’s okay to lose interest in, that’s it.” But why it happened remains a complete mystery, because I still love the taste.

We need to monetize wellness in our insurance industry! Doctors need to be able to sit down and have a wellness conversation with every single patient, talking about exercise, mental and emotional wellness, and nutrition! It should be the first thing that every doctor does with every new patient!

Lovely thought but untenable in the 21st century. Early to mid-20th century GP's knew you and your whole family. Sometimes they even came to their patients home to treat them. Certainly in the office they spent time with the patient and got to know them and their environment in a holistic manner, This gave them the information they needed to give practical advice to each INDIVIDUAL. Today medicine is a for-profit business and patients are cash cows. The more people a doctor sees in a day the more he/she can bill. Big insurance dictate to physicians how much they will pay for each visit and testing. It has gotten so bad that doc's can't practice as they would like. Insurance tells them how many minutes to spend with each patient if they want to get paid. Most conscientious physicians days are way longer than 8 hours. They are burning themselves out and retiring Early. As Dr. Marrone said, medical school still doesn't teach preventative medicine. There isn't time in one video to consider the barriers to the doctors excellent advice. Things like food deserts, poverty, lack of immediate role models and intrinsic cultural norms are real. Mental illness and the meds to treat It that often have a side effect of weight gain are real.

After just having our daughter, I used being super tired from that as an excuse to get back into emotional eating and it sucks. I was rocking it prior and for some reason, my brain just took having a kid as a GO to head back into bad habits.

I think that understanding that eating and food can be an addiction is helpful. It's not just overeating, it's some of us are addicted to getting that hit to our brain from eating. I know I have that. I try to cut out as much sugar and refined carbs as possible since those are triggers to an escalating binge. It's almost like once I get going, I gain momentum and can't stop. So now, I might overeat for a day or two and want to keep going but then I stop and think, ok, you are in the clutches of it. Pull back and eat more lightly for a day or two to break the cycle. Usually that works. It's so hard to lose weight once I put it on, so I keep that in mind too and that slows me down, too. Just maintaining the same weight is a goal for me cuz it sure beats gaining weight. Also, yeah, nobody's perfect. You can't expect that of yourself. Do your "bad thing" for a day or two and then try to consciously pull yourself back. It might take a few days to get back on track but that's ok. It's better than binging for a month, gaining a bunch of weight and then being stuck at a higher weight. I used to have that horrible thing when I got into the habit of getting up in the middle of the night and eating! Boy did that mess with my system, and I put on a lot of weight that way. If I ever feel like doing that now I just have to be firm and tell myself NO. Maybe try to put the really destructive behaviors in the absolutely not category but be more lenient with other stuff like eating closer to bedtime than you should or something. These are just my thoughts as someone who has now struggled with eating and weight for quite some time. Also, when I was a teenager, I was anorexic for a while, and I think that messed with my appestat or whatever it's called and set me up for lifelong weight trouble. Another reason not to glamorize being too thin which can easily slide into anorexia which can actually set you up for obesity in later life! Great video.

I kicked cravings by doing the opposite of what nutritionists and doctors have been saying since about the 1980's. I cut carbs and sugar completely and went carnivore. I have virtually no hunger, steadily lose weight (about 55 lbs since mid January), I don't take hearrburn medication anymore and my blood pressure dropped from 147/92 to 107/72. The only thing I missed was something crunchy which lead me to pork rinds. I used to be more or less addicted to sodas, chocolate and just about anything full of carbs like pizza, subs and burgers. I lost all of those cravings in about 2-3 weeks when my body adapted from a carb based diet to fat based diet. Ravenous hunger isnt even a thing for me anymore, even when I decided to fast for 48-72 hours. I used to feel like i was starving after just 4-8 hours on a standard diet. The additional benefit is wearing old clothes from the early 2000's again so I dont have to buy a whole new wardrobe from all the weight loss.

Yes elimination style diets like that often have early benefits because of getting rid of processed food, sugar and refined carbs. Unfortunately it’s not sustainable or healthy. Animal products are simply missing so many vitamins, minerals and micronutrients. All the best

@@TalkingWithDocsIt's completely the other way around. Plant based diets lack close to 20 nutrients. Vitamin A, b6, b12, choline, creatine, carnitine, coQ10, cholesterol, EPA, DHA, zinc, selenium, iron, calcium, iodine, protein, vitamin K2 etc. The list goes on and on. The only nutrients of concern on animal based diets are calcium and vit b9 if you don't consume dairy and organs. Doctors should really stop shilling this USDA slave food pyramid

Hi Docs, I saw the link to donate to the Oakville Foundation and that reminded me that I did but I don’t remember if I mentioned what happened? Hey, it’s an age thing 🤷‍♂️. So, a couple of weeks later I receive a call from a very nice lady thanking me for the donation. I didn’t donate a million dollars but she thanked me so much like I did. I asked her if she knew why I made the donation, she didn’t, so I explained that it was my way of thanking Talking With Docs for what you guys do. Then there was a pregnant pause. I asked if she knew TWD’s on KZread. Nope. So I explained what TWD’s is about and I gave your names to her. She didn’t know either of you. 🤷‍♂️. I hoped that she would go on KZread and look for you. I used your link so I assume I gave to your hospital? That’s my story. Again, thanks for all you do. 👏👍👌👋🖖🙋‍♂️🍻

Stress eater here. I do have to admit when I had my s*it together and went to the gym and biked every day I didn’t experience anywhere near as much stress and I could actually focus on caring for myself. Exercise released dopamine and endorphins. Loving yourself is hard. Not getting caught up in the day to day is hard. Getting positive reinforcement from the wrong thing is very hard. BTW… the second and third spoon of ice cream thing is the law of diminishing marginal utility. Good video, great content, wish I could buy into the “mindfulness” aspect.,

Hey Dr Marrone, there's a concept in micro economic theory called Pareto Optimization. It's often illistrated by asking you to predict how many slices of pizza to bottles of beer you need to consume to achieve maximum happiness? Personally I'm about 3/5, slices to bottles. So, your happiness and not over eating model is a variation of the old Pareto model. By the way, about a year ago I suggested, respectfully, to Dr Weening that eating a roast beef sandwich once in a while would improve his happiness. He yelled at me. I would never make it as a psychologist. Anyway, your presentation is personally useful. Thank you.

Thanks for starting off with chocolate cake! Oh my goodness, I fancied a slice . If I may add my penny's worth on this one, I'd say : 1.It might be that you need to actually eat more, but better and in a different way. 2.Get to bed earlier so it's not so long since your meal and you start feeling peckish again. 3.Brush your teeth an hour or so after your meal. Your mouth is clean and zingy and you don't fancy foods so much. Anyway, you can indulge in two sweet things endlessly with no calories - our Docs!
