I can't think you enough for telling me about how important straight in shots are it has changed my game completely

Very good video. Entering the world of side spin is a whole different animal. Can be frustrating when normal potted shots are missed but I guess one step back and two forward applies. As others have mentioned, I see a lot of videos that talk on how to use spin, but not many on why or when it’s most advantageous for certain shots or scenarios. Guess it’s pretty common sense of “I need the ball here where it would not go w/o the spin” but definitely a topic for a future video!

For folks that don't have hours to practice aim to thin side of the pocket to use inside/check aim to thick side of pocket to use outside/running english. The less english the less adjustment. Basically once you can start throwing balls in your cue ball control will skyrocket and the game will be easier.

At one pool hall for kids we played at as kids, one of the house rules was that you must bank either the 8 ball or the cue ball and zero slop was allowed. This was to create a level playing field for learning bank shots. Something similar with sidespin might work also.

I think your friend and I have more in common than I'd like to admit, but I think part of the issue for me is that I can always blame bad shots on not knowing some system or technique. The advice you offer is exactly what I needed to hear, thank you!

Yea, systems will only get you so far. They are a great starting point, but to reach that higher level, you really need to develop your feel.

Hey, your points really hit home with me! Great video. I’m 67 and “used to play a lot of pool” when I was younger. I won a lot, but that was bar tables, and a lot of opponents that weren’t that good. My only tools back then were a stop shot that only worked if the object ball was near, follow (clumsy) and how hard I hit. We didn’t have KZread back then. Started playing again and assumed my old “skills” would mostly still be there. They weren’t. Had trouble with all kinds of shots. After getting mostly back to my old level, start watching videos and practicing actively. Wow. My new superpowers amazed me. I worked on follow, stop and draw shots…and still am, but then also English. A fantastic point you make, my playing suffered because I wasn’t making shots that were sure shots normally if I didn’t care where the cue ball went after. Specially follow shots I overshot and the cue ball would end up way past where I wanted, etc. I persisted, and then suddenly one day and since it clicked a little. But I LOVE your points about “just shoot them, all the time for a while”. That’s what I’m going to do. I find too, when playing against an opponent I tone it down mostly. I’m not trying for perfect position, unless it seems right. So I see improvement with English and am going to try your drill, seems perfect for aiming with two balls framing where I need to hit. I haven't bought any equipment for filming in a while. I film with a DSLR and a nice lens. A great option for audio is the rode wireless go. I got it for exactly this purpose.

Downloading the app now. What would be amazing for the table maker tool but might be insanely hard to do if at all possible would be if you could build the table select the ball you wanted to make and where you wanted the cue ball to end up and it would suggest how to shoot it.

Having a look at the app. I really like the idea of this. Is there anyway we can access the photos we have created, but from inside the app, and perhaps add some text?

This is exactly what I’ve been working on.. it’s been frustrating. I can pocket the balls and I get a bad/less than ideal leave.. or I play the English and get a great leave but I miss the shot completely or rattle it in the pocket. It’s really annoying when it’s relatively easy routine shots 🙄

Hello! Thank you for providing such a thorough explanation, it was very helpful. However, I still have a question regarding aiming with sidespin. What reference points should I use? Normally, when aiming with no spin, I use the center of the cue ball (or tip) along the cue to the object ball. But if I add right spin, should I still use this line for aiming, or should I use the actual line of the cue? Additionally, should I move the cue in parallel to the right or just the bridge hand, keeping the backhand in position? I would appreciate any insights you have on this matter. Thank you!

Korea is still awesome, but they need to give up on the COVID restrictions. Its a shame more pros from here don't compete internationally. Even the amateur scene is extremely competitive.

This might be a good video topic. Long answer made short, its all about where you want the cue ball to go. Professional play with good commentary is a great place to start getting a better idea of why pros hit the cue ball where and how they do.

Great video lately my english has been rattling the pocket how do you prevent that?

Do you still "aim" with the centerline of the cueball even though your stick is off that line? I normally stand where I would make the shot, then readjust my feet to stand where I'll "miss" to compensate for SIT but when I get down, idk what to look at anymore. My stick is aiming to some nonsensical at that point, I dont have the stick to look down to be like a gun barrel. So I end up trusting that I lined it up right, shoot. Most the time I'm not taking much for a risk, its close to pocket, and works but this is not much a plan.

One said, perfect is simple. Make it nice control, no need side spin

I play 8 ball on a Chinese 8 ball table. The pockets are so tight that if I use any spin I will miss. I only use top and back spin to try to get some cue ball control.

@@tyronegreen8867 Well, your biggest consideration should be how much room you have. You need 5ft on every side of the table, so a 7ft would require a 17'x13.5' area with no obstructions. Only get a bigger table if you have the space. If I was back in the USA, I would definitely be getting a 9ft Diamond with no ball return for my house. Ball returns are noisy for a regular home. I would probably avoid the 7ft Valleys for a home practice table because the pockets are like buckets 🪣. You might be in for a rude awakening if you only play on a valley and then in league or tournament have to play on a Diamond.

I've played them and I'm much better in real life. I say that cuz I would aim them like I would in real life and would miss most of the time. I'm not sure there is much value in them in terms of improving your game unless you are just fiddling around with where the cue ball will go when hitting with different spins.

It’s not a system that I use but it can work for some people. I typically feel out the shot in my pre shot routine and just kind of know how I need to hit it.

I have a question. Look at the spin you manage to get the cue ball. I can never accomplish that. Does the quality of the ball make that possible or am I just not using spin the right way? Sometimes the object ball will spin, but rarely if ever does it look like the cue ball is spinning.

The only time it would come down to the cue ball is if you are playing with a heavier cue ball. A lot of coin operated tables in the US use these. This makes it quite difficult to get a good amount of spin on the ball. If that isn’t the case, then you probably are not hitting far enough away from center. Flirt with miscuing and see how much spin you can get.

I am a beginner player and i have a feelings that the local pool tables we play on are really hard to pot, especially the rail shorts. I don't know if tables are always the same coz i see in videos how professional make it look easy potting a rail ball.

Typically the professional players are playing on much tighter pockets in modern day events. I believe the standard pocket size in Matchroom events is 3 7/8 of an inch. Diamond tables have 4 1/4 inch pockets. If you are playing a small 7ft bar table the pockets are usually much bigger. Hard to know unless you measure them.

I have a great aiming system for this I found something out about the balls

No one ever tells us in what situations side spin helps though? I've tried side spin the odd once or twice and I see it producing nothing that I couldn't produce or at least produce similarly enough with either forward, Backward, Or center ball.

Sounds like a decent video topic. I’ll add it to a list I have. Probably no videos for another month or so as I finish writing the course I am creating. I have a lesson on position play on the app that has a lot of graphics where it shows the extra action you can get with side spin.

me and sidespin just arent getting there. putting in the time but nothing positive is happening. much better off on center axis unless i just absolutely have no choice so far.

You could also pause the video or put the play speed at .75 or something
