Whenever I need to feel like my dad is teaching me something I come to Jim Heavey. It's the little smile just before camera change that sells it. Keep being awesome!

I have experimented with shellac in clear epoxies. They work pretty good. I'm not done experimenting with the shellac in the epoxy but it looks promising. I don't use 15 minute epoxy; I use overnight epoxies with shellac and / or seedlac. When l was younger, thirty years younger, I used to use bar-top rubbing varnish. It was made with phenolic and some alkyd resins.

Jim, this is the best overview of staining and dyeing I've ever seen. Bravo! Have you ever used shellac to pre-condition a piece in preparation for staining, and if so, what were your thoughts? Again, excellent precis on staining and dyeing.

You missed my personal favorite, wipe on semigloss polyurethane for the first few coats it is absorbed into the wood like Danish oil and provides a soft finish with a much greater level of protection and nearly "stupid proof" when applying.

Hi, Can i apply varnish without staining? Is there another benefit besides coloring that stain adds & varnish won't? Thanks a lot for you're wonderful videos

Have you folks at Wood Magazine or others here ever used any product made by Vermont Natural Coatings? I've been trying these here and there with good results, and I'd like to get a sense of what more advanced woodworkers think.

If you're using an oil-based stain on a wood that blotches that you can saturate the board with mineral spirits and you will get a very similar result as if you spent money on a pre-stain conditioner. It works very well and can save you a few bucks.

@@tamiboelter5491 Apply spirts first . Let pre-stain sit for 5-10 minutes, then wipe off.
