When I say I don’t suffer from alcohol cravings, I truly mean it.
I’ve learned how to stop alcohol cravings in a very fast and simple way. Through practice, introspection, and taking a First Principles approach to stop drinking, I have figured out how to catch alcohol cravings before they go anywhere.
And, throughout this article, I’ll be showing you how to do the exact same thing.
Bear in mind, alcohol cravings weren’t always this way. I used to live my life at the mercy of a craving.
Every time I stopped drinking using willpower, it would always be the cravings that ended up beating me.
It would always be that little voice inside my head.
“Go on, just have one”…
Or
“You can control it now - go back to moderating.”
And then, before you know it, I’m back at square 1.
If you’re suffering from alcohol cravings, this article is going to shine some light on your situation.
It’s not going to be your typical “just distract yourself” type of advice. That stuff doesn’t work.
Instead, this article will teach you exactly how to deal with an alcohol craving. You’re definitely going to want to read this entire post.
Does this scenario sound familiar to you?
You’ve had a heavy night. You drank way more than you intended to that night.
You wake up in the middle of the night, thirsty for water, and feeling half-cut.
Your partner is asleep and doesn’t seem to notice you are awake.
You go to the bathroom, use the toilet, and frantically drink water from the tap.
You look in the mirror with bloodshot eyes, and say to yourself,
“I’ll never do that again”
You really, really mean it. You’re going to commit to a few weeks away from drinking alcohol.
Last night was just way too much.
You go back to sleep and wake up the following morning.
You wake up with a shocking hangover and drag yourself through the day.
And before you know it, it’s dinner time. The hangover has mostly worn off, but you still feel pretty bad.
All of a sudden, those reasons you had for not drinking seem to diminish.
You’re grouchy, and you end up pouring yourself a drink.
“Just one drink,” you say to yourself.
Before you know it, you are polishing off more than “just one” and the cycle starts again…

    That little voice is a parasite. Would a healthy organism crave a toxin? That craving and the mental emotional manipulation is parasitic infection. Research parasites - they have WAY more control than people generally realise. Its the same for carbs and sugar cravings. Refined sugar is highly toxic. Healthy and parasite free organisms dont crave toxins. Bacteria moulds and fungus eg candida also affect you. Candida causes anxiety, for example.

    Are you a doctor as I've glanced at a few of your video's where you say rehab isn't needed and do you know how dangerous it can be to stop cold turkey or even "weaning" off (HEAVY ALCOHOL USE) without medication?? Seriously mate it can kill you.. Not good advice.. You can suffer strokes, seizures, heart attacks, pass out.. REALLY REALLY BAD ADVICE! Thumbs down on this and all video's and I'll make sure I click the "not interested" button for this channel on my KZread account.. Stupid advice / dangerous..

    I think the biggest thing is to stop feeling like you are missing out. You aren't missing out on anything but loss of money, a hangover, and disappointment in yourself.

    When you drink alcohol, you only feel good during that 4-5 hour session that you're drinking......but feel crap every other time. When you don't drink, you feel good 24/7. And think of the money 💰 you save by giving it up. The incentives are many.

    Hmm, I'm guessing it depends on the reasons why you drink. For me personally, I'd usually feel extremely good when drinking (initially atleast), because it turns me into the person that I would love to actually be in a sober state (being able to share feelings/talk, quite confident, not constantly overthinking about the past or present, actually feeling things and being excited/interested/passionate, more social etc.) When sober, I just feel like everything is meaningless, I feel depressed/anxious, don't feel like talking to ppl/isolate myself, lose interest in my hobbies amongst other things. I've been sober for nearly 3 months now, and I'm slowly starting to forget the point of not drinking and I feel like giving up. I guess my biggest fear is that I will be unhappy 'forever', even though I know that is a very irrational thought. Like, how long do I have to wait for my brain to actually work properly again (I'm guessing my dopamine receptors are messed up from alcohol abuse)? I know that it can take many months or even over a year, but that seems so long right now. I already feel like I haven't drank in an eternity, even though it has only been 3 months. I'm currently not giving up yet though, but the thoughts constantly telling me to drink and that I'll feel better immediately aren't helping ... I have to rely purely on discipline atm, as there is no motivation whatsoever. Currently looking up various videos and articles to try and get me through this desperate craving and honestly, I feel kinda lost right now ... Was sooo close to giving in yesterday (after thinking about it all day long), but I didn't. I went for a long hike instead and by the time I got back home, the stores were pretty much closed. Today is almost the same story, wanting to drink and thinking about it all day long :( ... I wouldn't mind cravings if they only lasted for a short while, but having to deal with them non-stop for a few days is so exhausting.

    @@jag0wnsu In my case, it got easier as time went by. I don't think about alcohol now. Plus I think of all the benefits, which you should try to do:- more money, longer life, weight loss, better teeth, hair, skin, liver, ill far less, no hangovers.........you may feel bored for a while, but your body is loving not being bombarded with this drug anymore. In social situations, if one must rely on alcohol, they may need professional help in dealing with social shortcomings, I don't know. It's just something I learned to master like a new job. I got there eventually. Bear in mind, many who think alcohol improves their social capability actually do and say a lot of foolish things and look stupid to others, due to their lack of caution. Hang in there...... I'm sure things will start improving. Find others who are doing it as well. Sounds like you need a support network.

    i was more sensible when i was younger, i would go to a club and just stop drinking at midnight, by the time i left the club i was sober. now i go out and drink until i black out.

    Drank everyday for 10 years, felt crap every morning but by half 2 after work I was drinking again. Only stopped when it affected my health to the point I physically couldn't eat, had a numb mouth all day and couldn't swallow food for nearly 5 years, had to survive on shakes and soups. That was my reason for stopping and never felt better. Good work on vids.

    I’m sitting here watching your video after two small bottles of champagne and now a glass of white wine thinking about getting another!! I’m 78 and have been drinking for years and years!! My skin is dehydrated and especially my face. I try all these lotions and potions to hydrate but no go when you still drink! I’m really hoping your words can help me...thank you. Hugs 💜💜

    Well stopping didn’t work! I’m now 80 and have stopped....I found non alcoholic champagne, called FRE, and I love it! I do not miss wine at all. Feel better in the morning, proud of myself (even though it’s still like drinking without the bad stuff). Water just doesn’t do it for me...I need a taste and I love bubbles.💜

    I'm sitting here watching your video and on my 3rd beer but the fact that I'm watching you is a realisation that I'm now in the process of quitting drinking it's been 2 days now that I have started to understand and pursue my goal I'm in my 5th week with no cigarettes so I know my will power is strong wish me luck I need to start the process of making a serious effort thanks sober leon

It's the money focus that might help. Every time I want to buy - I pull the money out (cash back) and put it in a box. Seeing the dollar bills. Money spent. Should help me.

    I cannot explain why but the only time I seem to be successful is when I make myself accountable to someone of the opposite sex that I believe loves me. Unfortunately, when my drinking goes away theirs didn't. I couldn't get either of them to quit with me. One is dead and the other is ashamed of herself. Of course me going back on being lonely didn't help either.

    Point 2 is so true. You do really think that Alcohol adds value to your life but it really doesn't. I'm not an alcoholic however when I do have a drink it's normally around 4 or 5. So I've decided to completely quit, hopefully these videos can continue to motivate me.

    3 weeks sober (again) here now. I'd been drinking 38 yrs daily..A&E 6 times with severe withdrawals a detox and rehab. I did 66 days sober after detox and rehab then relapsed..probably 4 relapses now. I was like a week on booze then a week off it, i even adding 80% water to a large vodka kidding myself it was less harmful. Then the gap shortens of less than a week not using and more time with using till your right back in that misery pit all over again..thank you for listening and RESPECT for you Leon sir..great job!     Greetings Sober Leon!! I've been staying away from alcohol for 7 years, but I still get cravings!! It is this that gives me some pause (and some fear - I was pretty bad).     It is not always a craving of alcohol BUT a HABIT!! I think a habit is worse than a craving. They say it takes 21 days to get over a habit! If you live in a neighborhood, like I do 6 months out of the year, where there is happy hour every night you get into the HABIT of drinking with your friends. Some drink a lot some not so much. During Covid we didn’t frequent the happy hour very much but the habit was still there! Thanks for your videos and I am really listening to them so I can break my habit!

    I stopped drinking (this time) 5 months ago, on Jan 1st. Here is a scenario that I have not had to face recently: a wedding reception or party, or other social gathering where you feel nervous, awkward or bored and wish you weren't there, but you have to be, and everybody is drinking, and drinking has helped you get through this sort of thing in the past. What do you do? I can think of a few things now I have asked the question, but what would you do?

    Such a great video, thank you!! The craving is an important part of drinking to reflect on. When you think about it and just let it pass you will know that it is the craving dying out. It's the little monster dying. AND ITS SUCH A GOOD FEELING. Don't see it as pain and withdrawal. See it as the process of killing the Little Monster.

    Try to remember that thoughts, all thoughts, are like clouds in the sky. They come and go, but if you remember that you can choose which thoughts to hold onto, as he said, a different response to the thought “a turn around to the positive” will allow you to retrain your brain to think as you choose.. An example, have you ever been angry while thinking of something to be thankful for? It’s impossible to be thankful and angry at the same time.. This logic works in the same manner as well, if you change the thought at the beginning of the issue, you change the thought following the issue..

    I've drank heavy/alcoholic ever since I left school at 16!. Apart from a cocktail on sunny beach, I couldn't say I've ever enjoyed drinking. Just a mental health tool, that doesn't even work anyway. Been in this drink/anxiety cycle for too long now.

    Great advice. It is OK to think about alcohol - it's impossible not to with the social pressures and normalcies associated to it... But agreed - thinking about it and craving are two entirely different things. I'm a year sober and never been happier - and it's due to these same principles of seeing Alcohol for what it truly is. I read a lot of books and did a lot of research to change my view of it. Now that I've opened my eyes and had that "aha" moment, it's hard for me to understand how others don't also see it the way I do... they don't because of the enormous social machine behind the industry that tells them they HAVE to drink to have fun, they HAVE to drink when happy to celebrate, they HAVE to drink when sad, they HAVE to drink when bored, they HAVE to drink when around friends, they HAVE to drink when traveling, they HAVE to drink on weekends etc etc... it's all complete BS.

    short intro into my story , i wasnt addicted to alcohol YET, but was heading that way rapidly ,i've tried quiting before like overthinking and overplaning it , for instance tried starting in 2020 1st of january ,lasted a few patetic days then i was back on the train , then pandemic started , and i started drinking like if it was the olympics ! :))) , so one totally randomn night 18th october i was drinking alone... 2 AM ,and one random short really short tought striked me... ( man this is depresing and pathetic ) so.... i went with it , trew anything alcooholic out in the middle of the night ,took out the trash, even took out empty bottles wich were i quote ''colectables'' like beer from around the world and shit , took a really cold shower cuz i wanted to go to bed sober , and from then on 4 months passed ,not one drink....wasnt easy, but i took one day at a time, if i think of alcohol ,hell yeah, might even crave ,but dont go with it ,just waiting for time to do its magic and it really works

    Im watching these videos trying to stop drinking and I cant shake the knowledge that Im just gonna go get some eventually. Its like Im just postponing it and feeling proud for not getting any and then getting some to celebrate almost. Its like I literally dont have control

    I know exactly what you mean. I'm on day 2....and I think about "never again" and it terrifies me and I feel like 100 percent I'll fail. BUT....I think it's better to not think about that stuff. Just think about today and being sober for today. And if you do relapse and have a drink or get drunk, don't wallow in shame or be too hard on yourself....just accept that it was a mistake and get back on that horse of sobriety. This is at least what I'm telling myself.....it seems to help with those feelings you described because I have them too.

    1)Chage the paradigm, alcohol is not a reward for anyone, even people that doesn't have a drinking problem are being damaged by alcohol, they just don't realize it. 2)Change the person that you identify with, stop thinking of you as an addict because then relapsing will be justifiable cause that's what addicts do. Think of you as someone who doesn't drink, stop thinking about the goal (Not to drink) and just focus in being an alcohol free person each day. Small daily actions give big results over time.     I was clean for 7 years but recently have had health complications and I fell into depression and foolishly had 8 binge drinking sessions back to back. The withdrawals are horrible and terrifying, I literally prayed to God to not die because I drank a ton. Now I need to learn how to deal with the cravings all over again. Hopefully these tips will help.

    I would suggest reading the book Atomic Habits, which is going to help you understand why you do the things you do, and will provide the tools for you to overcome any bad habit not just drinking, cause drinking is not the issue it is just that you have gotten used to use it as a coping mechanism, but you can change it. Humans are easy to be programmed, every mayor company is conditioning us to do things all the time and we don't even notice. We can do the same for ourselves but in positive way. Blessings!

    Addictions are a spiritual problem - a lack of a relationship with God. I was addicted to alcohol and a heavy drinker for decades. One day, I got down on my knees and begged Jesus to heal me and remove my addiction because it was destroying my relationships and making me miserable. I took the first step that night and went to bed without a drink. The next day and ever since then I have not had the desire to drink and am much healthier and happier. But I have to work at it every day to keep sober and the only way is to have a close relationship with God. Develop a strong prayer life and close relationship with Jesus and you will notice a big change for the better in your life. I have just asked Jesus to heal you, to place the right people in your life to help you on this journey and to give you lasting joy, fulfillment and peace. God bless and God love you.

    As I see it you get craving and withdrawal.With a craving you have the chance to be rational. Once you go in to withdrawal,the addiction holds you hostage and you either meet the devil or you give in to a drink.

    Never had alcohol since December last year. I was given an Irish coffee in March but didn't know it had alcohol in it? I wasn't happy after I was told but I'll be sure to ask in future if I'm drinking something I'm not sure about?

    Hi Leon, Big respect for helping people. I think stopping is a choice you really need to want to do. I’m not ready yet but I have a deep down feeling that taking a few weeks off each time is helping and not going stupid when I do drink like making up for lost time. It might be what slowly makes me stop as I see health benefits and save money. A guy I used to work with just passed away through alcohol addiction and when I knew him he was a fit man who was a confident professional man. It’s scary stuff

    I stopped drinking for a week then a very good friend of mine died in an accident.I was very sad and i thought I should drink one,then two,three.. now i am feeling terrible but i will do my best to quit.

    I decided to finally let it of it 3 days ago after drinking half a bottle of a 1.75 L or more...every...single...day for 8 years. I'm feeling hopeful. And I have energy now. And I don't have to worry about how I'm gonna' find my next one without money anymore.

    I was never a heavy drinker, 2-3 drinks was my limit. But, I would drink 1-2 times a week due to the craving - the taste and buzz. I got into healthy eating and gave up sugar. After that the cravings went way down. I realized I craved the coke in my Cuba Libre more than the alcohol. I then kept a sugar free coke in the fridge and would take a sip once in a while. A 355 ml bottle would last 2 weeks. After getting my sugar addiction under control and being more dedicated to my health the cravings are almost totally gone. I almost have to force myself to have a drink now, more for nostalgia then anything. Its likely that many drinkers are actually suffering more from sugar addiction than alcohol addiction. Try giving up sugar and simple carbs. You may be as surprised as I was.

    @@ianrichards6294 We are all potential scientists. Individuals looking to solve their problems usually practice "pure science". Investigation for the sake of truth. Professional scientists more often practice "corporate science" where they create proof to sell a product. Other scientists practice "authority controlled science" where they back the authorities with the proof they want. We can't depend on the later two for truth. We can't depend on them if there is no profit involved. So, it's up to the individuals, the truth seekers to apply the scientific method we learn in elementary school and be "pure scientists." My original comment was more a hypothesis. I invite you to put on your lab coat and test to see if it's true.

    Things are a lot different when you start drinking at 14 years old and you're now 56. The anxiety your body puts you through makes you feel like dying is better than quitting. People who drink for 10 even 20 years have no idea what I'm talking about. And it's very hard for me to listen to this kind of stuff. Only a true alcoholic knows what I'm talking about. I can really use the help. But things are a lot different from me. When you've drink for over forty years your body Don't let you stop without going through serious consequences and all the comments show. That you guys don't know what I'm talking about.

    26 years alcoholic I no exactly what you mean not as long as you I was thinking wtf where did the years go I decided I wanted to try to stop something my body was telling me do I want to die or do I want to be there for my 7 year old daughter now I feel like if I have a bottle of wine it would taste like poison I do have cravings on day 7 it feels like a blur I think cause I'm noticing reality what help me was instead of polishing a bottle I get on KZread and watch these videos it's the change of habit wish you luck you can do it

    If you want to stop using alcohol, drink a skin full of it and the next morning do a hard cardio or weight workout, you’ll soon get the message as I did at 58, now I’m 60 and feel a lot better and stronger.

    How to give up drinking when it doesn't cause an issue in your everyday life but its still an everyday thing. I have like 6 shots a day when drinking an although it doesn't stop me from performing at work etc It dose cause weight gain stops me from working out and makes me eat a bunch of unhealthy foods.     My anxiety is a huge problem and it is a coping mechanism. However I know it’s not good for my body. Not alcoholic but definitely want to stop socially drinking as well. I’ve gained a lot of weight due to partaking

    Drink a warm Guinness from the tin. I did this and realized just how absolutely disgusting it actually was. It took me a few more months to decide to give up but that experience planted the seed that keep growing that I really was not enjoying drinking at all. The other massive benefit is eating out which is a treat not a regular option for me is now happening twice as often as the bill is halved with no booze. Bonus 😂
