I have been a server for over 5 years now and I can confirm this happens, more than it should. The worst experience was one time when someone told me off because their food was completely inedible, so I went to talk to boss to let them know there was a complaint with the food. When I got back they started screaming at me because I hadn't asked if they wanted boxes (as well as throwing horrible insults at me), in front of other paying customers. In the end they got their meal free, took home their leftovers, and my other customers gave me really good tips.

The “nobody has ever done my hair how I want it” thing makes me nervous but it’s also a challenge so I do my best to give them what they want. It doesn’t always work out but like 6 months ago I did get a client like that who LOVED her hair after I did it and now always prebooks and gives me a big hug and says “you just get me!” every time. Sometimes red flag clients turn out to be clients that really just haven’t found the right stylist yet. It’s usually not the case but I’m glad I found a good one lol

I did this recently with my new, amazing hairstylist! I truly have had very bad luck in the past, always getting stylists who obviously didn't care, or kept me under the dryer processing for way too long till my hair broke off, and the last time the girl literally didn't even run a brush or comb through my hair once before cutting (how is that even possible lol). .. but then, I found Lauren!! She cared! She brushed, combed, and sectioned! She checked on me and didn't process too long- she was amazing and I will always go back to her forever.

I have similar length hair and the last time I went to a stylist I walked in with my hair down and asked for a trim and they gave a price range of $15-25 or something (the cheap on campus salon), wail looking at my hair. So I assumed that range was for my hair and based on how complex the cut was. All I wanted was the last ~1/2” trimmed off, no shaping no product no nothing, took maybe 15 min. Nope price based on length of hair, so I got charged the max. I get charging more for services that take more time/product, but for the exact same service to have such a wide disparity in price based on something that affects neither time nor materials felt really dishonest.

I agree! I had a middle aged woman do my hair a few times - first time she done it I had what for me was a drastic cut. My hair was down to my bum, I had her cut it to above bra strap length. When she left, my hair looked a mess! The cut was even, yes, but it was so blocky at the ends, because she hadn’t layered it like I had asked at all. I ave anxiety, and don’t want confrontation, so when she asked if I liked it and if I wanted to book another appointment, I said yes...and I ended up having her dye my hair red. I loved it when it was red, until my boyfriend and ?I went to the supermarket and he told me how patchy the back was, like she literally had missed entire strips. We bought some box dye and done it ourselves, and he then messaged her for me to cancel the appointment I had booked again. A colleague of mine at work recommended her hairdresser to me, a young lady only a year or so older than me (I was about 20 when I first went to her)...I messaged her, and I was so nervous about going to her when she quoted me a price of almost half what the other lady had been charging me, but went anyway. While she was doing my hair, I asked her about the prices, and she mentioned because it’s an at home salon, she has very low overheads so she’s able to lower her prices. This lady is AMAZING. I wouldn’t have anyone else touch my hair after finding her. My hair is now back to bum length, I’ve told her she should charge me extra for the extra hair dye in my hair because it’s so long and she won’t. This lady now does my waxes and eyebrows as well haha, but she does such a good job.

She cut inches off and I was completely uneven all around and it just look BAD. I have since had 2 younger stylist cut my hair and my hair is FINALLY back to normal and even. I would go to a you get stylist over an older one especially because of the evolution of hair and someone younger and more fresh out of school I would trust way more.

"There's nothing I can do about your orange hair" bro what, yes there is lmao. If it's a deep orange, they legit just have to schedule you for another bleach session, maybe 2. Then tone it. It's literally just hair science and for cosmetologists, it's basic hair science lol. Girl, I can't believe they did you dirty like that, ugh. But it's best to be ugly orange than fried. I had a perfect hair stylist in NY. When I moved to Boston, I had to go through literally 10 stylists to find the one who could tackle my thick hair. I would always tell each one that I hadn’t found the right person yet and would always telll them that my hair is really thick and ask if they could handle it. They always said yes and then my hair would never look like the photo of MYSELF that I brought in. I remember a stylist telling me once that I was looking for a discount when I told her I wasn’t happy with my hair. She was super rude and when I got up to leave, even her manager agreed that the cut wasn’t right. They ended up giving me credit for another hair cut but I never went back. It was never about the money. I’m willing to pay but give me what I asked for or don’t cut my hair if you can’t do it.

I have to tell you I'm 35 years old and have actually gotten my hair done professionally maybe a handful of times and never liked it not once but the last stylist I want to was very thorough took the time to really listen to me explain my hair type and what was doable and what wasn't. As you said a lot of people don't understand their hair type and think that they can pull off any cut any style and it will look exactly the same on them as it does in a photograph. And in my experience most stylist will not tell you that. I think perhaps they are afraid that if they tell them that you can't do exactly what they want the client will leave without getting any service and then they lost money. But if you end up with an unhappy client who refuses to pay now you haven't only lost money you've also lost time and product. that's why what you should do is when a client comes in and they do have something that cannot be done you show them things that you think are similar that could be done to their hair or styles you think are better suited for them. That's what this stylist did and I left happy and even took the time to write her a good review.

Agreed! But clients have to be open to that feedback. Sometimes they just refuse to understand and won't even consider other options because it isn't exactly the same as the photo they brought in. I'm glad you listened to the stylist's recommendations and trusted her professional opinion!

@@styledbysamvay def I dont know how someone cant get it like when you were explaining the color wheel and she couldnt understand that people have an undertone that was crazy. That's why there called crazy clients normal people would get that. If you warn them and they still insist on doing whatever they're asking for I'd just add in as I said this is not going to look the same as the photo in your hair so I'll do the service but if you dont like it after I'm done no refund. Now you have covered yourself and if they hear no refund than maybe they'll reconsider.

I am the client who can’t ever find a stylist I wanna stay with. I have cosmetologists in my family who practiced on me in beauty school, I’ve paid hundreds of dollars to get my hair done and I’ve also gotten really cheap color done. I’ve done it all lol. But honestly, I have to be the proactive client because I have soooo much hair and it’s a dark brown and I like blonde so I like highlights. Stylists will be like send me a picture, and I always have to say no you need to see my hair in person because it’s deceivingly thick. One girl said it would take 3 hours, I was there for almost 8. I’ve had someone spend one whole day on my hair and it ends up super brassy or yellow yellow not even yellow blonde. I don’t even expect it to be super light my first time, but something always seems to go wrong with my hair regardless. I think it’s probably just my hair that’s the problem, but no one ever seems to know how to do it 😪 at this point I’ve been growing it out for 3 years because I want virgin hair so I can try it all again and hopefully find the right person this time. #Prayformyhair

There have been a few different styled pixies I've wanted in the past, and my stylist told me my hair was not the right texture. Cool - I fully trust my stylist. She's the professional. Second salon I loved and my stylist did fantastic color on me, but was very hesitant to cut my pixie as short as I like. I stayed with her for over a year before looking again. I finally found a stylist who cuts my pixie perfectly and is a fantastic colorist as well. She’s young, positive and I vibe with her personality which helps so much when communicating what is possible and what isn’t with my hair. Cost is immaterial to me when the stylist is a perfect fit.

Ever since I was a child I have been to countless hairdressers, and at the end I would try to keep a straight face to not to hurt the hairdresser's feelings but I would cry all the way home and probably for weeks after! One of my good friends is a hairdresser and I never went to her even though she told me she was good and I wouldn't be disappointed just because I was so scared of what she would do to my hair! So after being friends with her for 8 years, I decided to ask her to do my hair. That was 5 years ago and ever since I am the happiest, most satisfied customer of hers ever! I actually cried of happiness the first time she did my hair! I think now that my hair must be a problematic one and she is just the best in the world to make great hairstyles for me! After watching this I'm gonna text her now for the millionth of time to thank her for it! ❤️

I worked at a top 100 spa in North America as the assistant director. We offered everything! Even when a client complained THEY were (almost...there were a few exceptions) always compensated SOMEHOW! Most just want you to listen and empathize. Even when they are being ridiculous you gotta put on you’re “work face and voice” and just listen and never come across as confrontational! Because I was the person who popped up to the “I wanna speak to a manager” person....I learned a lot! I unfortunately am no longer able to work because I’m disabled. I went to a “high end” salon 1 1/2 yrs ago and I COULD NOT BELIEVE how unprofessional the owner of this salon was....I lost it. Good customer service is clearly a thing of the past!!

I have straight, fine, thick hair, and I have only ever met one stylist that doesn't cut it like it is "thin". When you cut it like it's "thin", you cut SO MUCH HAIR in each layer that it looks like a crappy shag. I cut my hair myself now, and get it shaped about once a year by the same stylist that can actually cut it. I have had it ruined by too many people who are "professionals" who wont' listen when I tell them that fine/thin is not the same as fine/thick.

Lol Spiral perms were THE hairstyle to get in the 80s. I begged for one from my mom who was worried because I had hair to my butt that never had been touched short of trims and one pixie cut when I was younger (asked for that one too at 7 lol). But she agreed and took me in. I assumed I’d lose maybe 4-6 inches of length, but that would still be to my mid back so I was okay with that. She gave me a little orphan Annie, complete globe on my head perm! I cried and washed my hair for days. She cut it all the way to my shoulders before wrapping which I didn’t even realize because I was too busy reading a magazine. Since there were layers being cut, I thought nothing of the front pieces. But I never distrusted other stylists or questioned them because of that experience, just probably made everyone nervous when I’d tell them that story as they were cutting my hair lol

I said "no" and also assured her I had my hair much shorter before. She ended up doing the best haircut I have ever had. Unfortunately, it was in a town I don't live in, and I have not found anyone who can reproduce what she did. A couple girls have gotten close. I am terrible at making appointments, so I don't have a go-to person; I use the walk up places. I now look through the window to see if the stylists I have liked are there and avoid if the ones I didn't like so much are working. Fortunately, my hair grows very fast so even if it turns out bad, it won't take long for mine to grow out. My last haircut was great. I should do better about asking and keeping their names.

  • @alexajackson8227

I can totally get it from both sides. The problem is actually the salons that claim to be professional yet are late to your appointment or make you wait 20 min. Yes hair has gotten ungodly expensive these days and we also live in a world that sets the bar quite high for women especially for women with even slightly ethnic hair. Hair is a luxury that almost caters to celebrity/ elite levels of income. If I’m paying $350 for an all over color and a cut then I expect my stylist to be the upmost of professional. I don’t appreciate a stylist who is short when consulting, has an assumptive attitude immediately when you bring up what to expect price range, and I definitely do not appreciate a stylist who charges based on their level of expertise but then has 2 other people working on you too. Too many times I’ve gone into an elite salon expecting to get what I pay for but then walk out with a dripping wet head or having been made to feel as tho me wanting a thorough consultation is an inconvenience or makes me a potential problematic client. I think the problem resides in people having unrealistic expectations coupled with stylist having big egos, bad communication skills and just not being transparent enough. If we could all take the personal out of it and communicate better, then clients will have a better understanding of what goes into making the prices the way they are and the stylist can understand from the clients point of view why consistent professionalism is one of the most important factors in gaining your clients trust. Compassion from both sides is the only way. Stylist get offended because they take questions personal as if the client is trying to discredit or doubt their ability. But you have to remember, the client is the one who is paying a lot and who is going to be wearing the look whether they like it or not.

Sometimes it’s not going to come out exactly like the picture sometimes your hairs not going to grab to colour like the hair dresser wanted or expected it to. But if you have a good hairdresser they work with that in future. I also can’t stand when people try to haggle with pricing I work in an industry where I charge for a service it’s so offensive to try discredit someone’s work because you can’t afford the quality. When you talk about the pricing, I remembered something that happened to me as a client in a saloon once. I was in highschool, my mother gave me a 20€ bill for a cut in the saloon (here is really cheap), so I went in the saloon, talked to the stylist, and told her right away "I have 20€ here with me, is that enough for a cut?", she answered that yes, it was enough. So, after she washed my head, cut it, blowdried it, I went to pay and she said to me: "it's 25€" and I was shocked, and told her "what? I already told you I only have this 20€ bill, I can't give you more, and you told me it was gonna cost less than that" So in the end she agreed to take my full 20€ bill, and I ended very angry, I never went into that saloon ever again.

And she’s like you know blue and purple would look really cute and I be like girl whatever you want let your creativity run free lol and my hair always turns out amazing. I like to see how creative they are, so it’s always something different

I didn’t realize the whole drastic change could be a potential red flag! I remember how when I was younger, I wouldn’t cut my hair for over 1-2 years so it got super long. When I realized how long it got, I finally went to get it chopped and my stylist kinda panicked asking if I was sure and why such a drastic change. I was so oblivious 😂

Just the other day I had an older lady walk in and she looked me up and down and said, “Wow you look really young, are you EDUCATED?” I said, “Yes ma’am I’m a licensed professional and it’s perfectly legal for me to do your hair.” She was looking around like umm should I do this.... 20 minutes later she was LOVING her haircut and told me “I did amazing for someone so young.” Idk if I should be offended but I’ll take it lol I’m 20 btw but I look 16ish

Hey girrrrrrl 🥰 New subbie here! I absolutely love your channel. I’m a stylist as well! I’ve been debating making videos like this because I feel like alot of my clients or people are like “wow you’re so lucky you get to play with hair all day be your own boss & charge all this money” it makes me so mad 😂 They truly don’t understand everything that goes into it lol. I absolutely loveeeee what I do, but it definitely gets hard! I’m glad I’m not the only one that thinks this way. Same with red flags... I’ve had so many clients like this. Now I’m at a point where I will turn people away, it’s not worth any money for someone to make you feel uncomfortable. I had a girl come in once & wanted to be super blonde, 4 hours later, we did it. It was gorgeous & healthy. A few days later she said she was “too blonde”... Brought her back & made it darker for no charge. She was happy. Then over a month later after she takes a big vacation & returns she texts me saying we weren’t on the same page about her hair & asks for a refund. I was literally shook! & the whole time she was acting like she was a hairstylist herself asking me what “volume” I was using & what brand toner & even what technique, like if I was going to “shadow root” her. Ugh so frustrating. Should’ve turned her away from the start.

I'm one of those clients who never books appointments. I usually go spur of the moment so I will walk in and take whoever is available. Also one thing I had to learn is how to tell the stylist what I actually wanted. A lot of people get intimidated and they're afraid to annoy the person taking scissors to your hair, lol. It physically hurt me one time to tell the girl I didn't like it when the hair is straightened with the big circle brush and it all flips inward (not a professional you can tell lol) and I asked her to just put waves in it with the flat iron. It all worked out but I didn't want to be "a pain".

I just watched this obviously months after it was posted, but I felt the need to comment anyway. A Hairstylist’ first intention is to please their customers. This is hard for people to understand, and they often get defensive when asked a lot of questions. But, those questions, and the client’s truthful answers, are necessary to ensure the services to be performed have the best chance at success. Unless you’re both mind readers. Wouldn’t that be great?! Lol To anyone getting their hair done by someone new, please approach the stylist as a student, not the teacher, and give her or him a chance to do a good job for you. If it’s not what you expected, ask for some adjustments. That’s perfectly acceptable to do...albeit with kindness and patience. Don’t overreact and blow things out of proportion, because that behavior serves no one. We have all had bad experiences, and they are all justified in their reaction to a really bad haircut or whatever the service performed was beyond repair. It does happen. But, most of the time, hair can be fixed in one way or another. Just be mindful of the intentions of the stylist, they really do want to please you! Xoxo

I probably have not ever stepped into a high enough quality salon bbbuuuttt that’s because all of previous experiences getting my haircut have been horrible. I had a woman who only spoke Spanish, ok, that can happen in the region I received the service. I asked for layers in my hair and she chopped the “layers” so long and inconsistent that I ended up with a mullet! This was for prom of course and my hair grows incredibly slow. I had to wear my hair in a ponytail for a year! I now do all of my own hair which is cutting long side bangs and trimming the ends lol

This was a good video :> I didn't like most of the end results from hair dressers I've been to because in my town, we have a theme where customers are not suposed to be taught anything. They're suposed to just go in, get it done, then leave. Consultations aren't really a big thing here. So... unexpected things always end up happening lol And it's why a lot of people tend to stick to someone when they find one that works out for some reason. I don't think it's to scam them, honestly. Speculating here and mixing in with some other hd's, I think it's to avoid sounding like they're "preaching", because while some customers are thrilled and happy to learn new info.... some kind of find it offensive in some way. I don't know how to explain it lol I guess it's like a "how dare you try to tell me my shampoo sucks. You're just trying to get me to buy your products so you can profit off me" sort of deal. It's a very mixed personality area, so there are a lot of mismatched products being sold to the wrong people just to score a profit. I know I've worked in some places where it legit was a scam and my stomach just couldnt' handle it. So yeah, most salons here just try their best to do what the customer asks and see's what happens, because most will still pay even if they don't love the end result. What I didn't like about past hd's was that before I'd go, my virgin hair would feel nice, and after my service, my hair would feel great for a day, but after the first wash, it would feel like... dry and "strawlike" in comparison to what it normally feels like. Then I'd remember hey, yeah i did smell my hair burning when they were blowdrying it.. thinking it was normal because my hair is curly and tough to blowdry lol... It wasn't until I started to get fed up and just avoided going for like years. When I "came back" I decided to just avoid blow dryers, and when I told a new hd "no blow dryers/irons", she actually respected that, and i saw an instant improvement in how it feels. Eventually I got experimenting with better quality products at home, and that made a huge difference, so I think back in the day, I think whatever good salons tried to do to my hair, I'd gradually ruin it at home with the regular stuff I'd use. Now I'm investigating the "sheering" cutting technique, because I'm seeing contradicting info on it. Some say it's actually really bad for ends, others don't. As well as how sharp scissors are. I don't think everyone replace or sharpen their hair cutting scissors as often as they should, because they're apparently really expensive... and salons here for the most part seem to be struggling since there's a lot of competition. There's one almost on every corner. even across or next to eachother sometimes, fighting for eachothers clients... and a lot, A LOT have been closing FAST, which I never noticed until my mom went looking around for something to rent, and talking to hd students, most don't seem to make it here. Anyways, as a customer, it's tough becoming knowledgable. It's not like I'm willing to go to school just to understand how to communicate with hds lol And it's also tough getting info from someone who's scared if they upset me that I won't pay them. (You guys have a tough job) And the internet has a lot of contradicting info available... I think I'm going to try something totally different the next time I go to the hairdresser. I'm going to ask them to examine my hair, and ask if THEY can show ME pictures of what they can do with it! lol I wonder if that will fly by them lol I know that's whack... but.. I'm tired of showing them pictures and them explaining how this cannot happen, and end up just giving me something I already have, which I never really liked in the first place (long to my mid back, all same length, layered ends, and frame around my front face jaw length).. This style has always weighed down my curls and stretched them out, which was hard to give volume since evernthough I have a lot of hair, it's actually considered a thin type to them. Everywhere I go, a lot of hd's get scared when they look at my long curly hair x.x but this place actually hinted to me in a quick explain.... that basically they're scared to cut a lot off and give me a big change because usually people with long hair like this can't handle a lot cut off. Afterwards, this hit me. This was why everyone's been giving me generally the same cut lol So... I did something... a little nuts recently o,o I snipped it myself lol I can't describe it now.. I mean I do love it actually lol but you know.. it's majorly uneven lol and I'm trying it out for a few weeks before going in to give them a heart attack lol I did this for a reason though! It's to get the problem out of the way, because if I do the big change myself and hate it after, I have only myself to blame, and my hd would be in the clear. So now when I go to them, they will be fixing it! and that, I'm expecting, would make them feel better, because the "damage" is already done and not by them! I hope this is a good plan lol Been thinking about it for weeks now.

This isn't just applicable to stylists. I had my own clothing alterations business, and there are clients who just aren't worth it. "I'm a good customer, I bring you a lot of business, can't you give me a discount?" No, I can't. It wouldn't be fair to my other customers, who also bring me business. "Your prices are so high!" No, actually, they aren't. However, if you want to check around town to compare other places, it is your absolute right to do so. "You know, I could do this myself, if I had the time." Well, I guess you're going to have to pay me for my time. (Never said that last, but I wanted to.) BTW, I think I've got your mom beat on the "low-maitenence" thing. I haven't had a haircut in years, and even then, I just trimmed the ends myself. I think the last time a professional cut my hair, I was in my early teens. I do style it, but it takes me less than two minutes to twist it up into a bun and pin it with a hair slide.

If you always get bad stylists, maybe you're just going to chain salons and should probably stop lol. I always had bad stylists because my mom only ever took me to Great Clips and Smart Style. They don't understand what I ask for, and some of them just.. aren't good at cutting hair. Like, I asked for layers at SS and they like.. didn't texturize or blend it at all. So it was like stacks of hair and just.. so noticeable and bad. When I lived elsewhere, I found a hair salon that wasn't part of a company, and they had the first stylists that EVER gave me a good haircut. After we moved away, I took a 1 hr trip to get my hair done again and unfortunately, they were closed. Got my haircut at a chain salon ONCE after moving, then remembered an old family friend has her own salon and have been seeing her for my hair ever since. I'm actually planning to intern with her and HOPEFULLY work for her when I graduate. I do plan to move about an hour south again, but I''d still make to drive for her and that includes if I were to work for her. Her salon has the exact environment I want to work in and I already know her and get along with her. I also didn't know at first that she was charging me at a discounted rate for knowing me my whole life. Since I'm in school for Cos, I asked her about how she determines her prices because they're pretty low and she's good at what she does. She told me "Well, I give you a discount. But my normal prices are what they are because of factors like location." I was just super surprised that she gave me a discount. I never asked for one, never joked about it. I appreciate it, but discount or not, she'd still be getting 25% tips lol.

Loved this video! I have such a weird question. I always get a 5ch mixed with a 6r on my ashy level 3 hair with Paul Mitchell hair color. The girl I go see is amazing but recently she's been only working certain days that I have to work myself and that I can't get an appointment in to see her anymore. I recently went to another salon where they used a 5mr in Matrix hair color (level 5 mocha red) because the salon manager had better availability on days I didn't work. I told my original hair stylist why I had to cheat on her but after getting my hair done at this other salon I feel like I liked the color better because it was pre-mixed and intensely more red. How do you feel about clients like this? I love being faithful to someone who does a great job but if I like my new color better and I can always get in with my new stylist anyway is it really wrong of me to switch up where I go and get my hair done by?

  • @styledbysamvay

Absolutely not! Do you!! If this new stylist works better for your schedule, then you have to just do what works. And liking the color she uses more is just a huge bonus! Some stylists unfortunately make the mistake of taking things like that personally, when really there's nothing personal about it. It's all business.

I’ve been doing hair for 25 years and it’s still shocks me how some clients are just loyal to a fault, going to the same stylist sometimes for years never loving the results and still being afraid to change. I’ve always had the policy with clients if someone still unhappy with my work after two sessions I will recommend that they try someone else. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with switching stylists. people have to find someone that they are compatible with not just personality wise but the way the person does hair their technique the way they approach hair is different and not all clients are compatible with every stylist. Like Sam said it’s nothing personal it’s just business.

I rent wedding decorations, I had a lady about 2 years ask me for quote I gave her the prices for the specific items she was looking to rent told “that’s too much ill give $$.” I told her “ma’ am these are my set prices I can’t rent them at that price. I understand we all have a budget to stick to and that I might not be the best choice for her. I normally offer a discount if I get a client who rents from and they go over their budget with a bit and start taking things off like once I had a bride go over by like $55 she was very clear she didn’t want to go over so I just waved the $55 cuz she was willing to pay full price not complain she saw she was over she started taking an item she wanted off to not be over I told her not worry about it. But this other lady decided she would name the price and it was so low I couldn’t do it, she offered to pay a 1/4 of what my regular price is. Its crazy!
