More steps have to be taken to start an old locomotive like the SD40-2, from what I saw in the video. But after all the prep, oh, that wonderful rhythmic sound! That locomotive was the backbone of American railroading. A true workhorse of the rails.

If this loco had sat out int he rain then you are right, it would need to have the pet cocks opened and engine turned over before trying to start, sure wish I had put that in the video. What's really fun is coaxing one of these things into life outdoors in near freezing temperatures. Diesel doesn't like that and these don't have glow plugs like cars/trucks do. You crank and crank and then *whoof* one cylinder will kick, then *whoof whoof*, then three and so forth until all 16 rumble into life. Then you look up and the entire town is covered in a white haze.

Thank you for this video! Those almost-antique locomotives took a lot of manual setting to start and operate. And some older big military aircraft used external starter units to start one engine that would start the other engines. Indeed prior to starter motors, automobiles had to be hand-cranked. And now there will be self-driving cars.

You are quite welcome Brian, glad you enjoyed. Appreciate very much your stopping by to watch the video my friend.
I learn something new about every video you post. Great video. I remember a big locomotive crane Bethlehem Steel had years ago. That had a pony motor that started the main diesel engine.

These engines have 2 starter motors on them Michael, much needed to turn over these big engines. Glad you liked this one. Pony motors were on some of the old CAT dozers and I had a John Deere model 70 tractor that had a pony, but I took it off and put in an electric start for it, much nicer. @@ccrx6700 I see Dave forgot to mention that locomotive crane was old. Probably early 1950s. Thanks for the information.
Sounds like me trying to start in the morning . Diesels do make a racket.

Love open knife switches simple effective, but our they get replaced with contactors canbuss circuitry to add cost lower reliability.

Yes they are pretty simple and effective Mack. Appreciate very much your visiting with us to check out the video my friend.
Interesting.. I just assumed that to start an engine of that size, a smaller engine is first needed to be started and with that help a larger engine is started, like in some bulldozers. Greetings from Finland.

Glad you enjoyed. It does have 2 starter motors on it to turn that big engine over. Appreciate very much your stopping by to watch the video my Finnish friend.

I just bought a used SD40-2 this afternoon. It's in the basement. Oh, did I mention it's HO scale? 😉

You are right in that ForbiddenMagic, starting one of these locos is actually a pretty simple procedure, but these old emd engines do like their warmth, they don't start well when cold. Appreciate very much your stopping by to watch the video my friend.
Boy, that's a lot easier than starting an old diesel, where you have to blead the moisture out of every cylinder.

If this loco was out in the rain then yes we would open the pet cocks on each cylinder and crank it over before starting Peter. But this was in the shop all night and no moisture got down in the cylinders so no need to. However I do wish I had talked about getting the moisture out of the cylinders in the video, guess I will have to make another video and explain that! Appreciate very much your paying us a visit to check out the video my friend.
Not all that different from starting an F7 with a 567C in it. Excellent video, liked it much!

It's essentially the same block (645 is just the next generation) with a turbo vs roots blower. Sounds almost identical.

I don't imagine it is poowg, although I've never been around the F units to know but seems like the emd engines of old are pretty similar. Appreciate very much your stopping by to watch the video my friend.
