How to STOP scratching or jumping on furniture or counter tops

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Expert advice: In this tutorial you'll learn how to stop your cat from scratching/jumping on furniture/counter tops. BUT more importantly, you'll learn that you FIRST need to teach/show your cat WHERE and WHAT they're supposed to do. NOTE: Make sure you feed your cat the appropriate diet and the appropriate amount, especially if you have a kitten. A hungry cat will be hard to keep off counters where there is or there was once food.

    Just on scratching poles. Rope is really expensive and cats tend to break it fairly easily. I've found that you can use hessian tape which comes in about 2" wide rolls for upholstery. It's just as effective and much more durable and cheaper than rope. It can be overlapped to double up on the thickness, which is sufficient for them to climb, or even doubled again if you wish to ensure that the claws never hit the support.

    Hi great tutorial, I’m up in Brisbane actually ...I have a quick question in regards to retraining one of our cats to use the litter box to poop.. (she’s fine with wee) she was accidentally frightened one day when she was going, and ever since then she goes next to the litter box. How do we change this as it’s very hard to be around at just the right time of the “behavior” so to speak 😉

    Yeah I've noticed that claps and the Psst sound have been working the best to deter my cat (I still feel bad sometimes, but I feel like it's needed to avoid further problems) She is such a loving cat, very small work needed really. I've also noticed that vinegar keeps her away from places (she even stares me with this angry stare when I did that, it's crazy) but the problem is the next day the vinegar evaporated and there she was again, so I'm trying to look for more permanent solutions.

    This is really funny but I have been noticing, above all, that the cat is showing us spots in the house where we could have been doing a better job, or organizing in a more efficient way. In this way we do not get mad at her and we welcome this opportunity to work on ourselves too. They show us our weak spots the funny little critters =D

    never knew an automatic spray existed. Might have to look into something like that. My husband has let the cats jump up on the counters and stuff so much whenever he's home they just look at me like what are you going to do when I used to just have to look at them and they would get down. My authority has been undermined by him so much it holds no power. they now jump on the counter to try and get to our food.

    I just adopted this female cat, I have been noticing that we can let the doors open for her to go out freely all day and also at around 8 PM and around 6 AM (the hour when they are at peak energy) The only problematic time to let them go out seems to be around 2 AM, 4 AM, avoid letting the cat out around that time as much as possible. These specific time periods are when they do these "long walks" of theirs, and this is where they can get lost and never come back again :( Read lots of sad stories out there, my heart aches just by the thought of she running away and never returning. Prevention is key. I always thought cats had an enhanced sense of where is "home" and how to trace back their path, but apparently they don't. So it's up for us to take care of them and avoid that from happening.

  • @avonavians2860

    @avonavians2860

    It's not usually cruel. Actually, indoor cats often live longer than outdoor ones. Cats that are kept indoors can live as long as 17 years, while even cats that spend only part of their lives outdoors rarely live that long. And obviously, indoor cats are safer from fleas, disease, and predators. If your cat doesn't like playing, then what does he like? Does he like cuddling? Then cuddle him! Does he like being trained? Then train him! Does he like climbing? Then find him somewhere to climb! Find out what he likes, and he will be happy.

  • @FeelingShred

    @FeelingShred

    @@avonavians2860 Yes, agree 100%. It's just that this female cat we adopted was from the streets, we suspect she didn't have a house, therefore she has certain "patterns of behavior" programmed inside her head that we're trying to change. We are trying to gradually teach her how to become an indoor cat without pushing too hard or making her depressed. There are days that she begs to get out the door at 4AM, I don't want to see her sad like that. At that specific time in the night, we allow her to go have her walks, she is usually back to the house at around 8 AM. We are trying to figure out the "science" to all this. =D And it has been very fun

  • @avonavians2860

    @@avonavians2860 Some neighbor (a woman) stole the cat. Wife says she even suspects who it is. We don't really have a "healthy" neighborhood around here, there are no front yards, no space between houses, too high density. Not a safe place to let cats out. But the female cat would beg me to go out, so I let her out, usually around 3 AM, to make sure she would come back around 7 AM. Then, one week before disappearing, it was really weird, she stopped using the liter box entirely, she spent the entire day here but didn't even pee. Then, at night she would go out, I thought "better let her make her things outside then". She went out one night and didn't ever get back. I'm still trying to understand why she stopped using the liter box in our house, she had always used it since day 1. Well, she's gone now. We learnt the lesson: in the "slum" we live we can't let cats go out, unfortunately. And it's really sad that in some worse parts of the world there are still people that "put an end" to cats, while dogs are let free to roam everywhere, pooping everywhere. It's really F ing sad.

  • @earthimmigrant

    @earthimmigrant

    Nordlicht 24 it’s just a trim of the tips so they aren’t super sharp and don’t get stuck in stuff. If done correctly it can be beneficial to both human and cat, especially indoor cats, helping them shed the claw sheaths at a more natural rate and preventing scratch injuries (often accidental) to humans and other animals. We have had the last 5 cats front paw declawed. My wife is on blood thinners and as wonderful as cats are they can sometimes go into what I call their "crack" time. When they do this they are not concerned about rules. That is when I am concerned my wife may get clawed. As a side note, our cats have all lived at least 15 years and some 19 years. They have no problem with having no claws in the front. They can still catch animals if we were to let them. When I had cats as a kid, they were never declawed and I could remember having scratch mark on my arms almost all the time but they were outside cats with no boundaries.

    @@emilyeah Hi Emily. Where I live it is mainly rural living. This means that there are more farmers than others. Many raise/store crops that are very attractive to mice and other vermin. The farmers employ the use of cats to control these pests and they do a GREAT job. There are a couple downsides to this. They let the cats have free range of the farm, including the barn. So the first drawback is that they not only kill pests but they also kill birds, rabbits, chipmunks, etc. and they are VERY good at it. Because these cats breed prodigiously, they soon become a problem. The second drawback is that they have many illnesses and many die young because they do not get the care we give our cats. One of our cats when it was a kitten, was brought by the mother cat out in the field to die. She was rescued because we agreed to adopt her and one of her sisters. When we brought them to the vet to get them spayed, they found she had lacerations on her bladder and it was out of place. The vet corrected the problem, for a considerable fee. We now have two VERY healthy and loving cats, Myrtle and Gertrude or Mert and Gert. I am happy when people are able to raise any animal without any medical intervention but is declawing (front only) worse than letting them be drowned or killed at the Pound? God Bless you and have a GREAT day. I'm going to play with my cats!
