Some extra tips for those who start their first bujo. 1. Take in the consideration what size notebook and with which cover you need, it can be really important. My example: I first started with a cheap A4 dotted notebook, they just were everywhere. And even though the system itself worked for me, I rarely used it. It was thin (80 pages) with a relatively thin cover so it was super uncomfortable to use it without a table (subway, train, any quick notes taking situation). It was also uncomfortable to use it in college cause we have pretty narrow desks there and it was impossible to fit in a laptop, books and bujo so I can easily use them all during classes. And obviously it didn't fit into every bag. So I just ended starting a new notebook with stronger cover, 105 sheets and A5 size. 2. It's almost okay to drop current notebook and start a brand new one without having finished the first yet if there are some reasons. Especially if the previous one didn't worked for you. Please don't feel any guilt for doing this. You can always use that paper as palette or for some other needs or just recycle it. 3. Even though dotted notebooks are the most used in bujo community and dots can be helpful you may need blank notebook or lined or with squares. A5 or B5 sizes are also not a must have. It all just depends on your needs. 4. It's okay not to use all the key characters. Or even all of them and create your own key which suits you best. Or even don't use any characters at all. (Ex. I use rolling weekly so I don't need all those migration characters and I list appointments in my daily logs without any bullet just by starting with a time like that "mon, 1 10.00 dentist 13.00-14.30 criminal law class (essay)". So I actually don't use that key but the system is still there for me and so it may be for you too). 5. (Not that important) Old postcards or carton covers of your school notebooks (if they had some pictures and were not just some solid colour) can be super nice for decoration and you can try them before buying any washi tape and/or stickers.

Great points! I wanted to add to point 1 that sometimes starting with a smaller notebook can also be less daunting. My first bullet journal was a tiny A6 dotted notebook that I could carry almost anywhere! And it felt a lot easier to fill up. :) As I got used to setting up spreads, I realised I needed extra space so my second (current) bujo is a B6 Archer and Olive journal.

I've also been bullet journaling for years, but this is the best video introducing bullet journaling that I've ever seen. Everyone should watch this before starting. Especially the emphasis on it being personal and unique and that you really don't have to make it any special kind of way, and bringing up the fact that you will make mistakes and it's totally fine. I think some people get put off trying the system because they feel a lot of pressure coming with it when the best part of the system is that it's so flexible, it doesn't have to put any pressure on you at all.

“If you never try you’ll never grow” this couldn’t be more true. I’m one of those people who is afraid to start because I’m afraid of messing up. Also, I have so many ideas swirling around in my head but I don’t have the artistic ability to put them down on paper. I tend to get discouraged before I’ve even started. I think your point of trying things to allow yourself growth is a lesson I need to apply in many areas of my life. This next stage of my life IS all about growth, so maybe I’ll just have to include that mantra in my journal. ❤️ I absolutely love your videos, and YOU. Sometimes I play your videos just to have your voice in the background because I find that listening to you tends to calm my nerves, and it puts me at ease... so thank you , more than I can ever express 🙏🏻

For all my fellow perfectionists out there who don't really use the more artistic supplies like brush pens, etc, try Frixion pens. They make black pens and coloured pens, which are similar to gel pens, as well as coloured markers and highlighters. They have great colour and write really well, but the main thing is they're erasable. My perfectionism can sometimes be limiting, but these pens really changed the game for me - in studying, in writing, and in bullet journalling. I highly recommend.

The difference between your early bujo and your recent bujo is astounding😳. I’m so glad that you were willing to show them both because it A: shows your growth and progression, and I love to see other peoples journey. B: it shows us that our journals don’t need to be aesthetically perfect, which we sometimes forget when we see all those awesome bujo video’s. And last, but most certainly not least, C: it also shows us that popular bujo youtubers also started out as beginners once and may not always have been as perfect as we always picture them to be and that gives us hope that practise indeed makes (at least a LITTLE more) perfect. Thank you for all that you do for this bullet journal community, I ❤️ your video’s!

Another kind of obvious tip but not really for me is that you don't have to set your whole month in one go. If there's a particular spread that you don't know how to do at the moment (for me the monthly layout) just skip it and give it another thought, we are so used to see people doing their monthly's in one go because of youtube, but there's no need in reality. Also, you may not have two hours to set your BuJo, but maybe just twenty minutes, then set your month during a week, is fine.

I started religiously using a bullet journal in 2018, but stopped March this year in favor of a ring bound planner. Creating spreads and making them cute/pretty was therapeutic for me but started taking too much of my time. But now because of a prolonged lockdown in my country, I’m thinking of going back to bullet journaling (i miss it as a creative outlet, and it would be so interesting to see my life at the end of 2020 captured in one notebook) so I’m happy you uploaded this, as a reminder to go back to basics first. I got interested in bullet journalling late last year. I work and study full time, so I decided to start off easy using AmandaRachLee's pre-made bujo/planner. It's been amazing so far, and I intend to switch to doing my own from scratch at the beginning of next year.

Since I'm just a newbie and my penmanship is not that good but I'm also practicing at the same time. The thing you said to start simple and don't buy too much it's also relatable and helpful. Thank you!

Love the kindness and compassion in this video! I've wanted to try bullet journaling for years, but I didn't want to switch from my current system of annual planning (which works so well for me). I ended up starting a bullet journal on June 1st as a companion to The Artist's Way (a 12-week course to rediscover your creativity) - it was very time consuming but I had so much fun with it. I still didn't want to commit to a bullet journal for annual planning so I've been using the rest of my journal for various lists and most recently full moon / new moon planning. I started with the Oct 1st full moon and plan to continue for the rest of the year. Sooo my BuJo has become a bit of a mishmash but I love it and refer to it often. :)

Found you today. I am four months into my first Bullet Journal. Bought a spiral binder of dotted papers (had a ruler/stencil) at a major variety store, two nice black ink pens, a pad of stickers and four rolls of washi tape. Read the book about Bullet Journaling, watched some videos and saved some Pinterest articles. It is changing my life! Thank you for your reassurances about making this journal my own. At first, I worried about how to start. Then, I just jumped in and started. Even in four months, things are changing. And I am beginning an outline for a new journal beginning in 2021. For now, my first journal will be six months, and a primer for what can be. But what has transpired has proven that this is a tool that can be magic when respected and used. Thanks for your video. I will be looking at more from you. Still learning! PS the washi tape is still foreign. I use the stickers to brighten the pages, but will likely not buy more. I did add some color pens which brighten it up, and still looking for new ideas.

I set up my first Bullet Journal in January of 2021 but I didn’t really use it at all until August. That’s when I actually started to use it and decided not to make it a huge but instead a simple and approachable set up with some artistic drawings but nothing super elaborate. So, far I’m enjoying what I’m doing and I’m happy that I took my time to think over what I wanted to incorporate on my journal. I love seeing your monthly spreads and loved the advice you give people on this video. 💖

I have used store bought planners for years, but it always ends up in chaos because I still also have to keep millions of scattered lists that inevitably get lost. This is an amazingly helpful video! I just want to say that I am so grateful for all the emphasis on not comparing your first bullet journal to the ones you see on the internet-I actually really really needed to hear that. I’ve been bullet journaling since about the start of the pandemic and I’ve been using it as a way to plan and get creative, but I’ve always gotten frustrated that my spreads weren’t as beautiful or aesthetically pleasing as the pictures on Pinterest that I always sort of aspired to be like. I’m slowly beginning to realize that it’s probably okay if my journal is messy or unorganized in some parts because I’m still new and experimenting with the system. So thank you Plant Based Bride! You have earned a subscriber :D

Over the years I have flip-flopped between bullet journaling and using an established planner, I wish I had found your channel (and this video) when I was in college trying to figure it out! but I started bullet journaling at the beginning of June and it has really been working for me as of late. I really struggled with weekly/daily organization before finding out about the rolling weekly spread and that really worked for me, so thank you for introducing me to it! :) I use the Habit tracker journal from James Clear and BaronFig and that really helped me organize/prioritize what I want to use my bujo for because it has a few guides/toolkits on ways to organize your stuff! One thing I would say is don't be afraid to add spreads on the next available page instead of finding the perfect place for it! you have an index for a reason to keep track of where the spread is! (this is something that I have to keep reminding myself because I make a lot of random lists)

I’ve just started looking into Bullet Journaling. I’m quite a creative person that’s recently gone through a lot of stress and my life is just chaotic. Everything has become so disorganised and as someone that needs routine, it’s been a nightmare. I went into my local home crafts store and they had a bullet journal kit on clearance. Very basic with a ruler, pen, stickers and a how to guide. A small journal came with it too. I’ve seen others do them and always wanted to try it. I love planners but they never have what I want in them, not quite enough anyway so I figured, why not make my own ☺️. I think it’s going to help with my art block and the stress and chaos and get me out of a slump personally. I’ve sadly let myself waste away and don’t do anything I enjoy anymore. I stumbled upon your KZread’s and your designs and spreads are so amazing, simple and easy to understand, it’s invigorating. I’ve just subscribed and looking forward to starting my first journal ☺️

I have begun my first bullet journal and have accepted that certain all year spreads will not start at the beginning of the Bujo, but rather spread throughout as I play with what works and what doesn't. I also hope that this will help me keep track of all of the things that I wish to keep track of as all of the information is spread, EVERYWHERE through my room. So I'm glad that I found this video and hope to incorporate the information into my Bujo moving forwards..

I've been using a BuJo since September 2014 (pretty easy to find out about that, given you do a journal) and I stumbled over your channel a while back, watching your rolling weekly vids. Tried it out in April and loved it so much I've been using it ever since. For me, who has a list for the week, but doesn't really need to assign tasks to a specific day, it's ideal. Every morning I check my rolling weekly, then I decide which tasks to tackle on that day. I used the simple variety from the Bullet Journal website until October last year, then fell into the rabbit hole of bullet journalling at YT and changed things. Of course, I could do the basic principles blind by then, so it was very easy to expand on what I did with the journal, adding trackers (specifically for the words written daily, as I'm a writer - I always tracked them, but a visual tracker as I have it now motivates me more than a few numbers on the pages) and doing more with the calendar. The great thing for me is how flexible a BuJo is - it can be adjusted for every new situation in your life.
