Can I water pop the pine instead of wood conditioner?

I used that exact same stain on that exact same type of pine and it basically looked like gray paint. What am I doing differently?

If im building furniture should I stain all the pieces separate or put it together and stain what I can reach?

Good question. Depends what it is. Usually I try to stain before so that everything is covered no matter the angle, but I’ve done it both ways!
