Amazing how we can really hear the chords melodically when you play like that,
@LoGsounds

For sure! After all, melodies are mostly made of chord tones, just listen to nearly any vocal melody. It's really the way guitar has been traditionally taught, with an emphasis on scales and scale shapes, that has made people forget that chord tones are the literal answer for creating melodies. For EVERY genre as well.

Chords are a guitar-based advancement of what Bach tried to do when he invented scales.
Love how you break down things into simple to understand concepts - I'm learning a lot even though I've played for decades.

I'm glad to hear it. That is my goal!
Brrrooooo this just made me think in a whole other level and way. Thank you Jesus; and thank you
Thanks! You are the only guitar teacher who could help me make the jump from chording and finger picking patterns to soloing. I cannot thank you enough. You more than earned my measly $5.

Totally agree. Someone once said, “you never really understand a subject until you can explain it to another person so that they understand it.” LoG is the Jedi Master!
Man i genuinely admire how great your videos are! not only are you explaining it perfectly but it’s straight to the point with no ads no sales pitch! Keep up the great content man👍 (i wish i had these videos when i first started)

Glad you think so!
Yes. Yes. Yes..great way to say it
Play say a C7 chord. C-E-G-Bb (1-3-5-b7) are the chord tones. You can stay on those all day. D-F-A (2-4-6) are passing tones from the Mixolydian scale, and quite easy to use. That’s 7 notes out of the 12 in the chromatic scale. The final 5 Db-Eb-Gb-Ab-B (b2-b3-b5-b6-7) can all be used as chromatic passing tones, meaning don’t stay on them too long EXCEPT for b3 and b5 which are “Blues notes” and can be made to work longer. Always resolve b3 UPWARDS to 3, a chord tone, and not the reverse; going from 3 to b3 will sound wrong. That’s how I use all 12 notes against a Dominant 7th chord in a Blues. That’s a starting point; other chord qualities require different approaches.

Thanks for the comment. For sure, all good stuff. I somewhat disagree with the 3 to b3 sounding wrong, I've been leaning towards it lately for some reason! I think the main thing people have issues with however is the actual act of changing chords. Playing and learning all 12 notes over a single chord I think is pretty doable, it's being able to look at those notes over the chord, but then also over the next chord in real time. So what's even better in my opinion (what I'm getting into with this series) is looking at C7 and memorizing the root (C) is the same as the 5th of F7 (the next chord in a standard blues). Or C7's 3rd will move back a fret and become F7's b7, etc. These are the types connections I find most valuable as it's a clear path through the changes.
Been doing this for a while,Cant go wrong when playing the actual notes of the chord.Great part 1.Cant wait for the next.
one of the best teachers in this platform 👏👏
Thanks for explaining the theory, and simplifying things. You're a great teacher.
as a beginner player , your videos make a lot of sense and are pushing me to think things differently . Thanks for the videos!
you have no idea how much this short rearranged my brain chemistry
Yeah I tell my students this frequently. Good advice
I've played guitar for 12 years and I never thought of it this way🤯

Spend the next 6 months becoming super familiar with triad shapes all over the fretboard and become a better guitar player than you ever thought you'd be

Correct!
While yes this is crucial, chords come from scales. You can be cognizant of chord tones while playing the scales. Also it helps with enclosures and chromaticism as well
@LoGsounds

Of course. However this is for the people that only play scales and never think about chords whatsoever in their lead/melodies. In my experience whenever you first introduce the concept of chord tones to someone who has never considered them, you have to force them to only play those tones. Otherwise they fall back into their habits of running scales and not paying attention. The ideal setup is to play whatever you want, literally all 12 notes, while always understanding what any given note will be on top of the chord you are playing. The problem is guitar players often don't do this because they're so reliant on patterns that they don't really think about the notes under their fingers.
I actually understood that one ! 🤣 yes !
I guess it would be good to go through your "how to think about chords" and "chord ideas" playlist as well before this new series. This sounds awesome though and def what I need to practice and learn more about. Have always just learned songs so never really learned to improve besides playing the minor pentatonic or major scale etc.

The "how to think about chords" would definitely help. Really anything that will get you thinking about the individual notes and chord shapes. We'll be doing that in this series as well however. wish someone told me this a years ago😢
Great lesson!, I think most of us rock players reach this point when we go - how did Jerry Garcia get sixty thousand to show up?
I'm a bit confused. You just use the chord shape but several frets up?
thanks for the tips....can you give tips or lessons on voice leading and counterpoint. ...?

possibly in the future. Closest thing I have for that would be this series: kzread.info/head/PL1HaLokJCJ6Io8GBa9d7aANeSXBPofr7e
Great lesson. Maybe loop those chords so we can really hear it
How can i play like that
learn note not shapes, learn all the notes on your fret board and think on notes, learn scales and how chords are make then this makes sense and is easy
“ Noodle in the scale of the key ignoring chord progressions. “I had to get away from those people for good . Ouch.
how do you formulate the chord shapes to play on? do you make triads or a variation of the barre chord? i was just wondering if there was any particular formula for that that may help a little
@LoGsounds
11 ай бұрын
All of the small chord shapes I'm playing off of are basic triads of each chord. When you play small chord shapes like these on groups of three strings, the order is pretty much always the same. When you have the root (1) as the lowest note (lowest in pitch) The order will always be 1 3 5, so 1 on the G string, 3 on the B string, 5 on the high E string. When you have the next note, the 3rd as the lowest note, The order will always be the same but starting with 3, so 3 5 1. 3 on the G string, 5 on the B string, 1 on the high E. And finally when you have the next note, the 5th as the lowest note, The order will again be the same but starting on 5, so 5 1 3. 5 on the G string, 1 on the B string, 3 on the high E string. Using small chord shapes like these to navigate through leads is incredibly valuable, as it maps out with very easily digestible shapes where all of the chord tones are. Hope that makes sense.
dont think feel and you will go places over think and get stuck
Dear LoG, Question : If i play the exact chord tones to the respective chord in the progression, how will i be able to create tension and release since the chord tone notes on the chord will always sound like home(notes used to give a sense of release/completion) ? Thanks man, you rock !

Thanks for the comment. To achieve the sound you're describing you *target* chord tones, you do not *only* play them. If you only play chord tones you will be simply playing the notes that are already happening behind you all the time, which can give a somewhat plain sound. This is the problem people usually get when they only play arpeggios, you're not really getting any other colors other than what are already happening in the chord. However If you utilize the other notes to help emphasize those chord tones, that is where the color comes from. And in fact as you experiment you might start to prefer certain non-chord tones, like landing on the 2 of a minor chord. It's all about learning the flavors of each note available in the general chord sound, which include the normal chord tones but also every other note. However regardless of what you do, it's always important to have the chord tones highlighted in your mind, as that will give you the notes that lock perfectly into the chord, allowing you to plan ahead as you play through the changes. This is all something you will see as you continue through the series, Thanks for watching!

This vedio for beginners 😅
Hahaahaha😂
Can you play a little bit slower after explaining.
What the hell is wrong with these fingers !
Ooooooooooooh. After all these years of wasting time on scales...🙄
Not impressed
OK, but what happens when a song has a pedal tone droning say in E♭? Oh, I know, call Yngwie. Your idea works sometimes.
@LoGsounds
5 ай бұрын
It's actually even easier to do this strategy over a drone, because you can come up with your own chord progressions in your lead as long as the drone works with the chords. Some very cool sounds are possible with this, and many people have done this sound in the past.
