How to Start a Business in 2024 (A Step-by-Step Guide)

Do you dream of starting your own business but aren’t sure how-or even the best business to start? In this interview, Mike Andes outlines his step-by-step guide for how to open a business, from the point of view of someone who’s both done it himself and mentored others through the process.
Mike started his first landscaping company when he was just 12 years old, and entered an MBA program at 13. Today, his Augusta Lawn Care is a multi-million dollar business. Mike uses his Landscape Business Course and the Business Bootcamp Podcast to share his knowledge about starting a business with other aspiring entrepreneurs, and he’s talking with us today to do the same.
Mike started his first business from scratch with almost no financial resources. We’ll ask him how to start a business with no money, and which types of businesses have the lowest initial costs to open. Along the way, he’ll talk us through how to start a company, from choosing a niche and business structure to evaluating your success and adjusting your strategy after you open.
Along with his advice on how to start a small business, Mike will share his insights on the main mistakes that lead new businesses to fail and how much work you should expect to put in as a small business owner. He’ll also give tips on promoting a new business and which forms of marketing give you the best bang for your buck.

"What am I good at, What do I love to do, and what can I get paid for" is actually a Japanese concept called IKIGAI. So good to see Mike using IKIGAI for his businesses.

@@UpFlip Well i mean like things your clients don't really need. They want it but it is not necessary. To give another example, making custom aftermarket bumpers for cars or like a woodworking business where you make things on request. It's not a problem you want to solve there. The service you offer isn't a 'need' for the customer, it's a 'want' kinda thing

Wow is this guy is a salesman or what - got to give it to him that he can convince people to buy into his system. He sits back and collects revenue from offering a course and collecting fat franchise fees while not having any actual liabilities for the lawn care as that would fall under the "business owners". The franchisees get to carry the burden of liability being that it is their "company", they get to take on the startup costs, the lead gen, marketing, actual work etc. This guy gets free marketing every time someone calls because they all filter into his call center first and the first thing people will probably hear is this guys business name before the "business owners name". In the clients eyes this will make it seem like the guy who was doing all the work is just a employee for the company and it takes away any relationship building with the client. CRM's can be had for free online (hell, just use excel) so no need for this database service - just another means of losing control over customer data because now the lead gen list belongs to this company. If the business owner goes belly up - well this dudes business doesn't care - it has a free list it can sell to another prospective franchisee. Smart to say the least so I will give him that but I wouldn't want him near my trees just based on what he said at the start. Taking off 3-4 feet off those cedars = a very soon to be dead or dying trees. Lawn care is a fairly easy and low barrier to entry business to get into ( easy money if you can get a few strata contracts.) and you don't need to pay franchise fees to get started. Just make sure to learn along the way because you can easily kill trees, hedges, wind breaks if you don't know how to prune them properly.
