About 3 years ago I decided to try to grow rhubarb from your seeds since I never seemed to have luck growing from roots I have bought. I decided to start indoors and it ended up being a really cold spring. I ended up getting busy and I had left my rhubarb plants in cups sitting outside behind my garage. So, I figured the plants had died and I never really gave it a thought as the season went on. Fast forward to the next spring, I was cleaning behind my garage and I noticed my rhubarb was growing back! I couldn't believe it! I thought I had killed it. I'm excited this year to finally have some rhubarb to harvest as it will be it's 3rd or 4th year. Thank you for such great seeds!

How to SAVE SEED from the Rhubarb Plant to propagate new plants from seed. Let the Rhubarb flower. Just wait for the seed stalks to bloom and pollinate, then allow the seeds to grow until the stalk dries out. You'll know that the seed is ready to harvest when you see it turn dark brown or you start to see fallen seeds on the leaves. Cut the stalks and brush the seeds off onto a cookie sheet for further drying, then package them up for storage in the fridge for safekeeping.

I saved seed last fall and left it in shed/garage (unseated) through winter, Minneapolis. In late April early May I used rooting mix in 4 inch pots and kept it moist. Seed germination and sprouts emerged by May 31. I kept it watered in full sun and mid August transplanted to 6”-8” pots. Gifting them to neighbors to plant soon, September. I have more established and productive rhubarb than I can use. :)

Just found your videos and am loving them! My husband and I are getting ready to embark on our own homesteading adventure here in MI. We are in the process of purchasing 5.5 acres of property where we plan to have a large garden and raise chickens for eggs (and possibly meat). Neither one of us were raised with teachings on self-sufficiency or homesteading mindsets, so we are going to be figuring it all out as we go. Keep the great content coming and we will keep learning and growing big! :)

Timely video! I am going to start my seeds today! I purchased rhubarb seeds from you this year, and I am looking forward to watching them grow. I have a sunny corner of my yard currently home to three very large hostas. A friend wants the hostas, so I am going to replace them with the rhubarb! This will be my perennial garden with asparagus I planted from seed last year (so tiny!), horseradish root (contained in a large pot...don't worry!), hopefully these yet-to-be-started rhubarb plants, and then I need to plant strawberries in with the asparagus. Hopefully within the next year we will add some berry bushes and a 4-in-1 apple tree to make our "permaculture" mark on our property.

Hey Luke, love your videos, theyre so informative and inspiring! I've had the same rhubarb plant for atleast 4 years now. And this year, I'm not quite sure why, but after first harvest (and after it flowered) the outer portions of the leaves are turning a deep red/red brown. I also live in upstate New York, I'm not sure if it's just the heat, or if it's more of a nutrient deficiency, if you have any thoughts, please let me know. I've watched some of your other common plant issue videos and I tried a few different things and hasnt seem to make a real change.

I’m worried the seedlings will start to have root rot from all this rain. Is there any way to save them? Should I dig them up or just leave them alone and hope they weather the storm? Thanks!

Help ! I've tried rhubarb 2 years in a row. They start out looking GREAT. But, and this is the BIG BUT, once in my sandy soil they gradually die one at a time. They go from healthy and robust to pitiful and DEAD. I am in S.C. with an 8 month growing season and for some crops they go in the ground in January. Any thoughts. A side note, I went to buy seeds for my fall garden but everything that you talked about in your August planting video is sold out. Any estimated time for these seeds to be in ? Carrots, peas, radish etc. You are the GREATEST !
