4 years after the promise took place, here is the much requested impressions turorial. In this series I will teach you the theory that I have developed around learning impressions followed by a how to guide that gives you my process. Impressions / impersonations such as Morgan Freeman from the Shawshank Redemption, Gandalf from Lord of the RIngs and Jesse Pinkman from Breaking Bad.
Charlie Hopkinson is a comedic impressionist who specialises in voices from current television shows and films.
He started learning impressions in 2012, at the age of 20.
After graduating from the University of Warwick in the summer 2013 he took 4 months out to concentrate on KZread videos full time, including producing his most viewed video to date ‘Morgan Freeman and 40 other impressions’ with just over 9 million views. This foray into being a ‘full time KZreadr’ was cut short as he went travelling for 3 months before starting a 2 year teaching Graduate scheme with Charity ‘Teach First’
While teaching he has performed in and narrated the 4 episode series ‘Lookalikes’ as Morgan Freeman. The show and the narration received a positive reception. The show aired on Channel 4 during the prime time slot of Friday 10pm for three weeks. Charlie also performed with other well known impressionists for an unaired pilot.
Charlie has worked for several prominent brands in relation to their products, including google and formula 1.
Since the summer of 2016 Charlie has once again dived into the world of KZread, for the first time producing content on a weekly basis. He is also focusing on live performance; he has performed in live venues a total of 3 times to date.
His top impressions include:
Morgan Freeman (Red -Shawshank redemption)
Sir Ian McKellen (Gandalf - Lord of the Rings)
Aaron Paul (Jesse Pinkman - Breaking Bad)
Alan Rickman (Snape - Harry Potter)
Michael Caine (Alfred - Batman)
Jon Snow (Game of Thrones)
Jack Sparrow (Pirates of the Carribean)
Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained, Inglorious bastards)
Alec Guiness (Ben Kenobi - Star Wars)
Agent Smith (The Matrix)
Sean Bean (Boromir - Lord of the Rings)
Richard Armitage (Thorin Oakenshield - The Hobbit)
Charles Dance (Tywin Lannister - Game of Thrones)
Tyrion Lannister (Game of Thrones)
Bryan Cranston (Walter White - Breaking Bad)
Frank Underwood (House of Cards)

I think about how our own voices develop, from the manner we speak and our accent. It changes over time. I think it's the same with impressions. You begin to talk like the one you're impersonating and over time your vocal cords can adapt and work just like theirs does.

My friends and I sit and have conversations with impressions, and my family always said that I have a good talent. So I’m good from that part😂. But there are impressions that I know I can do more but I always thought it’s based on someone’s voice of how low or high they can go. So I guess it’s really matter of muscle memory and practice and not just vocals …

I will say, I am auditory dyslexic. So, I have to overly process when people speak just so I can understand them. So, sometimes the ability comes through struggle. It's often easier in my brain to recite a line by mimicking the voice and cadence of who I heard it from. Obviously has caused work related issues where I mimic my boss, back to my boss to confirm what he said... lol

Charlie Hopkinson as I recall is was a matter of degree, and emphasis on personal quirks to get laughs. An impersonator could “do” Burt Lancaster; an impressionist will “out Burt Lancaster” Burt Lancaster. I’m sure there’s overlap. Rich Little as Nixon could be either I guess but that’s Nixon. Really like your video.

The whole your voice sounds different to you thing is something I've known about for a while. But something I have never realized is what that means for impressionists. You get to hear what Morgan Freeman hears when he speaks. That seems so strange to me.

yaaay oh man, this is already looking well organized. As for impressions i would recommend starting off with one that isn't a lower voice like morgan freeman or something too high, rather a pitch most people will find it easier to get to - to start off with - as then it's one fewer task we have to do. Maybe even Jesse Pinkman? If you feel it is one of your stronger impressions, which I think it is. Someone of that pitch, not too low or too high.

I been a vocalist for a couple years now and I noticed one thing. You got to shut off your brain as you do this. It's in the connection of the breath and allowing whatever to happen, happen without resisting.

I play the piano. I think of it as a musician stand point. The voice of Goku is by Sean Shemmel who's a musician. Not sure about the voice of Vageta (Chris Sabat). Awesome video man.
