I inherited my grandfather's framing square and after using it for about a decade, I tested it and learned it was out of square. I used a punch and was convinced I did something wrong when it required 4 or 5 punches to bring it back to square. Your video was very reassuring that I probably didn't do anything wrong. Thank you.

yes. they often take 12+ punches to change. some times you will find old ones that have been adjusted several times over the years with dozens of punches in them.
Yes, I got a bunch of classic squares with riveted wooden beams from the flea market; one was even trash-picked. I filed them and now they are plenty square enough. Thanks for sharing these kinds of information.
I actually have a hand made wooden square for my traditional tool box. I had to re-square it a few times over the years, I always just used a file and some sand-paper.
The old boy at work retired a couple of months ago and apart from a few tools he took home he left a load of his tools behind stating I never want to see them let alone use them again. I nabbed his 300mm engineers square and went to use it today to mark out some metalwork to drill. As soon as I started to mark out I could see it was out. Checking against my own 6inch square revealed it was quite a long way out of square. Explains why his work was on the pi55 and why he never wanted it when he retired
Every of the five machinist squares i inheritaced from my grandfather were out of square. i should really restore them!
What a timely video... I noticed that two of my squares may be sliiiiightly out of square, assuming I can trust my little machinist's square. Which apparently I shouldn't!
I've also found inherited a Square from my grandfather. It's always just been ornamental, but now I can at least attempt to square my Square and put it squarely back to use. Thank you for enabling this.
A great video with some great techniques! Now I can go to my box of old squares that need squaring...
Thanks for “squaring” me away with this. It will help me with one I got from my dad. Great video.
I was just given a couple of antique squares & now I'm going to go find out if they're square or not. Thank you!
I wish you had done this video last year, I chucked a couple of squares as they were not square. At least they were only cheep ones. I do have a starrett one that is not square. At least I know what to do now, thank you.
Thanks much for the file method, a quick project to bring things back on the 90.
My square was unsquare!!!! (Anitque wood brass beautifull mystery brand tri) thanks for not only showing checking but fixing as well. Its now perfect!!
Genius video, so simple but so helpful. And possibly a new level of dad jokes subtly thrown in... 👍
I have a bunch of classic squares with the wood beams brass face and ateel eules. But I found is I need to be careful of those brass faces because they are often worn and uneven. I often have to bring them back to flat before I can check and adjust the actual squareness of the square
I had a project where I needed a new carpenter's square. I was suspicious of the Irwin squares so I purchased two of them. When testing at home, neither were square. So I took them back and exchanged them for 4 Irwin squares and 4 DeWalt squares. I tested them at home...none of them were square. I kept one DeWalt square and returned all of the rest. I gave up trying to find a square carpenter square after the 9th one, so just decided to fix one with a punch. Voila! But you reminded me about dropping them knocking them out of square. I recently dropped my vintage Stanley combo square and forgot all about checking for square. I shall do that tomorrow. Thank you for the reminder!
I've used this method - which I learned from you in a previous video - to great effect on 3 or 4 vintage squares over the years. Thanks!
Yup, I've got a vintage square (brass and rosewood handle) that's out of square. Filing it back true is on my never ending small job list.
Hardest working man in youtube
Thanks James,it had never occurred to me that you could do this but I have now re-squared all of my unsquare squares👍
Yep a quick check is worth it and it doesn't take long😊
Yes, had a few tri squares out of square, just never knew how to bring them back other than the punch method. As you said, they're riveted so, I just never messed with them, got one that was.
Yes I’ve had an un-square square. But gotta admit those Starrets are nice.
I remember your other video on this some time back. I checked mine then but I have since purchased a couple of antique squares at tool meets. I need to check these new to me squares. Crazy question: Have you ever "re-inked" the markings in very old squares or rules? I have some that are very hard to read without a spotlight.
@WoodByWrightHowTo
9 ай бұрын
thanks. no I have not. the only thing in my shop that I use the measurements on is my tape measure and some times my 12" ruler.
I've used the file method before and it works as advertised
You help us so it’s only fair & square
Well, this gives me a base to start from. I picked up an old Stanley 7 1/2 inch square at an antique shop, with rosewood and brass for the bottom part. It is out of whack. I will see what happens. Thanks!
I genuinely appreciate how efficiently you deliver every detail and I retain a great deal from watching your videos, so I just wanted to say thank you!! And, I also appreciate the humor.
Thanks James
I've seen hammering on a rivet of a (not so) square and it did rather ggod 👍
Damn it! Now I have to go and check all my squares 😂
Thanks for another great video.
Just a quick note: using this method we are referencing to the inner part of the ´handle´ not the outer. This is ok for marking wood but not for checking squareness of another square. Yes, the outer squareness can be checked using calipers, and if both sides of the ´handle´ are parallel to each other, it is fine. Otherwise, the handle should be addressed too I guess :-)
@WoodByWrightHowTo
9 ай бұрын
I have never seen one where the post needed to be addressed, but I still check it every time to make sure it is parallel.
Yup! I've used both methods. I don't yet have a method I like for adjustable squares...
@WoodByWrightHowTo

The best way to fix an adjustable square is to throw it in the trash. LOL sorry I had to. They're always to fix them but they are so prone to going out of squares it I usually find them not worth it.
Thanks. I have my grandfather's builder's square that is slightly out of square, so now I know how to fix it.
I've never even considered this could happen. I feel dumb because it's so obvious lol. Thank you.
The only squares that were square out of the box for me were a couple of engineer squares and a drafting t-square. Not even a Starrett sliding t-square came perfectly square.
Really interesting indeed! Thanks a bunch for all the tips, James!!! 😃 Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Cheapo Harbor Freight speed square. I got some iGauge squares and they were amazing. Tested them as soon as I got them, verified they were in fact square and then checked my speed square. Shocker, it wasn't square! Hit it on the lapping plate and now it's nice. Also got a marking gauge from Harbor Freight as I was informed that they are mostly (keyword there being mostly) decent. I seemed to have grabbed the garbage one. Guy just sits on my shelf unused and it makes me sad.
I have my grandfather's machinist's square. It's got an unusual design - Two sides are kind of joined together with a bridal joint. I made it square by just hitting it lightly with a hammer.
Thanks, well done! 👍🏼
Love this, thanks! I have a square with loose rivets. Any suggestions? The handle is wood and I'm pretty sure my students dropped the tools and broke the rivets.
I have an older square that I'm suspicious of, it's good to know I can attempt to fix it. Thanks
Me vibing to the beat at 4:30
Thanks for sharing.
I’ll be checking my square! I had no idea that an out of square square could be squared…
I thunk any measuring device (Starratt or the cheapest) can be out either of square or measurement, if someone, either in the factory or store does something to the tool it's going to end-up 'out' I have purchased a steel rule that was out and when I took a close look, it had been dropped on its end and the end had mushroomed slightly (couldn't see or feel the mushrooming) worked it out by using callipers to see what the problem was.
Very clever.
Thanks for sharing. How would you approach squaring a try square?
One thing that irks me more than a non-square square is a curved straight edge.
I didn't know that it was possible to correct a one-piece square. Sounds like it might be possible to fix Grandpa's old framing square.
Love this vid!!!!!! Thank you!!!!!!
Thanks for sharing that!
It's hip to be square 🎶
Thanks James. For some odd reason I kept hearing Huey Lewis and the New's Hip to be Square....
👍 I thought that I should just buy a new one when a square wasn't square anymore 😅
Great ideas to file or punch easy to do at home
It occurs to me that I could use my shooting board to check it is square, rather than marking a board. I know what is like to have a square that is untrue. Absolutely heartbreaking. It ran off with a younger man...
Wow, who would have thought that a square (tool) would or could be out of square? (could a square, person, be out of square?) The one you fixed said Stanley on it, not the most highly accurate tools around, except for planes. I'm sure a Starrett would be much more accurate. Then again, just how accurate do you have to be working with hand tools on wood? I know, out of square corner joints have to be accurate. Your methods to fix the problem would never occurred to me, once again I've learned a neat trick from Mr. Wright. ;-)
That was green. I had no idea what to do now i do😂. How did you learn this
Nice.
Nice!
Yes sir
Thanks. Helpful. Any recommendations for a speed square?
@WoodByWrightHowTo

I truly don't use speed squares and woodworking. I find those more of a carpentry tool. I use them a lot when I did roofing and framing. I know a few people who like them for woodworking but they're a bit thick for accurate marks.
All hail the mighty algorithm
Down below!
But how do we know your EYE is accurate? And as to how to fix them, just remember both surfaces need to be at Wright angles to each other. Oh, and where do I work? Starretts in Athol.
Wish you had mentioned that this is not the method for combination squares, which use a different method to re-square them. Some of your viewers might try this method on a combo square and mess it up.
@WoodByWrightHowTo

Yeah I should mention that. The best method for restoring a combination squares to throw it in the trash. LOL sorry I couldn't resist.
If even Starrett is falliable than we should all think hard before buying the highest-end tool. The price might not actually be buying us anything.
Nice
Combination squares are also v bad unless you buy something like Moore and Wright, but they cost £200 / $240, I use combi sqs a lot so have to file them true, how do you sort them James, or dont you and why not?
Can you address fixing the combination square.

Well, there are 2 Starrett and 1 Mitutoyo combination squares in the trash because you told to... then I sat down for a mug of coffee in one of your mugs. Haha
I am most definitely nearer round than square, well rotund really. LOL. I have only had to square up a carpenters square and a combination square so far, so I am doing very well on average.
Great video! I have a big framing square I'm pretty sure is out of square, so I might have to try the punch method to fix it. Do you have any advice for squaring a combination square? My best idea would be filing one of the two nubs inside where the ruler gets secured to the cast iron, but I have no idea if that's the (W)right approach.
@WoodByWrightHowTo
9 ай бұрын
For a combination square, the best advice is to throw it away and get a useful square. LOL sorry, I could not resist. It is a running gag on the channel. yes, that is how you adjust them with a nedle file. but they come out of square so easily. you have to check them regularly.
my 15cm starrett was out of square by a bit more than a mm a few months ago, the 45deg was fine but not the 90deg bought it new two years ago, it's the forged steel version not the cast one took two hours to correct using coarse sandpaper on the stock, I'm not sure if it wore down from use or if it was a factory defect now, i check it more regularly
@WoodByWrightHowTo

just normal use can do that. If you are marking on one side more then the other it applies a forest. not much but over time it will change things.
Gee Thanks, now I have something else I need to check. LOL
James if we aren't square are we acute or obtuse?
Have a small Millers Falls wood brass steel (out of square) square I bought new 40 years ago and never used because …. It’s not square.
I’m just here for the puns. 😂
Pffft, I wish I had the talent to where having a square-square would make a difference lol 😉. Seriously tho, thank you for this tip. I’m not sure I’ll ever square my squares but I’ll sound really smart when I show a buddy. Who am I kidding, I need to go check my squares.

What's your opinion on wooden and metal tri squares I know a lot of people will say the wooden one might move out of square but people have been using them for years. I myself use a combination square but I'd like to move from that to a more solid tool

If it's a combination square the best thing you can do is hit is through in the trash. LOL couldn't resist. But no honesty if it's bent I wouldn't want to mess with trying to fix that. You can't really shape the beam to fix it and every time you bend it you're just going to change it a little more.

Never been a combination square. You actually have to adjust the inside of the groove that the ruler rides on. Usually done with a needle file. But in my experience the best way to fix a combination squares to throw it away. They are a pain all around. There's a reason I don't have any in my shop. And they go out of square so easily.
I once had a square that was untrue. The divorce was painful.
Any tips for tuning up a combination square?

Yes. Sword in the trash LOL sorry I had to it's a running gag on the channel. You can square it up by filing the small pads inside of the main body. You have to use a needle file. But they go out of square so easily that generally a time before it's not worth it.
