Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video, I tell you how to stop a tailgater in less than 1 minute. If there is someone that is driving close to the rear of your car, you can stop them from continuing to do it within 60 seconds. It's an easy process, and it will also prevent you from getting frustrated with tailgaters that drive too closely to your car!

    This method will work on most people, but there are those it won't and you could make the situation worse and cause them to rage. I have a variation of your method that I've used for years and has NEVER failed. Let off the gas pedal and slow by about 3 mph, as soon as they are forced to brake because they'll otherwise hit you, get back on the gas and resume your original speed. Rinse and repeat as needed. Don't use your brakes!!! You want them to be confused as to what you are doing, it will look unintentional to them and they'll back off. There was only once where I had to repeat this 8 times on a young man because he thought he could force me to get out of his way. After roughly 3 mins he backed off and stayed back. Try it, and I'll bet you start to find that being tailgated is nearly enjoyable. I look forward to it these days, still trying to find someone it won't work on.

    I'll try your method, but it's different stake when you're driving a high end expensive car that you saved on years to buy and the tailgater is usually an ash driving a beat up car or an inbred pickup sht truck driver and probably doesn't know the law on rear ending liability. Various things motivates tailgaters but in the above scenario it's jealousy and low IQ. I've been in this scenario dozen of times and getting really tired of it. I am actually looking at more drastic solutions like a bumper sticker letting them think i have a weapon on hand that can bring down a bear if i need to defend myself (even though i don't have any weapons). I see these wild hunters sometimes having stickers to that effect and i am sure tailgater don't bother them.

    Many decades ago, my best friend got agitated about how much I get wound up about tailgaters. He said, it's simple. Tip your rearview mirrors down and they "just disappear". He added that if someone is being a real tool about tailgating, the best thing to do is NOT tap the brakes, but carefully slow down by removing pressure from your gas pedal. Going slower really drives them bananas and they will eventually pass you...just like you said in this video. These tactics work.

    Major respect when the tailgaters realize what you're doing and gives you distance. I always leave 2-3 car length on interstate to give myself enough room to slow down and generally the driver behind me will do the same. Respect everyone on the road. ✌️

  • @jolaoh

    @jolaoh

    2-3 car lengths is woefully inadequate for highway speed to recognize a problem, decide what to do, and avoid the problem. Over my 41 years of driving I eventually came to the conclusion that it's better to think in terms of following time, not distance. And 3 seconds is the minimum. At 100kph (62mph) that's about 83 meters or 273 feet. This has served me very well. It's not always possible to achieve this, and if not the risk that I will be responsible for an accident increases.

    I did that once. I was driving at night on a 7 lane highway - almost no other cars around. I was not in the fast lane either and some jerk was tailgating me. I changed lanes, he changed behind me. Whether I speeded up or slowed down, so did he. I slowed down to 20 mph and so did he (right on my tail) - and there were hardly any other cars around! When another car came up behind us and the headlights showed his silhouette, he appeared to be screaming and was beating his steering wheel with both hands. I changed my destination and took the exit towards a police station. He then stopped tailgating me.

  • @utdutd8336
    @utdutd83362 жыл бұрын

    This is very good advice. I've been driving for 30 years and this is the best method to deal with tailgaters. I agree completely with the first rule which is to stop looking in the mirrors. The first look and maybe a second is enough to let you know that you are dealing with a tailgater. Once you know it's a tailgater, relax yourself as the man says in the video and decrease your speed slowly and have another look to see what the tailgater is doing. More often than not this slows them down naturally. The drivers may not actually realise that they are tailgating and this method usually snaps them out of the day dream or whatever else that was distracting them. But if the offender is repeatedly getting close to you and pressuring you, then try to completely forget that they are there because if you get into a game of cat and mouse with them you will lose concentration and become anxious and panicky. If this is the case, follow step one again and let them pass at the first possible opportunity. If you're a tough guy, don't get into a confrontation and don't be a hero because it's not worth it and you could end up getting into something unnecessarily tragic. In all my years of driving, aggressive tailgating is the worst driver habit that you will experience and it's important to learn how to deal with it and get out of the way safely. Another thing to remember is that we sometimes become the tailgaters ourselves. How many times have you been in a hurry and you just wished the cars in front of you would fly whilst you're almost pushing them forward with your own vehicle. THAT IS TAILGATING. Be sure to be a good driver and not to do it and stay safe.

However, none of that will stop a tailgater from riding on the bumper of the car in front. In my experience, drivers who tailgate are also likely to drive too fast, weave in and out of traffic, and often change lanes without signaling - the fact is, they're motivated by selfishness, a trait which makes for BAD driving habits!

    This tactic has actually caused road rage, so if you choose to do this, be cautious and ready to take evasive action if the tailgater disproportionately retaliates. Here’s what I mean...this has happened to me when I’ve gently slowed down and I recently saw it happen to an elderly lady who actually wasn’t slowing down, or even going too far under the posted speed limit...she just wasn’t going fast enough for the tailgater in the pickup truck behind her... The tailgater gets frustrated and eventually passes the car in front of them; but then immediately cuts in front of that car and slams on their brakes. Luckily, when this happened to the elderly lady recently, she was actually able to both brake and swerve onto the shoulder and barely avoid slamming into the guy. (And he REALLY locked up his brakes, as his truck fishtailed and smoke came off his tires.) He could’ve killed that older lady, particularly if her reflexes were waning in her later years. I have had the same thing happen and have been equally fortunate to be able to employ evasive, defensive measures and avoid a collision. But I’ve had it happen to me, seen it happen to others, and have heard others recount similar occurrences. It happened to a friend of mine who was run off the road by the tailgater and that person who had been tailgating him got out of their car with a tire iron and came at my friend, who has a concealed carry permit, forcing him to draw his weapon. The tailgater retreated and fled. So just know, while you’re not getting frustrated by following this advice and not looking in the mirror, the tailgater is likely getting frustrated and they may, in the adrenaline rush of anger and frustration, make very bad and dangerous decisions. I don’t have an alternate or better means of dealing with a tailgater...I’m just saying that if you employ this tactic, be alert and ready to drive defensively and react quickly, should the tailgater let their hurried frustration turn into dangerous, vengeful anger. Be safe out there, everyone!

    I have only ever had to do it once, but I got annoyed with a tailgater who kept beeping at traffic lights the instant they went red and amber so this is what I did. I pulled up at a set of lights, knowing he would edge forward and edge forward on the clutch until his bumper was a few inches from my own. Very calmly, I switched the engine off and raised the bonnet, pretending there was something wrong. Of course, the traffic behind us was able to get round but Mr Tailgater had left himself no room for manouevre. I then had the cheek to go back to him and ask him "Would you mind reversing back a bit please?" (knowing it was difficult for him because of the traffic behind) "I need to get to my tool kit!" After about three traffic light changes, I started the engine and gave him the thumbs up! I would like to think he learned a valuable lesson!

    One argument I keep seeing in the comment section is the "get out of the fast lane and I won't tailgate you" argument. The left lane is commonly referred to as the "fast lane", but that is not an accurate description of the lane's purpose. The left lane is the designated passing lane, however, vehicles in the left lane must obey the posted speed limits. A common problem arising from misuse of the left lane is speeding and tailgating. These actions create road rage and increase overall danger. On that note, nobody in the passing Lane, similar to any Lane, should be going under the speed limit... But that also does not provide an excuse to tailgate.

    By legal definition you're completely right, but as you know we live in the real world where everybody speeds on the freeway. You also have to take into account common courtesy. It is not fair to anyone, that one person "going the speed limit" in the passing lane is creating traffic build up. There is an actual law that directly contradicts the speed limit law and you can get pulled over for going the speed limit if you are impeding the flow of traffic. So if everyone else is going 80 (which is the norm in LA) and you're not comfortable going the flow of traffic stay in the right lane. Not justifying tailgating, I'm saying notice your surroundings, like a good driver, and react accordingly.

    no man the problematic is much simpler than that. first you have to remember that you are not a representative of the law. that is very important. a LOT of people think they are given some kind of superhero role. they are not and you are not. got that ? so now, if we are in a situation in which Im driving behind you AND you have NO REASON not to simply pull over and let me pass then, at this exact moment, you are doing nothing else than playing this superhero wannabe sheriff role. I don't think I am wrong by pretending that one common point by people that, for whatever reason, don't care about driving over the speed limit is that they deeply HATE people who act like what this video describes. Just begin by brushing in front of your own door you know ? Now let me also tell you this : I NEVER tailgate someone who is, typically, overtaking a truck. Of course that person has perfectly the right to overtake that truck at the speed limit. Also, I NEVER tailgate someone who is doing something without having any option of doing something else : that's is called respect. However, I DO tailgate anyone if nothing is preventing that person from letting me pass. A good thing is that people acting like the moron in this video describes are only the little exception. The most common reaction is : I see someone coming who wants to pass me, I let him pass. End of story.

    @@BigBubba89877 obviously I am not talking about single lane roads. I am exclusively talking multi-lane highways where the bullshit most frequently happens. in small villages I always drive at the exact speed limit, because it makes sense to have strict speed limits. but you are wrong thinking that people have any responsibility by judging and taking action in order to try to enforce someone else to follow any aspect of the established law by slowing down on purpose or doing things like brake checks. this is maybe what you think and what your parents did teach you but, nevertheless, it is 100% wrong. one day you will play the sheriff against the wrong person, me for example. that day you are subject of sending me in jail and potentially send yourself into a coffin depending on the path it takes. it is clear that neither you or me would win anything by this. you would have played the little sheriff in your car by "chilling" as you say and listening to your radio but 10minutes later it would/could be over for both of us. so what is the point ? you think because you are inside your car nothing can hurt you ? you are a second time wrong if you think that. you understand that the best option is always (and I would say in almost any situation) to simply let people live their lives, if someone (for whatever reason it might be) wants to pass you on the public road and nothing is preventing you from pulling over, then simply do that. if you do not you are exposing yourself to reprisals. maybe 9 times out of 10 it will work but 1 time will the wrong day for you and you will be the one who is going to pay the bill for all other little sheriff's like you. that's the reality.

    I was tail gated three days ago at night 8pm , a dark night; he had his strong glaring head lights on; it made it difficult to see the road ahead ( No street lights as village Road, narrow winding road). He tail gated me for over 4 mins. In the end He overtook me as I tried to give him plenty of side way to overtake me. Then he stopped ; I thought he had cars issue; I continued to move forwards then he started and tailgated me again. I was thinking that this guy must be sick but the Road was dark and I tried to handle the wheel well not to swing to the side or the other side. Then suddenly I veered on the other side but I was quick to compensate for the error. And I kept moving forwards. He continued to tail gate me for another 11 minutes; it was extremely hard for me to see ahead as his head lights were so strong and glaring. Then come to an Intersection I turned to the left ; he followed me as well; then at a Bowling Club with neon lights shining I stopped in the front on the side of the road. He overtook me and drove straight off. That the end of my night mare. Could any one help how to solve this situation as I was concerned that he might hit my rear as it was dark and he drove so close ( 12m behind). There were no other cars behind his ( just 2 cars). Thank you. BJ AUS

    I think the best way to deal with them is to move over if possible. I think slowing down even gradually can piss them off even more. But there are psychopaths who will follow you, like what happened to me this morning -- guy behind me following close, I change lanes with absolutely no one coming. The second I put my turn signal on, he sped up and followed me into the other lane and followed even closer. I pulled into a gas station, got his plate as he sat at a red light, and his ass got reported to the cops. Dude was literally laughing as he tailgated me, like a psycho. These people aren't happy when you do 5-10 over the limit - they want more. I'm trained in defensive driving and run a car blog - trust me, drive safe, stick to the limit (5 over won't get you a ticket), always be looking far ahead, and always try to let assholes pass. Remember that they'll end up crashing some day, not you. It's just really sad they may end up taking out innocent people.

They usually pass when they get the dashed line & there's room before oncoming traffic... then they get stuck behind the next law abiding citizen. It must be frustrating to be a fast driver. I leave early & enjoy my comfort ride, going the speed limit, while listening to some great tunes. 😎 OH, and one of those roads turns into 45 MPH, because you're getting into a more populated area. I let off on the gas & slow down to about 48-50. The ones who WERE driving the speed limit end up on my bumper. Can these people read signs? 🙁

    I use this trick all the time. it usually works quite well. The funny thing is that even though the tailgater thinks that he got rid of you by passing you, the reality of the situation is that you really are the one who got rid of him. However, I do have trouble with some tailgaters on the highway. I live in an area of Canada where even if you are driving the speed limit people get mad at you for not going as fast as they want to go, which is usually 20 kms over the limit. So, if you are driving in the left lane because other drivers are going slower than the posted speed limit and you going at speed limit are passing them, other drivers still get angry at you for not doing 20 km over the limit while in the fast lane. I'm not going to get a speeding ticket just because you want to get one, and, if there are slower cars to my right then I cannot change lanes until that lane is clear. I need a sign on the back of my vehicle that says, "If I am doing the speed limit and if you think that I am going too slow, then you are the one breaking the law, not me!"

    That angers me. I'm passing a semi for example, and doing so fast enough, and half the time some douchebag runs right up to my bumper. I hate to admit it, but I've given hints by flashing the brake lights, and if that didn't work, even brake checking. Either way I get flipped off every time as if I was the asshole. Hey I got one for your dumbass too. Like seriously, I don't get the logic of being a pick to the person in front of you who you depend on to grant your passage. It's not worth your while to do so, and some still don't get the hint. The only time I'll stop playing games in that situation is if others approach behind them. If the semi is up to speed and someone is on my ass, I'll slow right down and get behind them. I have a good mind to toss handfuls of gravel behind me at those douchebags.

    This still is an extremely dangerous technique in some places. That's how I get rid of tailgaters most of the time, when I cannot change lanes to let them pass. But this frustrates tailgaters so much that more often than not, they cut in front of me and brake. Luckily by then I am driving so slowly that I have enough time and distance to brake accordingly. But again, you don't want to piss off a driver who 'thinks' is being late because of you in some parts of the world. They can't pass because of the trucks. Slow down and annoy them or just keep cruising on cruise control? I usually do the latter but that means they are behind me for multiple miles?

    the gradual slow down works like a charm. shifts all the frustration to the tailgater and they have to make a decision. they will honk and yell and give you the finger as they pass, and you have to ignore all that immaturity and just stay calm. you will feel like its a win, and continue with your day without worrying about some douchebag that never learned how to share or respect others

    Best thing to do is to find an area where you can safely pull over. If you can’t, just maintain your speed.

    If you live in England, it’s 3 points and a 100 pound fine. Put a rear camera and pass the footage onto the police eventually we will make the U.K. roads clean again.

    Something similar I’ve done is absolutely slam on the brakes and then when they try to pass I speed up to make sure they’re as angry as I am, it’s always good when both parties are angry as possible before you tell them you’re gonna beat their ass for tailgating. Works every time!

    I accidentally drift out of my lane onto the rumble strip, then jerk it back onto my lane. They think I am sleepy, and pass soon. No problems, as they want to get away from me quickly.

    I always pull over and let tailgaters pass when I can as that's always safe for everyone but when there's no option then this is method I use too as it's also fairly safe (I don't jerk it back in though - just gentle curving movements onto the rumble strip and back - works every time.

    Haha I did this last week on the way to work. Guy behind me was right up my arse! it was 5:55 am, we both start at six. I did this to him! we were both stopped, he didn't pass, I started up again, pretty soon he was back up my trumpet! so I did it again. But then we reached the fork, I go in 124 entrance, he goes in main entrance. But it made him think! I was hoping he would know it was me so we could discuss it. What I want to say is 'The closer you get to me; the slower I will drive, back off and I will go up to the speed limit. encroach on my car zone! - this is what happens! Either overtake, or set off before me - have a nice day!' Don't do roadrage folks it's not cool!

    It's hard not to rage when you are at a stop light and a car speeds up and stop close to your bumper. I've been rear ended before cause a lady fell asleep on her medication at a red light now I got neck problems. I go crazy now now when someone is driving too close or at a light iam scared one day I'll get out and do something bad I got protection and every time it's someone new.

    I usually go 5 mph over the speed limit because I understand most people drive a little over the limit, but if they continue to tailgate me I slow down to the actual limit.

    The ultimate revenge: Ignore the TG! Don't do anything. Like they're not even there! If they sense they're not getting a reaction out of you, they'll either pass you or fall back to a more reasonable following distance.

    I was in this situation today. Unfortunately, I was on a one lane road. (Just for the record, I was doing 30 mi/h in a 30 zone, and it was raining and dark out. Also, I was going around a sharp curve that leads to a traffic light.) I released the gas to slow down until I could safely pull off the road, just like in this video.

    I find that I get tailgated alot but I am on a highway ...now I have slowed down and undoubtedly it does upset the tailgater but I find like you have mentioned that the faster I go they just want me to move faster ...on a smaller road this is hard because it causes the driver behind the tailgater to also get annoyed. Is there something you can suggest for smaller roads. thansk so much

    In Michigan it's really bad. I'm learning to be more calm when it happens but yes if I'm already doing 80 in a 70 zone and you're tailgating, that's a problem. I've seen lots of accidents in the winter months for people who do that too. It's crazy because we get alot of ice and snow and people still do it...But in Florida it's so different. People just drive around you if you're going too slow. Like it's not even an issue. And Miami traffic is insane.

    In a situation where they cannot pass you it can still work as you slow down it can give a chance for you to go back up to an appropriate speed while increasing the distance. If he continues u just continue to let off the has until he realizes tailgating is only going to make you go slower.
