How To Stop A Car When Brakes Fail-Driving Lesson

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video, I show you how to stop a car when brakes fail. If you are in the unfortunate event where your brakes don't work, you should use these steps to safely bring your car to a stop. It is really important to get your car towed to a safe location once you have brought it to a complete stop. Don't try to drive your car again once you have realized that your brakes have failed (until you get it fixed).

I agree your life is more important than the drivetrain but the point he's trying to make is don't make saving your own life harder by trying to downshift with a now broken engine and transmission because you didn't take the the time to learn how to properly downshift especially if you drive an automatic you can seriously mess things up to the point where your car is just in neutral no matter what you do because you damaged your clutch plate and gears or because you damaged the fins on your torque converter.

Step 1: Stay calm. Step 2: Put hazard lights on to let people know you need extra space. Step 3: Downshift. Step 4: Pump you brake. (It's wort a try) Step 5: Last resort is to use your emergency brake. Press the button on your emergency brake and slowly bring it up. Quick note: Do not turn your car off to allow you to maintain power steering. If your brakes fail once, do not risk it. Have it towed for checking and repairs. You're welcome.

I had my brakes fail going 100km/h. This was many years ago and I was still pretty much a fresh driver, but I instinctively did exactly what this guy is talking about (well, except the hazard lights) and managed to safely stop - I even managed to not stop in the middle of the road, but steer on to a small patch of gravel next to the road where we waited for road assistance. A friend that was in the car with me thought I was joking when I said the breaks are not working because I said it so calmly like it's no big deal and then also handled it like it's no big deal 🤣. The guy who came to pick up the car was also bewildered by my calm reaction but said it probably saved our lives. I'm actually very thankful for this ability, it was not the first nor the last situation where I kept my head clear when most people would go in instant panic mode.

Last year I lost my brakes. It was terrifying. Thankfully my grandpa had taught me what to do. I turned my hazards on, shifted down and voice dialed 911. I didn’t find the emergency brake in time (car was relatively new to me) and ended up traveling through two major intersections. I still don’t know how I wasn’t hit. I ultimately ran out of room and smashed into a tree in someone’s back yard. I was bruised but not seriously hurt and thank God no one else was hurt. I still have nightmares about it.

I had my brakes fail in August. I was coming up to a stop sign with a car already stopped in front of me. I had very little time to react because I was on a downhill slope. There were no cars on the opposite side of the road so all I could do was veer around the guy. It all happened in a split second and I had absolutely no time to do all the steps you are describing in the video. I DID panic of course but I was able to slow my car by dragging the wheels along the curb which worked. I went completely blank and forgot all about the E-brake. I was more concerned about oncoming traffic. Luckily for me it was a quiet time of day so I steered into the first empty commercial driveway I found and hit a pile of rocks which stopped me. If I hadn't slowed the car along the curb first, I would have gone straight into the side door of the business. I was very lucky that day!!! The guy that I passed was very rude and flipped me the bird for veering around him. My faith in mankind still sucks.

@SangreFria Imagine running at a high speed and then trying to suddenly and forcefully stop urself, you’d definitely trip and probably roll right? Trying to suddenly stop something going at high speeds always causes a sudden shift in weight distribution to the front and causes the object in question to propel forward. If I’m remembering highschool science correctly, I believe the term is inertia, where an object in motion will continue some of its path after stopping or w/e. That’s basically why. Most likely when driving ur gonna be doin 40 and above. Unlike breaks where you can control how slowly or quickly u want to stop, with handbreaks n shit there is no “slowly” if you just tug it up in a panic. U try to pull ur handbreak doing 40 to 100 and the force is gonna suddenly shift all the weight on the front of ur car and propel it into a roll

  • @devilsgambit738

    2 жыл бұрын

@@thephoenix7090 hm I think what people recommend you doing usually is to take your foot off the gas, shift into neutral and just let the car go as long as possible, eventually the car will slow down enough to a speed where you can try to pull the hand break. I don’t think slowly pulling it up will help at a high speed persay, but a somewhat lower speed maybe. Your course of action should go something as follows: take your foot off the gas but keep it pumping the breaks just incase and put the car in neutral, turn on hazards + start laying on the horn to make sure people know somethings up, if you have your phone on hand try to call the cops for assistance, try to put your car onto something - like grass or dirt at the side of the road to further slow it down (not gravel tho) - assess your path, if you can see you’re coming up to a potentially dangerous area ie an intersection try to assess the safest course of action to avoid a collision, once you’re at a safe enough speed where you think you probably won’t go through the windshield, start to slowly lift the hand break I see a lot of people say to just turn the car off but do NOT do this. A lot of cars now have electronic steering (I know mine does) so while turning off the car would kill the engine -although it would still not bring you to an immediate stop as the wheels would still be in motion- it would also lock your steering and oops now you have no control over your break-less vehicle I’m sure there’s more you could do, I’m just going off the few things I know of lol

Very informative 🙏🏽 I’ve seen so many local stories of people losing their life over break failure with the last story being a pregnant mother and I just had to research the proper ways to come to a stop. I knew just pulling the E break was a bad idea but it’s good to know down shifting helps. I always said in this case on a road with good shoulder I’d just veer into the grass and let the car stop on its own if possible but these other options seems great as well. Thanks for the info, it could really save lives ❤️

This is a great advice, especially the hand breake one. But this wouldn't help me if i did any of these steps when this happened to me. When my breaks failed to work i was on a side street, rush hour and students everywhere. I was approaching a stop light runing about 15mph when i realized my breaks aren't working, so what i did is i quickly turned my car to the first parking entrance i saw and had to let it crash to a thick light pole. All of these happened in like 4 or 5 seconds. But hey these tricks you showed us might help some drivers when they have the problem. To everyone just drive safe and have your car checked often if everything is still in good condition.

Sometimes you can make the car swerve and rock back and forth. That converts your excess speed energy into scrubbing the tires on the pavement, and working the springs and shock absorbers. Such getting rid of energy is exactly what your brakes do to slow your car. In some cases, it would be in your interests to tip the car over on its side rather than ramming straight on at speed into the car ahead. Why make others into victims because you car had a problem?

@@geoh7777 You should only swerve when you are on a wide open road going less than 45. If you know for a fact you are going to hit the car in front of you, pull the emergency brake all the way up. It will make you lose control, but it will slow you down a lot and reduce the possible injuries

Thanks for telling how to correctly use handbrake for such situation. I know when we pull the handbrake abruptly, we may lose control. So the handbrake has to be pulled slowly as shown.

Do not bring the gear to neutral as it will increase the speed of the car. The engaged gear will help reduce the speed.

An additional comment at the end is, "Practice for a few weeks this set of steps to take to bring your car to a stop." The more this set of steps is put into muscle memory, the better. Practicing these steps may also reveal particular peculiarities about your car, such as moving the auto trans lever to a lower setting might require something additional such as pushing a button, which can be forgotten by a surprised and scared driver. It's also easy for the driver under stress to push the shift lever the wrong way.

DONT use hazzard 1st it wont slow u down time wasted use park brake 1st down shift to lower gear it help to slow down turn engine off u can still steer the wheel like old school car do with no power steering if engine still on it still give power to your transmission on your torque convert which means it still can give u power to your wheels there for your car can still move forward like when u at traffic light you are on lower gear take your foot off the accelerator your car still can creep forward with the engine is on ,if the engine is off the fluid on the torque convert will try to Neutralized with the stalled engine witch help you slow down and the fluid and gears in the transmission cause fiction that can slow u down if u keen u can try moving your steering wheel left to right which make more fiction on the wheel that can slow u down to if your still keen try moving slowing into the side kerbs :P
