Also worth mentioning about Kayvaan Shrike: he has the Phobos keyword, which means any of the Phobos-Only strategems in the vanguard detachment can work on whatever squad he leads and be redeployed with the Phobos captain. Phobos Captain can also redeploy the Invictor warsuit but... do you really want to?

Yes, I redeploy my Invictors all the time. Not only can you throw the opponents deployment out by feinting with an Invictor or two earlier on in placement, but since redeployment is decided after finding out who gets first turn, if need be you can pick them up and move them to a better position and leave the opponent flat footed. More than a few times I've managed to throw my opponents deployment completely out of whack by getting them to drop a couple of heavy weapon squads or tanks down a flank to counter the Invictor(s) placement, only to have one or both redeploy up the other end of the table where there is a weakpoint/far fewer heavier weapons or in a position that is completely out of LOS of their heavier weapon units, allowing them an extra turn or two to move up to melee range.

A couple of errors here, Vanguard Veterans can't take lightning claws anymore, and the ravenstrike battleforce doesn't come with a raven guard upgrade sprew, because the box only comes with phobos marines and the upgrade sprew is for intercessors and gravis marines, it does come with three of the ravenguard specific transfer sheets that you get alongside the upgrade sprew.

Corax, and the Raven Guard have always been one of my favorite primarchs and marine chapters. I've never had a Raven Guard collection, but I've always considered it. This gives me very solid food for thought for a future collection/army. Thank you for the video, it was very well done!

Your videos are the standard to meet and have been since you started mate, great work and thank you.

A buddy of mine is starting out and Raven Guard was his choice. With the current combat patrols none fit what he fully wanted. Space Wolves and Blood Angels did come close but Reavers suck and neither had a Phobos leader. In the end we got Kayvaan Shrike (Of course), A box of Incursers/Infiltrators for 5 of each. Eliminators, Heavy Intercessors, and the Warsuit. Keep in mind I have unit's he can borrow for the time being like Jump pack Intercessors and some other stuff. We were going for stuff I didn't have, on top of unit's he thought looked like they'd work with the detachment.

The Warsuit works amazing up close with the incendium cannon. Dangerous all the way around at 12", devstating melee and a CP for Tank Shock even more so.

@archaoneful Yes, I got the Vanguard box. I built three Eliminators as per the instructions and put the extra arms/weapons on the Reaver bodies. I ended up with nine Eliminators and used the Reaver heads and arms on a 10-man unit of Assault Intercessors with third-party jump packs. Don't use Reavers; they are just bad performers and not worth the points.

Currently painting some Raven Gaurd and they appear on AT channel. Nice. I use phobos, vanguard vets, and inceptors, backed up by Bio apothecary and blob of eradicators. With storm speeders and warsuits. It's not even close to being optimal but you can still put up some numbers whilst remaining fluffy.

This was super informative, great work. Would love to see a Salamanders video for your next How to Start space marines!

I’ve always wanted a Raven Guard/Alpha Legion army that could be played as either option. Maybe do loyalist marine models but painted as AL not sure. Feel like this is how AL should work!

If you do, put a Vindicare Assassin in your army but use the Heresy model for Exodus as a proxy. He's perfect for it.

I did this in January. Found one of the raven guard Xmas boxes from two years ago (I believe). I know reivers are not great ATM but two invictors a squad of eliminators a phobos librarian and kayvaan was a great start. Followed this with a box of infiltrators (build a five man of incursors and five infiltrators) aggressors and vanguard veterans and now a executioner. And yes a whole army's worth of 3d printed beaky helmets and raven guard shoulder pads. Final purchase to get 2k points is a dark angels combat patrol (got one reserved if GW decides to change it before I can buy the old one). Not a optimised list by any means but thematic (imo) and I cam then slowly get the other things for a more optimised version. New scout kill team is a guaranteed future purchase for example.

I'd love to hear your opinions on different anti tank options, just in general for Space Marines. A lot of the debates about lists I have online typically are about how much anti tank is necessary in specifically a Raven Guard list, although it extends to other space marine lists. I'm a huge fan of playing 6 Eradicators with an Apothecary Biologis in a Land Raider, but theres many other options and upsides and downsides to it all. Gladiator Lance is very strong, but so are ballistus, and thunderstrike isnt bad as well. I'd love to see a Space Marine Anti Tank deep dive.

I played the first game of my fluff army for RG and they had a pretty good showing. I brought a Ballistus Dread and Firestrike turret for some dedicated anti-tank that castles the home objective with Speedbump scouts. The Intercessors led by Jump pack Chaplain managed to wipe out 3 wraithblades with just Hammer of Wrath and the Chaplain's ability, after the Eliminators precision struck the Spiritseer out of the squad.They play Super annoying and VERY passive aggressive. The poor Eldar didn't know where they would pop up next, and he was so scattered and confused. It was a real treat to play, and very Very different from my typical World Eaters Smash build.

I'd love to see you do one of these for each First Founding Chapter. At least the Codex Compliant ones. Because I'd like to know how to expand my Salamanders beyond just getting some transports and more Aggressors.

My Raven Guard army is Ultramarines in Anvil Siege detachment. Untochables with heavy shooting. - Sergeant Telion (Warlord) + 10 Scout Sniper (Missile Launcher) - Captain in Phobos Armour (Fleet Commander) + 10 Scout Sniper (Missile Launcher) - Callidus Assassin - 3x Librarian in Phobos Armour (one with Stoic Defender) + 3x3 Eliminator Squad (Las Fusil) - 3x5 Scout Squad (Sniper, Missile Launcher) - 2x1 Predator Destructor - 3x1 Whirlwind

@@aariuswins they were great before for 145, now they are on the edge for me. But they effectively deal with a lot of stuff. Basically what Desolation Squad should have been from the beginning, not overbuffed new unit that ended up as an over nerfed one. But I would like to have Whirlwind at 165-170.

Kayvan also has the phobos keyword, granting it to his unit a letting them use all the shenanigans of the vanguard spearhead detatchment. My favorite unit is 3 Eliminators + phobos captn + phobos lieutenant + execute and redeploy.

what weapons on the Eliminators?

Just got the Vanguard Task Force and shrike to start my Raven guard army! I did not realize they were monopose models 🤦🏻‍♂️ guess I have to kitbash some las fusils on my eliminators…

The Space Marine combat patrol is particularly good for raven guard lists since it let you give your second character the ghost weave cloak for a lone op with deepstrike.

Instant clicks for Ravenguard :) I'm really enjoying Shrike and jumppack intercessors but my army works better with Firestorm detachment rather than vanguard. So we're the Fire Ravens i guess 😆

Strongly recommend the jump 10 man with shrike. Being able to rapid ingress 12.1 inches away from enemies means no shots on them, and no charges, while nearly a guaranteed change from the squad. Its great fun to use and means you don't watch in dismay as your jumppacks are shot to pieces mid table, which is always the risk normally

I kitbashed Kayvaan Shrike into an Raptor Chapter Leader to play him as a Ravenguard Modell into my second founding chapter. :) Also I wanted to kitbash Calgar soon. So he doesn't look like a big blue chunky son of Ultramar.

@@aariuswins hey, you can play him in any chapter you want. I made him look diffrent and took away some keyfeatures just for the eye. On his datasheet he has the Ravenguard keyword. So you can't play him with other Chapter Masters or with other detachement rules than the ones in the Space Marine Codex. He is a good pick as leader for the Assault Intercessor with Jumppack squad. I'm also kitbashing myself a Marneus Calgar that looks like a Raptor. So I can switch between both Chapter Masters. Since you can only play one. You know what I mean? You play Ravenguard or Ultramarines but in the colours of the Raptors Chapter. :)

The ravenguard is the only space marine chapter that interests me. I don't play 40k but if I ever got the itch again I'd play the sneaky beakys

Ive been building my Raven Guard army for just short of a year now and have a few friendly games under my belt. This video has been amazing for a different view on an army. Ive tried staying heavily Phobos led with the a Storm Raven Gunship as in my mind I can see them more likely calling for fast air support. Over heavy armour support all day long out on their stalks.

Sadly, the current fluff for Ravenguard makes it sound like stealth and claw jump packs is 'Ravenguard'. Actually, they LOVE a bit of long ranged heavy weaponry. An ambush is as much sudden massive firepower on key targets as well as the blade driven deep. In an effort in 10th to make ravenguard sound more different, they now are just 'stealth and claws'

I was so pissed when I found out about that Ravenspire box. Only a couple of months earlier I'd made a huge purchase to replace the army I'd previously lost, and then GW dropped a box with roughly half of what I needed in it, and with the already nice 20% LGS discount on top of the box savings it would have been come out to nearly 40% off RRP in total for those units. That being said, if you can get it that Ravenstrike + the Vanguard Combat patrol box is a damn good combo for Starting a Ravenguard/Phobos army - Skrike, Phobos Libby and Lt, 10 Infiltrators, 10 Reivers, 3 suppressors, 3 Bolt Sniper Eliminators and 3 more Eliminators with options for either, then the two Invictors. Comes to around 1100 points under current costings. Throw in the 40k Starter box with Terminators, Infernus marines and the Terminator captain, and you're pretty damn close to 1500 points.

I bought 1st Horus heresy box because of mk6 and being scaled up I just use them as any primaris. RG are known to be slightly smaller than other chapters

My favourite legion, only followed by the iron hands. Currently debating which of the 2 should I paint my leviathan marines as

it is disappointing that all of the codex compliant chapters in 40k don't have at least one unique unit outside of a character or two. Ravenguard could easily have a unique phobos unit of a 5 man eliminator squad similar to their 30k sniper team. The same applies to the other codex compliant chapters, salamanders with a unique flamer unit similar to the pyroclasts(essentially a Infernus squad with heavy flamers), white scars with a unique mounted unit, Iron hands with unique terminators or centurions that mix both variants into one, and Imperial Fists with shielded infantry. I ignored Ultramarines as they have so many characters and currently in tenth it fells like it is either Ultramarines or non compliant codex chapters for space marines.

Just thinking about starting Raven Guard. Been playing with some lists, then this drops. I guess the Gods have decided this is to be.

Bit of a curveball, but I think the 20 man horus heresy mk6 could go a long way to building a 40k RG force. Coming up with ways to properly represent phobos (incursor heads, backpack and bolter bits, ect) could get you a really unique but still feasible competitive force. Same goes for the mk6 assault squad as an alternative to jump intercessors (plus you get lots of those shields, could use those for character and maybe even bladegaurd)

There are 2 different 10 RG themed head resin “kits” under Horus Heresy in GWs webstore, though I use them sparingly as they’re quite situational

You should also mention apothecaries, because raven guard has a flawed geneseed and they need to deploy a lot of medics in the lore.

I'm enjoying my Death Spectres, a very dumb official successor Chapter.

New player here. What's the difference between Ravens guard and their successor chapter Raptors? Primarily when it pertains to gameplay. (Please not I have not watched the whole video and I am super new to the game and marines)

You really just need 1 model sadly....and Im saying this as a connoisseur who has over 4k pts of the beakies painted. 10th really just stripped chapters of their identities aside from their unique HQ's. The rest is whatever generic marines ya need. Also technically speaking as of right now Vanvets don't actually have lightning claws anymore.

The best way to collect Raven Guard is to buy all the Ultramarine characters, carve off their chapter symbols, and paint them black. :(

GW needs to stop making a bunch of new generic Space Marines and start giving the Codex Chapters some more unique characters. A chapter master, Captain, and 1-2 other characters for each chapter would make them feel distinct enough to be really fun while providing another lever for balance

“One of the most frequently updated armies out there” ? Really? One of? So how much are qw paying you to ignore the facet that space marines always get the most love and attention in 40K? I’m genuinly interested because last I looked space marines always get regular releases and other factions have to be lucky when they maybe get one new model or a new sculpt per codex.

If I'm being completely honest, Primaris was a mistake. They should have just updated the sculpts for what they're calling "firstborn" and called it a day there. Then we wouldn't have 500 units that take time and effort to produce making supply lines tight and people getting pissy because they told us we wouldn't have to build whole new armies only to have the rug pulled out from under us mere months after they gave us plastic contemptors and leviathans. Then they could have spent a whole lot more time and effort on updating the other armies, like how we're still using Dark Eldar models from 3rd edition. They've spread themselves too thin.
