Please do take this as a compliment, you have been very instrumental and important in my hesitation to begin moto-vlogging. I have years of riding footage that I have collected but haven't done anything with any of it. Your transparency and frustrations in dealing with and battling the various algorithms and pressures of constant content creation along with other content creators frustrations have been an important perspective. What advice could you give in dealing with those frustrations and pressures and figuring out the algorithms so that it remains a fun thing to do. It is clearly apparent you put a lot of thought and research into these things in building your channel and the success of that work shows. It just seems though that so many get into content creation to get out of the typical rat race of life and it becomes a monster of a rat race of its own.

Unfortunately, there is no exact answer! I see creators with millions of subscribers, who have the exact same issues as creators who have 1000 subscribers. It’s just that inevitable feeling of putting your heart and soul into something you enjoy for it to not be well reciprocated in the end. KZread has always, and will always be an ebb and flow. The best you can do is just always focus on what brings you happiness and only create when you really want to. Hopefully the bad times go away and new people decide to come along and share the life with you online. That’s all I could ever hope for!

What a great resource, thank you so much for putting it together! My biggest challenge has been recording in-helmet narration/audio and easily syncing it with my footage. I’ve been recording it separately and trying to sync it in post but I think you’ve got the right idea here writing it directly to the GoPro footage. Really appreciate it your insight!

I do have to say, you professional vloggers, got a lot going on. I had a few junk cameras from time to time just recording footage, but those videos were bad. so I never bothered. recently i started up again, not to be a youtube channel, just to record some of my favorite roads and save them for friends and such to watch. And, for me to re-watch over and over when i can not ride. so, i broke down and got a hero 9, then the aluminum helmet bracket , then the mic adaptor, then the silicone case, then paid for some editing software. OMG, but I record daily for security reasons, you know traffic issues and such. it got me into the routine. then just cutting some clips and adding them together. this video helped me to figure out whats what and what to use. so thank you ! there was a lot to research and put together, this video made it clear as day. Take care ! and thanks for the res, im only running at 1080@24 linear. I'm gonna mess around with that 2.7@60 this week.

Great video Jess!! I found this super helpful! Also, I’ve been a video editor for almost 36 years and work at a major TV network.. you’re decision to use Premiere Pro is wise.. it links well with the rest of the adobe suite especially if you are creating motion graphics in After Effects! I’ve been using GoPro cameras since the original GoPro Hero HD and I’ve actually just bought a DJI action 3.. I found I do lose a percentage of footage with GoPros.. but they are still good cameras.. I was also glad to see you are using royalty-free music.. I’ve had several videos audio-blocked due to using commercial music and there’s nothing worse than having to re-edit a video due to KZread stripping all the audio off.. keep up the amazing work and thank you again for this wonderful video!! Also,Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!!

I love this video! I’m kicking around starting a bit of motorcycle vlogging of my own from the angle of a social weirdo Autistic/ADHD rider. This is helpful! The only thing I wish other creators would try, and I see the opportunity here as well, is moving away from auto white balance. I can tell who’s doing it because their content tends to look cold/blue even when they are complaining about the heat. The colors will pop more, good natural contrast range etc if WB is manually set. Just leaving it at something like 6000K when shooting outdoors, day or night, would go a long way.

Hey Jess, love the channel and thanks for putting this video together. I have a small gaming channel (this one) and I think I would like to try moto vlogging. Perhaps with a new channel or revamp this one since I no longer play the game. So, I have my setup, Hero 8 black on the chin with mic adapter and a Purple Panda mic, session 5 on the handlebars, I think I have a really decent start. I'm riding a 05 1200c Sportster. But I guess that's enough of a back story that really has nothing to do with my question, 😁 My question is that after a few test rides, everything looks and sounds great. Vocals are clear with a nice drone from the Sportster in the background and zero wind noise. Overall, I'm pleased, but I noticed that I look around way too much. I don't notice it during the ride, but it's nearly sickening to watch the playback. Literally left to right for the entire video. Watching your videos, you don't seem to have this issue. Is this the way you naturally ride, or is this learned skill? If this is something you had to overcome, do you have any tips for the wanna be vlogger? Thanks and keep up the great work.

I was so pumped about starting a KZread channel. Watched a lot of videos on motovlog set ups. Including yours. Went out bought all the equipment, set it all up, recorded a few test runs and completely lost all motivation. It is so much work, and it so easy to say forget it and just go for a ride. The whole thing I think is a bit overwhelming to me, that and I hate the sound of my own voice 🤣. So how do you motivate yourself to get out and create a video?

  • @jefffaller8474

Jess, I really appreciate all the information about how you put on your MotoVlogging production, it was very useful. I've been using my GoPro 10 for a year now when I ride, and have it mounted facing forward about where you have your 3rd person view on your your bars. My question is what is the best way you have found to routinely start and stop the camera's? are you using a GoPro remote(s) or are you doing what I do and taking a hand off the bars and tapping the top of the camera? I just watched your latest video on the your red helmet and all I can say is welcome to the NeoTec2 club; once you go modular its hard to go back, just remember to push the integrated dark visor back up before you go into a tunnel...yikes.

I think you are the first person I have ever heard mention Tube buddy, and this is the first time I have heard of it. I will look into that. I think Go Pro settings are what I struggled with the most when I first started out, and it took a lot of trial and error, and skimming through everyone else's settings. I have a great helmet rig, though still trying to work through some winter wind noise because I add a wind screen during the winter (sportster bro here). Its not horrible, just not as good as I am used to. I think my biggest struggle is I work full time, AND have a part time job, so finding time to record is hard, especially now that daylight savings has ended, and the sun has already set when I get off work. 250 ish subs in 2 months is a good start I think, I just have to keep working at it. I don't know what the average channel growth is, but I imagine persistence is the key. If you have any other suggestions towards growth, I would appreciate it. I have ideas, just not enough time. Lol

I think a good rule of thumb for growth is to publish consistently and keep the topics relevant. Publishing consistently is a free meal ticket for viewers. Great advice! Starting a channel was one of the best things I've ever done. It's unlocked so many amazing experiences so far in just a short time. I highly recommend it to anyone thinking about it. You don't need anything fancy. The gear doesn't matter too much if you're fun or interesting to watch or listen to. Except a microphone. Audio is surprisingly more important that video when it comes to keeping retention. Jess not sure if I told you but You, Blockhead and Shadetree made me want to try this. So damn fun! I do well capturing video, riding and managing the cameras all at once…forget trying to decide what to say while riding. There is no vlogging while riding here. I use Insta360 onex2 (a large editing learning curve but well worth it) and a GoPro Hero9. I admire those of you who can vlog while riding. My style is to just voice over in editing.

Thank you for all this info! I am planning on getting my vids going in the spring so when I head to Sturgis 2023 for my first time I hope to create some descent vids. Question about your computer. What computer and specs of it do you use? When I did my first 3 videos (that are on my channel for you to go watch (Shameless plug, LOL) I found that my photo editing computer isn't good enough to edit video. It works fine for professional still photog but won't render video and the transitions worth a darn. Thanks in advance.

The main reason I upgraded is because i share my videos early with my patrons and youtube members. Tube buddy allows me to schedule my video to publish in advance while still allowing me to share it with my members. (KZread allows you to schedule videos in advance, but won’t let you preview that video with others until it posts publicly)

Great information, my problem is I have a very "chill personality" which imo people would find very boring and not watch and two I don't have the balls to be doing wheelies and 150mph pulls on the Highway which is the type of content I LOVE and it seems to get the most views honestly!!!

Yeah I've been wondering what kind of travel gear you use? I have an '04 Road King and only have the stock bags on it and they aren't secure or very big. I do have the driver back rest, sissy bar and luggage rack, so I have space for larger bags, I just haven't started looking yet. I recently bought the bike and it is my first long distance capable bike, so needless to say I've been spending a lot of money in the shop either making repairs or doing some comfort upgrades. I have to give the previous owner credit for keeping it looking right, but they were a bit behind on maintenance or wear items, and I would love to know what the hell they used for a gps because I can't find anything to fit the wiring or the larger ball ram mount. Sadly it was all supposed to be removed on my last service (hydraulic cam chain tensioner) and bar (12") upgrade, but they reinstalled all of it GRRR! I've probably spent just about as much on service as I did the bike itself but I love it and don't really care that much but I'm running out of money. Last thing is a good yet inexpensive full face helmet. I'm heat intolerant and mine just doesn't ventilate well enough for long duration trips. I'd love to email you and discuss all this at some point and hope to see you and the hubby out on the road some time.

Jess, I've been with you since you had 2k subs or so. You've grown so much and I enjoy watching it all. I've been considering trying to film some for several years but I really don't enjoy computers so I've held off. I honestly dread the editing process! 😩 However, I think it would grow on me if I ever could watch some of our riding footage. We've never been able to see ourselves riding and enjoying the sights. We both wear half helmets so I'm guessing there's no way to even record any audio is there? Would you have to just narrate those types of video in the editing process? I've tried to wear a full faced helmet but my neck is messed up due to fracturing it, in a horse buck-off. The pain and headaches I get will never allow me to tolerate the weight of even the lightest full faced helmet.

A lot more information than your first how to motovlog video. My question is do you think it's hard to even get to close to where you are if starting out in 2022/2023? And do you think your gender has given you an advantage? I mean there's tons of male content creators out there but no one has blown up as quickly as you have. Having met you in person a few times (hope your hat fits 😂) I personally believe it's because of your authenticity, personality, openness, and your genuineness. Stay warm up there!

Thanks for the great info! I like DaVinci Resolve for editing. I really want to get the 360 camera - I used to enjoy making panos the old school way with a fisheye lens, rotator and a stitching program - the 360 camera seems so much easier! And here's my question finally, Do you use the camera on the 50c communicator?

Thank you so much for all the information provided. I been considering beginning a youtube motorcycle blog myself but had no idea how to begin. Can i begin with just a 360 camera ? Or im I probably better off with both a 360 camera and a helmet camera? Also will using two cameras make editing more difficult especially for a beginner? Once again thank you.

Hey Jess! Here's a question for you: with the equipment/post-production and experience you have now, what would you do different if you started it all today? Once more, in the coming future, what newer/better/what have you, equipment you'd like to use or try? Is this something you research often? I mean you're a full-timer and all, lol.

Super useful, thank you! The one thing I keep struggling with is audio quality out of the helmet. I have three different lav mics, tried all with deadcats and foam, tried plugging them into the gopro 7 black media mod, AND tried them with a zoom field recorder, and pretty much no matter what I do, above 40mph or so the wind noise becomes so loud that the audio starts clipping and popping and ends up being unusable. I also tried it with the mic being right in front of my mouth, with the mic being to the side, but not under the cheekpad, with the mic being under the cheekpad, to no avail. Therefore no videos yet :/ How did you figure out what setup would work for you? Did you run into this / similar problem?

Great video! I just bought an Akaso Brave 7LE and purchased the USB mic as well. It comes with a 4' long cable. Right now, I just have it bunched up and affixed to the inside chin portion of my helmet (HJC RS3). Is there a better way to route the cable for a cleaner look? BTW, my mouth does not hit the cable. Thanks!!
