Great video Jamie! Finally I start to understand the improvisation. The best video and the best advice is about the home note and 2 tones above and 2 under. This is probably the most important information, because until now I tried to play in the key but wit the home note at beginning and then naturally around the 3rd note of pentatonic scale. After you video I am now confused from the scales, when to play major, when minor and when blues (and which) scale? 😀

Hi Martin, glad you enjoyed the video!
this is amazing, it's like you're in my head and you know exactly what I'm dying to work on!! I've lost the chance for so many solos growing up (i was that scared kid in 5th and 6th grade jazz band) for lack of "playing off script"... I actually recently started to write my own music to see if that will get me better with improv and i've been working more and more chord progressions... but yes, rhythm is lost when i'm not sure how to compliment the song with the "right" improv! I can't wait for your new class coming out, this video was AMAZING! thanks again

Turns? Mix up the rhythms? Add a few extra notes from the pentatonic scale? Use dynamics and bends/vibrato? That kinda stuff.
Thanks. That was awesome, explained in a way that was very simple and made me think about how I need to simplify what I am playing most of the time and not sacrifice my timing. I did want to ask a random question to a pro who plays with other musicians. I have issues in both bands I play in with not being able to hear myself. I play in a covers band and guitars and drums dominate😁. When you perform what is your set up? In ear monitors? Does your sax you go through front of house? Do you use a pedal to control tone, volume etc. Sorry the question is off topic, but you are great with advice and always answer which I appreciate. Cheers. Greg
@GetYourSaxTogether
3 жыл бұрын
Hey Greg. Definitely sax goes through FOH. In the old days you used to have a monitor wedge to hear yourself, but now it’s mostly in ears for my gigs. It’s quite high tech though, so more grass roots gigs are still monitors. If you haven’t got a monitor try using a Perspex reflector. You definitely want to use ear plugs as well. It feels weird, but your hearing will get trashed in those bands so don’t ruin your health.
@gregorydutton349
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jamie. I’m not to the pro level, have checked into in ear system but it is very expensive. So wedge it is. I use ear plugs at practice but do find them difficult at gigs - just harder to hear the mix. Thanks for your advice. Cheers.
Fab and strtaightforward instruction, thanks Jamie. Today's lesson shows me I must listen to the great sax players. I want to play rhythm and blues...anything but Jazz - it's not my thing. Jamie can you recommend the sax players that play this type of music. Thanks

Hey Jamie! I just have a little request. I’m starting to get a handle on improvising and studying Ornithology at the moment and transcribing bebop for the first time. While I can think through the changes quite well, I’ve noticed on recordings that my technique is pretty sloppy sounding. I scoop too much which makes me sound out of tune so am working on that. I’d love to see a video showing what a sloppy player sounds like playing a line and what you do as a pro to make it sound so crisp and even. Perhaps you already have something on that? Thanks!
