Honestly if someone wants to get into the table top GAME itself not just the models I’d recommend Table Top Simulator. It doesn’t require a lot for a game so a simple family computer can run it, it costs like $10, and you can reasonably play any army. It also stops a person from spending like $200 for a starter game of 500 pt for a single faction and lets you go wild with all the factions. Not only that but if you have an online buddy who is into the hobby they can show you how to play online

This is a very essential viewing because, whether you intend to paint models, play armies, or just engage with the fictional setting, the process is far more elaborate and obtuse than it needs to be because 40K _insists_ on being based around a tabletop miniatures game and Games Workshop _insists_ on hiking the prices like they have a monopoly on the spice melange.

I'm new to the table top and started Tyrinids since I was able to get the leviathan box and the swarm onslaught box locally. Played my first game with them and did some reading and realized that the current Tyranids playstyle in 10th was not for me. Shelved that army and started a death guard army since mortarian was the model that made me want to get into the hobby. I love all the debuffs ,attrition, and war crimes. Great video!

I'd honestly recommend going with space marines, I'm in between armies right now, because my first army was Necrons, and it just burnt me out that I would get a crumb of support, and felt like all the lore was too vague(it mostly being the war in heaven). I'd also say this was before I got into the Infinite and the Divine story, but even then I feel no inclination to get into them again after that

I started with the Orks the Evil Suns, back in the day. I then joined the Marines and never had anyone to play with after that, but I would have gone AdMech with my second army maybe Knights? As soon as the Novels came out I started buying those to get my 40k fix. So I get how hard it can be to start especially with the reading, best advice is to pick a faction and look for books about them and branch off from there. Yet another great video still working my way through your colab video, but keep up the great work, my money is being well spent and I am here for the long run. If you ever make it to Maryland or DC let me know I would love to buy you a beer

For anyone looking for a guard army my personal recommendation is the Tempestus Scions. They’re basically elite special forces which you can use as an army unlike karskin. They’re simple and easy to use while hitting hard. Their guns can penetrate ceramites. Tenth edition gave them lot of buffs. They’re overall fun to play.

Hi Arthur! Feedback on your editing: 1. It has improved a ton during the past few months! 2. The still inserts of models and such could linger a little longer! They are more interesting than the panning wallpapers, in my opinion. 3. When used exclusively the said wallpapers can get dry. Have you considered inserting gameplay / cutscenes here and there? 4. I love the background music😂 never change it✋ Where did you find it? Looking forwards to seeing the channel grow!

  • @Infinity_Coda

Necrons are a decent starter faction. They're pretty tough and therefore somewhat forgiving gameplay wise, have a good variety of models without tipping into decision paralysis levels like marines, and can be the easiest army to paint that still teaches you skill and technique. Outside that, codex compliant marines are solid and very easy, chaos marines are more difficult to paint but still a good choice, and I'd throw orks in as well since they have a pretty distinct identity and are pretty easy to grasp but still have depth to their roster and play style if you want it. I started with Space Wolves because I liked the Nordic/fantasy barbarian flair, but that was before Primaris. I really don't recommend picking up any divergent chapters besides Black Templars right now, they're all either waiting for updates or have very unstable rules like Deathwatch.

My first army was Necrons, since 9th Ed they have become much more rounded then before, in my eyes at least making for a great army to start. And if you are worried about painting, just go with the basic silver and green that the army had before 9th.

I think imperial guard is a decent place to start. Thier concept is very intuitive, they have a lot of unit diversity, and they have a multiple great book series to start learning the setting with. They slant shooting but that's honestly more intuitive than melee and they aren't without punchy units if you want to fix bayonets.

I would say a great first book would be The Infinite And The Divine. It’s Necrons, but it’s only one of a few necron books. And because it’s Necrons, and especially because it’s Trazyn and Orican, they have a lot of the setting’s history just as a part of things. You get to see a little touch of pretty much everything the galaxy has to offer thanks to Trazyn and his pokeballs. They have some fights with the eldar (exedites specifically), space marines, orks, genestealers, and even other Necrons. You get to see what life is like on an imperial planet over thousands of years of its history. And it’s all done in a very fun and enjoyable read that’s as close to outright comedy as the setting gets. 11/10, great starting point, just know that not every book is going to be as good as it.

I see many of you commenting on the price of 40K. I think for around 2000$ you can have a large size army & all the books , paint & tools you need to keep you busy for quite a while. I think its very reasonable especially if you compare to other hobbies. I snowboard quite a bit & that's about 1200$ for your board & bindings 500$ for your boots 800$ for your snow suite 200$ helmet & 250$ for maintenance tools . At that price you don't even have your pass which depending on where you are is between 350 - 1200 $ a year. You could do the same exercise with many others like fishing , paintball , airsoft , biking etc... If you think about all the different activities you can do they all cost thousands of dollars. 160ish dollars a month is not that bad. No?

I wanted to get into 40k but it was daunting. I gave Space Marine a try but I was too confused and nothing clicked. Finally I gave the game a second chance and I still just couldn't understand the appeal. When there was a reference I would go to the wiki and be bombarded with lore that further disconnected me. It took me reaching the big bridge charge toward the end for it to click. 40k isn't about lore, it is just about the vibe. Bringing together cool things and cool ideas, looking death in the face right along side your friends and charging on. Since then I found that I particularly vibe with the Salamanders. I was sad that I couldn't find a chapter that fir black and red, alot of black and white, but not black and red. Lo and behold the Salamanders successor chapter, the Black Vipers. Match made in heaven for me. I haven't started the tabletop because I'm in gradschool and games workshop is too expensive. But I did get the whole salamander series of books for Christmas and I'm having a blast reading it when I can.

There are so many computer games out there ranging from awful to just beautiful. You are into strategy? Try Dawn of War. You are into Action? Try Boltgun. You are in RPGs? Try Roque Trader. If any of those games makes you hunger to learn more about the universe, just go for it. If not, you had a good time playing a good computer game. I started with Hero Quest and Star Quest (German names) but quickly got into the computer games like Warhammer 40000: Chaos Gate from 1998. I just loved it for the gameplay AND the lore.

i'd argue that making up your own chapter or army with it's own aesthetic is actually better for beginner players because like, beginner's aren't going to know why to care about what each marine chapter means, aside from the colour scheme. Chances are too that beginners are gonna be like, a group of friends in high school, and making up their own little guys with their own reasons to fight each other makes more sense than trying to conform to something that already exists. It's a very modern mindset to want to lock in to the existing lore and styles in order to be able to connect with a wider scene online or in game stores, imo.

There is an entire universe of history and lore. Here are some tips that I would recommend: 1. Learn about our own history! We are in the WH40k history, so by learning what has happened irl, know that it happened in WH40k with some minor twist or flavor, and the Emperor probably is running around. 2. Like real life historians pick a point that sounds interesting to you. Find a figure or event then find all the accounts and books involving them or it. 3. Watch lore channel videos. 4. Read the Horus Heresy series.

I wouldn't start with Deathwatch, getting a grasp on their rules is a new challenge every edition. But space marines are a good start (just don't paint yellow)

Custodes are a great first faction. Limited weapons choice, simple style of play, and an extremely low skill floor.

as a new player, i don't think there's a "best faction" to start with. As a new player you just gotta watch some lore videos and videos on how certain armies play, and than based upon that you pick an army that you think is cool and stick with that one in order to slowly build up to a 3000pts army. I chose Chaos Space Marines because i'm a contrarian, like their lore (veterans of the long war) and i really like their miniatures + they offer a wide variety of minis and ways to play. Wanna go balls to the walls with melee, world eaters Wanna go full magic, thousand sons Wanna mix-match a bit of everything, black legion

Started with Mechanicus cause I'm a nerd, seconded Thousand Sons because I am a nerd that likes magic, now I am working on Tzeentch Daemons because I want something I can run with my Thousand Sons while maybe giving AoS a try once I've built up enough. Plastic crack everybody.

Having all the options as the Space Marines sure is fun, but it can be dauting as a newcomer to chose between that crap ton of units available. I think having too much choice can be overwhelming; same thing for the loadouts within Deathwatch killteams. Custodes was my first faction, I think its a good starter, even better than marines. Here's why: - Its one of the cheapest faction, probably the cheapest unless you dip your toes into formerly ForgeWorld resin stuff. The Combat Patrol is also very good points-wise (hopefully it stays as such!); - You have tough models which hit hard and are multi-role. This is a very forgiving playstyle. Sure they are not the best at shooting, but you will learn the basics of positioning and be incentivized to plan a path to reach the enemy without being punished too hard for poor moves. The only thing you lack is psychic, a footnote in 10th edition; - Limited choice of models that are all mostly well-rounded makes it hard to go wrong with purchases; - The models are gorgeous but also very easy to paint, its encouraging to get nice results as a new player

I bought Boltgun knowing barely anything ab WH40K. I love fps's so I was like "ah hell yeah, new shooty shooty" but like I have this thing where I have to learn ab the universe something is in bc then I just feel like I don't belong. I spent a week learning about lore before I played the game and basically immediately fell in love on day one of lore vids. Through courage and honour we march for Macragge, we shall know no fear. Btw.. Ultramarines are my boys, gotta love my blue berries lol. I know it's literally the easiest thing bc they are the poster boys but I like the Roman vibe lol

If the army that you want to start with is kind of a bitch to paint would you recommend learning with a simple unit first or just send it and re paint them once you have more experience?

What about a Chaos Marine army. Nothing aligned, not strictly Thousand Sons, World Eaters, or Death Watch, but just Chaos Undivided? That allows you to encounter every aspect of the game just the same as playing Space Marines.

In terms of models, I say it depends. I would honestly pick Kill Team or Space Hulk in terms of board games. Kill Team gives you a lot of options and is cheap model wise. Space Hulk is just an awesome game tonplay and wish we got more of. Video games, you have plenty to play. Books (After giving some fun youtube videos) - 40k: Dante, Night Lords trilogy, and Necron books are a must read for me. - 30k: Horus Rising, and then wish the person Good luck from there.

Great video once again! One hard disagree though: Necrons are in fact a GREAT beginner army. Not having any psychic shenanigans is almost a non-issue in 10th edition, but Necrons offer something in all other aspects of the game, are reliable in almost everything they do and relatively forgiving on top of it, and also easy to paint for a beginner. As for Deathwatch: I would rate them as pretty terrible for beginners. There are tons of special rules to keep track of, you can seriously shoot yourself in the foot by "just randomly building models from a box" and they are NOT easy to play. The potential for early frustration is huge with Deathwatch, something you want to avoid at all cost at the start.

Tyranids were my first faction in 40K back in 5th edition. I wouldn't recommend them now due to their insanely low availability unless you know good places to buy them. Half of their line, roughly, has been sold out on GW's site for months.
