I'll be 80 this year. After dealing with my mother's home when she passed I swore I wouldn't inflict the same on my children. Mom was a typical American consumer who acquired way more stuff than was necessary. (How many pairs of shoes with matching handbags does one woman need!?!) Not only have I done my kids a favor, but I've also made my own life easier by eliminating anything that wasn't useful or meaningful.

I don’t have problem with tea towels because. I hang them on hooks by the loop/label that’s usually on them. If not, I snap a cafe curtain ring on them and hang them on the hooks with the others. They live on my door to garage, which isn’t too far to manage. Now, I DO have a messy linen closet problem. I am a butterfly 🦋 so I took the door off it long ago and have a curtain tied back instead. I am now trying to half neatly stuff the bottom sheet in a pillow case so it is all together…and so they don’t fall off the shelves. I don’t even use top sheets so those are folded on top shelf and available to use as curtains, tablecloths, etc. Thanks for the “don’t fold them anymore” hint. 👍👍

Add that to ADHD freeze, and there's a LOT that has gone undone far too long. I cannot put my towels or silverware away and let the cupboard or drawer not look perfect. Yes, I am an “all or nothing” person. Perfectionist. I have been working on myself for years. When I go to clean a room, I want to it too top to bottom. I have made myself just do the perimeter and surfaces around stuff. Once I got all the rooms decluttered and in order, I have no problem keeping it that way now. But it used to be messy everywhere. I used to start over writing a post it note at work if I made a mistake. Now I just scratch through the mistake and keep writing. That was very hard to do but now it is easy. Decluttering my house was key so I thank you CAS because you are the one who started me on that journey. ❤

When I do start on something, I rarely finish it. I'm trying to do better in 2024, and I'll try to apply some of these tips to my own life. Thank you, Cas, for this post. I needed to hear that. I spent all of 2022 recovering from near death. Most of 2023 overcompensating for 2022 until I got sick again. I am on the OCD side of perfectionism. My mother believed being in 2nd place was no more than the first loser. I have been striving for perfection ever since. Yet, everything I've ever learned has come to me from a mistake I've made. As 2024 rolled in I gave up. Tomorrow, in 15-minute intervals, I am taking the garbage bag around the house and tossing stuff. I've had a memory bin for years that will be coming with me. Please keep this kind of content coming--you are a great cheerleader!

😂 My dog peed on the livingroom floor yesterday and I not only dried that up but I vacuumed the entire room, moved couches and took all trimning as well. Then I cleaned the floor before putting the couches etc. back. 😂 Even I felt it was a little over the top but how nice it is to have a clean livingroom! 🫣😬

I’ll have to take your advice and try to be crappier!! 😊 maybe just getting 10 minutes of stuff I don’t need out of my house a day will eventually add up to making a difference. Maybe I’ll try one box/bag a day. Here’s hoping. This was a great video!

My boss gave me an interesting gift a couple weeks ago. I had a task I had to revamp in very little time. He paused me and my perfectionism and asked, “How would a lazy person do this? Like what’s the easiest way to just get it done?” And… I used it for another task this week and it’s surprisingly freeing to think about it that way. I relayed it to mom and she said, “KISS.” We know. We all know. And yet the perfectionism holds us back.

I'm 54 and just found out I have ADHD. What a revelation. Everything I did in the past makes sense now. The pile of clothes on the bench at the end of the bed makes sense now. There are periods of it being clear but I can't seem to put it all away every day. My craft room is perfectly organized with nothing out of place. Everything is meticulously organized in there, yet I can't seem to keep coffee table clear of junk. How many times has someone said they're be there in 15 minutes and suddenly all surfaces are clear and clean? Don't look at the bag in the closet that I threw the junk into. Lol. I can't be the only one.

We got to where when he would notice a tiny imperfect before he would try to make it perfect we would say "no no we like it that way! It adds character!"

I believe that if I ask for a certain level of clean and tidy of my family, that it's a matter of respecting me and my husband's home. After all my kids live in our house. They need to take care of their rooms as well as common areas to our standards. Once they move to their own homes, they get to make their own standards. But mark my words, there will not be half eaten, moldy sandwiches under my kids beds, in my home! Seriously, how do you teach self discipline if you don't set standards and boundaries? Now, my husband is expected to keep common areas tidy to my standards, as it's a matter of respecting me, as I am a work from home mom, (and because I never put his things where he can find them, when I tidy for him...🤫). He's responsible for cleaning his man cave, but the messy level is up to him, as long as he keeps the door closed (and there's no foul odors wafting from under the door). 💖🌞🌵😷

My father would say, "Your house is a reflection of who you are. If it's messy, then you are lazy and dirty." Breaking out of that mindset has been so hard. His high expectations of how we cleaned were so damaging, and I'm struggling with it today. Thanks to your channel and other ones, I've started my own journey and not been as hard on myself.

I would love to see organization content for people with lots of pets! I have cats and reptiles and end up keeping a lot of supplies on hand--things like food, supplements, bulbs, litter. I see so many pet people with beautiful aquariums and neat little areas for their fur babies but there's a junk drawer full of all kinds of pet supplies--some useful, some not. I think having organization methods for this would help a lot of people :)

I live in a small 2 br apartment. I consider myself a minimalist and declutter semi regularly. I recently went on a decluttering kick… I came out with FOUR garbage bags of trash and donations. I still have about half the apartment to go! 🤯 So the tip is, even if you think you don’t need to declutter, pull stuff out and pretend you’re moving. You’d be surprised how much stuff you’re keeping in corners, drawers, and closets.

Yeah I’m 45 and just recently it dawned on me why something that takes other people 30 minutes, takes me at least triple the time on most tasks. Super detail oriented and perfectionistic. How ironic my house is a mess most of the time 😅 I tried setting timers and forcing myself to literally “keep moving”. Not kneel down zeroing in on that patch or spot and the next and the one next to that.. And OH I missed a spot, let me go back, oh it doesn’t come off.. Now what? Type-X? Egrmm IT HAS TO COME OFF.. (… 12 hours later…) the house is still a mess but that one corner is absolutely blinding! 🌟😎🌟

I was literally like that women's kitchen you did, who's house looked great. My house is 4000 sq ft and EVERY closet, drawer, cupboard, under beds .. was jam packed with garbage, junk, nothing had a home...... We have a s cond garage that was floor to ceiling and you had to climb mountains to get to anything! I have spent 4 years, got rid of about 50-60 percent of all of our belongings. I have a confession to make though: My ADHD brain just can't get my house beautifully organized, so I have hired an organizer to work with me for 30 hours,! Don't judge me!
