How To Stop Quickly In A Manual Transmission Car - Braking

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Thanks everyone for watching my manual transmission tutorial from last year. The majority of the comments on that video were regarding coming to a quick stop so I figured I'd make this quick video touching that subject. Hope this helps!

    Great. I will say this it does take a bit of practice. It's not hard to learn how to drive one. After a few days you will find a different world to driving. They also have the downside in start and stop traffic. But the overall fun is worth it. For me I go to the gear I want for the type of driving i'm doing soft or hard. Personally all drivers ed should be with a manual. If you can't drive one, good luck finding an automatic in Europe !

    Brother i was kinda hesitant on buying a manual at first but i really wanted the truck so i got it and my dad tought me how to drive it. With a manual it feels like you have more control over your vehicle and once you get good at it. It can actually be alot of fun to drive.

    I usually slow down with the brake (like at a red light for example) when the revs start getting a little low and I get closer to the red light then I'll pop it into Neutral and coast the remaining 3 or 2 car lengths and stop. But sometimes the light turns green before you even stopped so in that case I pop into 2nd gear (cause the car at this point is going about 10-20mph) and I'm on my way like usual

    this pretty much answered the question ive been having. It's okay to hit the brakes while moving without pressing the clutch and "my car" wont stall as long as it doesnt come to a complete stop (or fall below a certain rpm)? But once im down slowing down and want to continue going forward, how do i know if i downshift or just keep going in the same gear i was in? If i do downshift should i rev match?

  • @Itstrevorspov

    @Itstrevorspov

    6 жыл бұрын

    Dave Restrepo typically if you’re in a higher gear 4-6 you’d want to downshift to 2nd or 3rd and then you can either pop into neutral and coast to a stop using just brakes, or just use the brakes while still in gear and clutch in once RPM’s get low (1000-1500) to keep from stalling and then neutral coast to a stop since you’ll only be around 10-20mph. If you’re downshifting especially at higher speeds and slowing... you’ll wanna rev match to keep from putting to much strain on your engine.. rev matching is for a smoother downshift.. at the same time it can wear your clutch if you do it 24/7

  • @KommissarBanx

    @KommissarBanx

    5 жыл бұрын

    Dave Restrepo If you’re in 3rd going like 40 or 4th going like 50, you can very gently use the brake or more favorably, switch into second and then use the break. When the car gets to about 10-20mph you can just hold the clutch in (since it disengages the engine and physics will cause the car to stop since it’s pretty heavy) and brake at your leisure. If you stay around 20 just slowing down for someone taking a slow turn or something on a back road, you can just accelerate back into a higher gear

    Dear Brandon, when you are braking in a manual car and you put down the clutch, or put it in neutral, at the same time, your stopping distance will be considerably longer than the stopping distance would be when you just brake without the clutch. So you want to put down the clutch as late as possible in order to have the maximum brake while not stalling the engine. The difference in stopping distance can be several metres/yards, depending on your speed, which can mean a crash or not. Thanks for keeping this in mind. Have a good day.

    Engine compression or Jacob braking is ESSENTIAL to safe braking especially in emergencies and most car manuals, my WRXs included, warn of the major increase of accident risk of coast braking in neutral. Heel toe is NOT optional in the real world, a fact I have faced every day coming back to standard from automatic and backed up by how many automatic drivers are on the road and how they tend to drive (short following distance and sudden braking with rapid accelerations). The advice many such as myself are seeking, I believe at least, are pointers for rapid heel toe gear dropping i.e. how to quickly and smoothly walk the transmissioin down the ratios from top gear to second gear in common situations like traffic suddenly jamming on the freeway or a car pulling out of a driveway on an avenue without looking. To be more specific, how should we adjust our blips, important things to repember on the stick like preventing missed shifts or slipping into the wrong port, and how much break pressure per gear i.e.constant or gradual increase, etc

    Must disagree, because, if brakes are able to lock the wheels, then extra engine braking force doesn't make a difference in maximum braking force. There are only 3 factors which change your braking distance - weight, traction, braking force.

  • @Synthwave89

    @Synthwave89

    6 жыл бұрын

    +Invisible12345ful Exactly this. Engine braking is not necessary for emergency braking. The disc brakes alone can EASILY lock the wheels, what's more important is keeping traction by means of ABS and high quality tires. That said, there is value in having the car in a correct gear at all times in case you need to further avoid danger by accelerating immediately.

    By the way, the main reason I do not engine brake is because when your engine has 0 fuel injection while spinning, it gets oiled only by oil, and actually gasoline itself serves as oiling too. I drive a diesel, and diesel is even more oily, so I prefer throwing it in neutral end let my engine stay on low RPM's with fuel being injected making minimum wear on piston rings. Difference in economy is too small to sacrifice the difference in wear on piston rings.

Questions like “what gear am i supposed to be in?” “How do i brake” “How do i know whether im in 1st or 3rd or 2nd or 4th?” Once you actually start driving you realize how easy it actually is it just takes about a week to get the hang of it but once you got it everything makes sense

    This video is mostly correct, however if you are braking in emergency (ie. full brake) you can normally apply the clutch around half a second after you hit the brakes, rather than at exactly the same time. This takes practice but in the vast majority of scenarios the car will be just above stalling by the time the clutch goes in. This gets you the benefit of a short spurt of engine braking but prevents stalling. Source: UK driver (where pretty much everyone learns/drives manual) - emergency braking in this manner is a possible part of the test.

    I think a lot of people know "the brakes are still the brakes" but they are probably concerned about how hard the car will jerk when stalled suddenly at those speeds and how much damage it will do. Is it safe to say that you can just hit the brake immediately and try to hit the clutch asap before revs drop below 1000?

    I hate being limited to automatics, and what if I'm forced to drive someone's manual in a hurry? Ive had several small lessons by my sister, and even drove her car about a mile, solo, once, but stalled on the way home and did a mini-burnout in our parents' driveway. I'm scared to wreck my dad's truck's transmission and said sister has gotten an automatic. But braking has always been confusing to me, so thank you. This helps so so much and I'm excited to broaden my future car-buying horizons :D

    Huh, saw in my recommended and I clicked, because that's all I've ever owned was manual cars. I've been doing it for so long I just do it without thinking about it and thru trial and errors at first, you end up learning your car, which gears are what and how the engine sounds and you just go...like 2nd nature the cars an extension of you. My advice to anyone starting out. Start slow, learn each gear, each gears max speed, and feel it as you engage in each gear up until 5, or 6 I have a six speed now used to have a 5. You'll eventually know what to do in certain circumstances on the road and when to down shift, rev match etc... I'm not very good at explaining, but the man in the video did a very good job explaining it that I'm sure it could help beginners out. Used to have to look at what gear I was going in to as well, but now I can go into any gear and downshift, rev match whatever you wanna call it.. flawlessly. The more you drive one (manual) the more everything will flow naturally

    "Brake will always be brake" is true only if the hydraulic system is still working - meaning the engine is running. Once the engine stalled, brake effort will increase, not desirable for quick stop. The correct way for panic stop is press clutch and brake (hard) at the same time.

I wanted to relearn all these but I found my driving school didn't teach any special cases either. All they told was to clutch+brake "without mercy" if you really need to stop. They kind of knew most of us students will drive an auto trans anyways. No "fast downshifting" was taught.

    As someone who rode a motorbike for a good chunk of my college days, I have gotten into the habit of sequentially downshifting all the way to first, even in a car. More engine braking, but also more work. When I saw videos of people driving cars by letting it sit in neutral while braking, I was like... but but but... why are you overworking your brakes!

    That was not what he said in the video, he said it was ok to brake in 6th gear because a break is still a break, it’ll slow you down. You will stall the car by doing this but it would be better than hitting anything. His second tip was to keep the car in gear, brake, and having the clutch in at the same time so that you don’t stall. In his example, he was in 4th and once he came to a complete stop and before hitting 1000 rpms, he put it in neutral and and then back into 1st

    what about downshifting gear and applying break while releasing clutch .. i found this very effective but don't know if there are any losses ..

    if you're not rev matching you could lock the driven wheels up which will horrifically upset the balance of the car and all while absolutely raping the clutch

    Not really in circuit with heel and toe is even pleasent for engine and safe. I n normal driving when you drive a bit fast the downshifting is better than... crashing the car? or damage the clutch (if you are extremely unconscious) put 3 to 2 gear at 40 mph, making all day that... is crazy. Not all people have cars with ABS and AMG brakes with 5 rotors and massive tyres...

  • @BarbecuedPossum

    FEGTTTSDH If you release the clutch fairly slowly then yes that can slow you down quicker if your car has milk bottle tops for brakes, but if you do it too quick then it will lock the driven wheels for a bit and completely disrupt the car so if you're trying to steer around something that can screw you. If your car doesn't have enough brake force to be able to overwhelm the tyre grip then it's probably not roadworthy to begin with. Even the most economy based shit boxes I've driven can still do that which renders using clutch drag to slow it down useless

    "lock the wheels" I never said put first gear at 100 km/h... The engine brake is a complement... and go to see compare brake distance between manual vs automatic cars... exactly the same car with same tyres, conditions, etc... the automatic car stop is less distance... because... the a/t trans makes downshifting...

    any sharp change in engine speed vs wheelspeed could lock them, hence why i said if you release the clutch slowly. Look at what dedication blog did in his gt86

    Something VERY important when breaking in a manual diesel vehicle, especially larger displacemnt truck engines, is that it can be dangerous to allow the engine to stall when breaking as a diesel engine can often overpower your breaks and foceibly continue to run even below 300 rpm. This is especially true with mechanical injection diesel engines and even computer controlled injection if the injector pump is ran off the engine like in a 24V cummins with a VP44 pump. This phenomenon is especially true in low gears or anything lower than a 2:1 ratio however you can feel the lack of deceleration when rpms get close to idle speed even when in overdrive. I know this from a lot of experience. Also, when breaking very fast in an absolute all out emergency is needed I'll ignore the "heel toe" downshift method and just shift down to rev the engine out as much as possible without redlining and just ease off the clutch slipping it if necessary. Not quite as good that way for the clutch but doing it like that allows me to fully focus on the road and keep the breaks well planted to the floor and pumping them if necessary to maintain control. A clutch is a lot cheaper than most wreck bills and especially loss of life. Just my .02.

    @@wretchedslippage3255 Wretched Slippage- tonight's your lucky night cuz am trying to sleep but cant. Dude, just got a 2009 Suzuki Swift stick and while i've driven b4, its been almost a decade so of course am rusty. My biggest fear was suddenly breaking and car jerking or cut off while someone's behind me at hi speeds. This guy video is on point and when he said *THE BRAKES ARE THE BRAKES* he's right. Lets say i'm in 3rd gear and comin up on a stop sign, just break normally and as RPM goes to 1, clutch in and either go in nuetral or shift into 1st. As for going over a bump, dont brake too hard. If u in 2nd gear, just clutch into 1st and go slowly over the bump while giving it light gas. This will prevent u from clutching in and starting from scratch or jerking. Slippage just got this car on March 19th and so in just a few weeks i know where my gears are- i dont have to look down to shift. 1. After u start the car, clutch to 1st. 2. Gently ease foot off the clutch until u feel the vehicle moving forward. At the point, lightly press the gas. And you're off!! 3. With reversing, u have to bite the clutch a bit- u cant just release the clutch or she'll cut off. So my foot is still on the clutch as i reverse and then i ease my foot off clutch and give it light gas. 4. If u goin at high speed btwn 4th or 5th gear, and u comin up on a light or curve or stop sign, u can down-shift into 3rd or 2nd as it slows down the vehicle as u downshift. It comes with practice! Sorry for the long reply. It was also for other 1st timers who may be afraid and clueless! Cheers!

    The way I've been braking in my manual is as I'm braking, I watch the speed I'm going and downshift to the gear I should be in at that speed. Example: If I'm in sixth going 90, and I start braking, once I reach 60 I go to fifth, fourth once I reach 45, third once I reach 30, and so on. Is this okay? Or is it okay if I throw it in neutral when if I need to speed up, throw it in the gear I need?

    Topflamingwolf i would think it is if your rev matching and it feels good, and the prms arent near redline. if your getting jerks i would just ride the gear down to 1500ish and gear down. if ur coming to a red light, just use the brakes and neutral after u ride the gear down to 1500. brake pads are cheaper than transmission work. BUT on the highway when i do a top speed run i will gear down at almost redline like a race car lol i need all the brakes going over 100, plus i dont like using the brakes at that speed unless i need to.

    No worries, everybody stall car when learning. No big deal. Just learn to avoid stalling, release your foot slowly off the clutch apply a bit of gas. I'll recommend you learn hill start and hill reverse climb too. (Listen to the engine when lifting foot off the clutch.)

  • @vileguy

    Mentions racing downshifting but doesn't mention normal downshifting. Put it down 1 gear from where you're at while you brake, and then drop it again as you slow down more, repeat until in first gear. Downshifting will help you decelerate and take some of the load off your brakes. As you come to a complete stop, fully press the clutch to avoid stalling. This is something you should learn in your first month of driving stick, get familiar with your car and how you can control it.

    so you do engage clutch, hit the brake, slip into neutral, then go to 1st and go again or if necessary: clutch to neutral, start braking, and....once stopped go to first and go I just remembered that if you're in neutral you can't stall the engine (I'm new to manual but I've some experience in a Forced Feedback Simulator which helps get a feel for what manual driving is like but my weakest point was always braking)

    2 different school of thought during emergency braking which is better? A. CLUTCH IN first and then BRAKE. B. BRAKE first then CLUTCH in. debate is going on about these 2 concept. BUT I saw one video in youtube that enlightens me, he is a instructor in UK. He said LETTER B is more appropriate and more efficient, why?. Because if you press the break first then followed by clutch in IT ACTUALLY LESSENS THE distance needed for your car to come to a complete stop. Unlike Letter A. clutch in first and then break. So I was like, okay I hope he can show me some demonstration and so he did. Now I was convinced Letter B is more safe. (NOTE that when you say press the brake first and then clutch in it doesn't mean that you will actually do it like this "break for few seconds then clutch in" WRONG. in Letter B you will do it as if you are pressing the break and clutch at almost the same time possible (if you want to have a complete stop without actually stalling the engine). It's just that you press that break first so your Break system bites early.
