    The most important tip is securing your scratching post from moving. They need to feel that the post is as secure as your furniture.

    I have 5 cats and 3 kittens. I have several different scratching post for mine but for some reason they still go after one certain end of the sofa, along with climbing up curtains (only one cat does this) I decided I would just let them have the end of the sofa since they don't bother anything else. It's well made and I plan on getting a new one within the next 2 years anyway. They have slowed down on the scratching but they don't cause any other problems or issues. I love my cats and they mind well.

    Thank you for the tips!! I think choosing a scratching post the cat likes is definitely key. My cat LOVES his scratching post (it has a mix of rough carpet and rope) but I got him a cheaper scratching post with soft carpet before and he wouldn't even touch it. It was just a waste of money. I think he would love the actual tree scratching post too. I loved the video you included with your cat as a kitten :D

    My cat was a 2-year-old rescue who had been declawed. Fortunately he didn't suffer any pain. He still tried to scratch but not my furniture. I had a wicker sewing box that I put on the floor and he loved to use for his scratch Behavior. He did that too on other wicker objects but he loved the sewing basket the best. I would never ever declaw a cat. You were absolutely correct about what it would mean on a human's finger.

    I just picked up my new furry family addition and he likes to scratch our couch and our cloth pleated chairs. My mom said to get a spray bottle lmao. But I know spraying them like this can ruin a relationship. I have multiple other scratchers in the same room as well! I play with him and do what I’m supposed to, like telling him to scratch the post I bought instead lol. I have a two year old cat and she’s been great at leaning not to scratch my furniture. Although, she does it still on my roommates side of the house. I taught her when she was little by scratching the scratching post and then rewarding her if she scratched it in front of me. It worked! So I’m gonna try this with my new Scottish fold/British Shorthair kitten

    Thank you for this video. I would love to have your cat tree! It would go well with my plants by the window. But it can't be shipped to Denmark 😔 Anyway, Cleo is a vertical "scratcher". She doesn't really scratch on my furniture, as I don't have much at home. I use a tatami mat instead of a sofa. The only time she would scratch a teeny weeny bit on my bed frame is when we're playing. I guess it's from excitement? She likes scratching on her cat tree, and I cut her nails when she's half-awake 😁 Otherwise, she isn't too keen. (My biggest challenge at the moment is trying to brush her tummy and butt areas ughh...)

  • @TheCatButler

    Oh dang! Yeah that tree requires a freight truck to deliver since it’s so big and heavy. Your cat is so well behaved haha. Yeah brushing the tummy can be tough since they are so protective of that area.

    I have two cats. One picked up on the treats for using the scratching post thing and seems to go out of his way to use it just to get the treats. The other cat is totally clueless and still prefers my leather sofa or my mother's favorite chair. She also has incredible claws she won't let me trim yet. She's a rescue cat so perhaps she still has a lot of anxiety and needs to claw more than other cats. Any suggestion on dealing with uncooperative cats would be appreciated. She's not violent, just doesn't want to be messed with.

    @TheCatButler

    Arya is actually a picky eater. What type of food do you usually feed your cat? There are some toppers you can add to get your cat excited about eating their food. Or you can try giving them different kinds of foods to keep them interested. Some cats get bored of the same food.

    Hmmm thats the first time I have heard someone say don’t use a water bottle for scratching. My breeder taught me how to use it correctly. There are steps your supposed to use. And she called it “The punishment from god”. Because what she recommended (for stubborn cats) was that you throw a towel over the water bottle so they can’t see it. Then if you catch them scratching, say NO, but don’t look at the cat. Point the water bottle in the direction of the cat and give them a squirt while still not looking at them. If they see you looking at them when this happens they could equate it to getting a punishment from you. The object is the punish the cat without them knowing its you. Thats why its called the Punishment from God. I did this to my cats and they would stop immediately. Then I would pick them up and dab away any water before I then take them over to their scratching posts, extend their claws and have them scratch their new post. It only took me 3 or 4 tries before they both stopped going after my furniture and started using their own posts. Every time I bought a new scratch post I would do the same thing. Where I would take them over to their new post, extend their claws and do the scratching motion with their paws while giving positive reinforcement. It worked perfectly.. Now if they do something they aren’t supposed to, you say NO and they will relate that to the water bottle and stop what they are doing for fear of a squirt. My cats would look around the room and not at me wondering where the squirt was gunna come from. This was for my two Lilac point Balinese. When I got my new Ragdoll kitten she was already so well socialized at 15 weeks that she never ONCE went after any of my couches or furniture. She knew which items for were her even though she was new to my house. Maybe because she already smelled my other cats on them. But I hope this helps some folks.

    @@TheCatButler Thanks! Yeah the object is to not have your cat associate punishment with you as a kitten. For it could cause a strife within the relationship that can last for years. When my cats got older it seemed they became smarter and more apt to listen to me. They were always very smart (My Balinese). But I also wanted them to be snuggle cats and you can only really get like that if they trust you implicitly. Before I lost my female I would love at the end of the day when I would settle down to watch TV before bed they would both jump up on the bed and literally snuggle with me. Especially my male cat. He was a huge snuggle bug. But it took a few years to get there though. Now I got this little 20 week old Ragdoll and I am flabbergasted as how intelligent and snuggly she is at a kitten. But that is the breed i suppose.. So friggin floppy and snuggly.. I love it!! I mean I LOVE Balinese. But dang, a cat that plays like a dog and loves to snuggle. Man thats a hard choice lol
