    You enjoyed replacing points and condensers at 10k-12k miles and resetting them even more often? Spark wires and plugs at similar intervals? And ignition systems that might Fritz out in the rain? Nah... Coil packs nowadays are hugely more efficient (no wasted spark, no high tension wire to bridge, no approximated spark curves via mechanical advance mechanisms) and easily last 100k, with no maintenance over their lifetime. Spark plugs easily get 50k, or more with iridium plugs. The old days can stay in the past.

    @@MrAmorti Too young too have actually work when those ignition systems where a common thing. But I learned it through a vehicle my father had. I know how to work on the current ignition system too. And to a great extent nowadays it is easier with better diagnostic tools. But if I have a miss I could always grab a test light and hook it up to ground and stab each plug until I hear no difference in RPMS and I know which cylinders are dead. Idk I guess I’m more in favor of older vehicles and how they operated. Now I need a 4K scanner from Snap on to tell me, “hey buddy your #4 spark plug isn’t firing”.

    @@fullmetaljacket7 sometimes is not that simple. Some misfires are caused by a bad injector that requieres more extensive testing with expensive scanners. • @redtra236

    @redtra236

    5 жыл бұрын

    Well he also noted that it's illegal in some places and you can somehow lose control. Not sure why because last time I checked going into neutral doesn't deactivate the brake pedal. And as far as it being illegal it would be about the easiest thing possible to beat in court because there's literally no way to prove you were in neutral unless you admit guilt. It is very bad to do on automatic transmissions though. This also applies to pulling them in neutral.

    @@redtra236 Supposedly, the law was set in place in the 1930s or 1940s; before disc brakes even showed up on racecars in America, let alone being optional to order and long before they were standard. Only having drum brakes and relying on them instead of also relying on the transmission to help slow the car down = brake fade is a possibility. If there's water in all of the drums, that won't help either.

    There was a lot of contradictions throughout that film. As a truck driver my employer specifies a minimum 10% coasting time on trips where possible. Yep, in neutral rolling along. Started doing this in my car and I've saved a fair bit I actually get an extra trip to work every week now.

  • @markkukowski3710

    @markkukowski3710

    Not true, actually: In neutral, your engine is idling which requires a rich fuel mixture. With today's modern fuel injected cars, if you are decellerating or coasting in gear, the computer almost shuts off fuel, which also causes an air pumping effect in the engine and actually helps you slow down. Cruising speed at light throttle is where you get the best fuel mileage. And, yes - your car is not as stable on a coast because all the wheels are free and not being controlled. Try taking a corner by coasting. Then try applying light throttle around the corner. You can control the car much better with power input and actually take the corner easier.

    I definitely agree with Mark here, if you have an old school car with a carburator, you will save a ton of gas by putting the car in neutral and by letting it ride but you will actually use more fuel in neutral with fuel injection. You can check this by putting the computer to display the instanteneous fuel economy. You may observe that the numbers are different if you coast in neutral or if you let the car coast in gear. Al least, from my observation driving a european car with a manual.

    Now if only people knew how to take care of their cars today. I'm telling you, simple things like changing your oil and oil filter every 3000 miles, or 3 months, will make your engine go a long way. Making sure your tires are properly aired once a week is a good thing as well, you don't want to be driving on deflated tires. I would also recommend buying a cheap OBD II scanner for roughly $20 USD. If you have a check engine light, that OBD II scanner comes in real handy when trying to find the problem, because it will tell you what the problem is.

    Changing your oil constantly can also bring it's own consequences. I'm a Honda service technician, and I can tell you that even the most diligent of car owners don't take their cars in for an oil change that frequently, as used to be the case back then. They would take their cars in for an oil change every 6,000 to 9,000 miles, even though modern synthetic oils can last more than twice as long.
