Office politics is the scourge of every modern workplace. In this video, I shared 4 tips for dealing with office politics. Dealing with office politics can become a lot easier if we can anticipate and understand its nature. If you are thinking how not to be a part of office politics then this video is for you. Office politics in India is not different from office politics anywhere else in the world. This dark side of corporate world is often obscured by the fact that many people don’t speak up about it to save their jobs.
Those who do speak up about this dark side of corporate career often do so too late. Office politics tips and tricks are not a be-all and done-all. Sometimes, you may need to observe what’s happening around you in the office and make a decision likewise. Work Politics has been a constant problem in corporate jobs. If you get involved in office politics, it only leads to becoming a part of a toxic work culture. This toxic work culture in India is pretty damning because of how it impacts all of us.
Every one of us will become a victim of corporate politics or office politics at some point in our lives. Sooner than later you will realize that office politics impacts the appraisal cycles. This is because office politics is all about seeking more and more power. If the manager likes somebody and there’s someone on the team that he doesn’t like, then he will promote the person he likes just so that in the long run that manager has more influence and power in the company.
This corporate politics is not just about discrimination and favoritism. It can also be that the manager just doesn’t like your work. The manager might say that their personal career is not impacted by the particular work an employee does. Because of this, the manager may stop caring about that employee’s work altogether. These are straightforward examples. Some time down the line the manager may tell an employee not to talk to people in a different team. Just in their quest to control the narrative. Another thing is that the manager’s working style is very direct and yours is not.
As an employee, there are a few things you can do. A fresher should try not to get involved in office politics at all. You should observe for the first few months what is happening around you. You should keep your opinions to yourself. The next tip is to have those skip-level meetings with your manager’s manager. Then you should also try to talk to resource management groups to see if there are other projects you can work on. Lastly, be ready to leave the company if you see no other option.

Can't Agree More. And thanks for making this video. As a victim of this corporate dirty politics i would like to share my experience. I as a top performer got less percentage hike and 0% bonus in this cycle. Whereas the guy with average performance in my team got almost double the hike percentage i got and also 15% bonus. When i asked my Lead she said that all this things are based on various things you can not just ask for hike and bonus on the bases of your performance. Not only this she also said you should not discuss all these things with others it's an HR compliance issue. And also she tried to kind of threaten me by saying that your this action can be escalated to HR Policies non Compliance. So, After all this i decided to drop my resignation paper. Anyone out there who is facing the same problem/issue as i did my only advice would be to just leave the place where you are not valued.

@@ItzGhostHere if you hate the game then know that corporate is full of such power games. Big fish eat small fish is not just an adage. Aa a victim of such politics at the age of 52 and losing my job for the reasons of not playing the power game, i can say that the only way to survive in corporate, as you age into it, is to play the game so ruthlessly that you oust every dissenter if you have to advance. My nature not permitting me to be so am the victim. Things would be getting even worse for the new generation.

@@kevinmathew2973 Office politics is present everywhere. Maybe some countries have it worse than others. Europe is definitely worse than India, US is better. (It may be surprising given the image we have of Europe having better worker rights, but that is the whole point. When you limit how much a person can work, everyone works similar hours and has similar productivity, and thus who to promote becomes manager's discretion. This is why you see so many Indians as CEOs in US but not in UK despite UK having similar % of Indians)

I am facing mental haressment from my manager even worse than you have mentioned. He creates unrealistic situation so that I can't perform and collecting such points for appraisal meeting and to show it to my M2 manager. He dont talk to me at professional or personal level. If 4 persons are sitting on a table he will talk to everyone except me. It started when my M2 manager assigned me something which my manager was suppose to handle but he refused. I handeled the job well. Now he finds for every opportunity to portray me to my M2 as if I am not working properly. He also has bias (favour) towards people of his ethinicity.
