How to stop the whistling noise on your helmet

Фильм және анимация

This is the cheap and useful solution to getting rid of that annoying whistle while riding a motorcycle with your full-face helmet in the OPEN visor position. I'm just a novelist and I don't need you to click and subscribe. I looked all over the internet and found nothing so I solved it and here's my answer. Happy riding.

Hi Derek. As I mentioned, I would install the velcro to run the test. And I did it. Incredible. I was able to ride at 100km/h with the screen open. Fantastic. If you allow me, I would like to create a KZread video in Portuguese talking about it and presenting your video with the solution. This will help a lot of folks here in Brazil. Well done.

Going to try your trick because my 650 USD Arai Tour x5 has a terrible whistling noise from 35 mph with the visor open... The higher the peak, the louder the whistling gets. Arai's official answer to the problem was "close your visor then".

I knew I was not the only person in the planet with this problem, but same as you I couldn't find anything about it and it is not letting me enjoy my CBR 600 F4 and the thing is that I really like my helmet but I hate it at the same time. I though the whistle came from the air passing between the visor and the helmet not over the visor, but I gonna try this right now. Thank you again

Let us know. I'm certain this isn't the only cause or the only solution. But it definitely ONE of the causes, this solution works for it. The basic idea, though is: break up the smooth flow of the wind over the spot that's annoying you. The joy of velcro is there's no harm done by trying some in suspect-spots and it's cheap and easy to get. Happy riding.

@@ramonovietsj no, they were useless, however, I accidentally found out that one of their top level racing helmets has a very similar visor mechanism, which didn't always drop down. I bought one on the off chance it may work on my helmet and allow it to be open just a bit. It did and it does. Through the winter, with less air getting under the helmet the whistle is less anyway, but I can now choose to have the helmet cracked open if i choose to. Can't remember the name of the other helmet, Spirit or similar... their £700+ one, visor mech looks a bit like carbon, but isn't. Shoei were useless, just said it wasn't a manufacturing fault. No, it wasn't, it was a design fault. Next time I'm getting an Arai.

We do this on aircraft leading edge on some aircraft . Not for the same reasons . but to reduce unwanted flow of air over the wing . This is to direct air flow over the wing at a lower air speed and in high alfa angles of the wing . As it looks what your using the Velcro for is really doing the same thing but in a effective way but a bit cruder way . Is it worth it well vary much so . A great Idea . Matter of fact this can be used for many aspects of the helmet it self in stoping the anoying whissling noises and wind buffing . A good way to find out is to tape paper strips on to the helmet and to use a fan to find all the turbulances around the helmet Using this to make the air going around the helmet and over the strips of paper to flatten out onto the helmet . If there is any turbulance the paper will be pulled away from the helmet . If there is no tubulances and a true flow of air the paper will cleing to the helmet . There is not prevention of this from the back side of the helmet and that cant be help but in front , side and around vents it can .

I just went out to test another workaround. Solved it but really really ugly solution. I put something between the helmet and lens. And like you, I am for ages trying to find a solution in internt. @@dbmiller6 Unbelievable. How something so simple solves an annoying problem. When I bought the helmet I activated the warranty complaining about this. Sent the helmet to them and the answer back was "Helmet is within the specification and no problems found". I replied that sometimes the visor has to be open, running slow in hot weather for example and again they returner saying "The helmet is designed to operate with the visor down". So, finally the offered me to exchange by another model. Just saying all this to reinforce who bizarre it is and acknowledge how simple is the solution implemented by Schuberth and most of all you insight in this workaround. Now, as you say, It is in perfect NEW operation mode even up to 100km/h. Great content from you, Thank you.

Your idea inspired me to experiment with other materials to reduce wind noise emitted from top edge of visor when in full up position. So far I've succeeded with a round firm piece of shoelace held in place at the top of the visor ( not on the edge though) with hockey tape. The hockey tape is fabric like and nicely flexible and peals off without leaving residue. Next trial is with a nice bead of clear drying caulk in the same place where the string and tape were. With the caulking I can cut out segments of it at different points to fine tune the disruption of air flow over the visor.

Funny how I came to this video - I purchased a Schuberth S3 and, despite mild whistling during the test, after paying for it the whistling just went through the roof. In my case, it's when the helmet is cracked open to the smallest gap - ie, driving in traffic and not wanting to steam up. It's driving me crazy and I just can't have it. One of the reasons for getting a premium helmet is having the ability to control how many many degrees the visor opens; if having at the lowest setting turns it into a musical instrument, then it's not a premium product.

If it's the "flute problem," the diagnostic question is: What is (or could be) causing it? Maybe a vent? Maybe the hinge? Try adding some velcro or something else that will break up wind in suspect locations. Riding with something CHANGED as an experiment is my recommendation. Worse comes to worse … you went on a motorcycle ride.
