Sitting on my grandmother's porch in Jamaica, an Asian man comes up to the gate. I expect to hear an Asian accent but out comes this incredibly thick patois Jamaican accent. All kinds of people live in Jamaica. I've seen a lot of Chinese and Indian people there.

I have been around Jamaicans for 25 years and more! I don't even know when Jamaicans are speaking Patois anymore, it just seems natural to me and I understand 95% of it. All you really have to do is listen. I find the people who say "What did he say?" fail to just listen. I mean there are some sayings and words that they may use that I don't know but I get the whole understanding of the conversation anyway.

lovexsqualor...my dear, it's a choppy English...we read, write & understand English better than speaking it - it's weird, but ah suh it guh! Yes, we are of a British cultural background, but 80% of us in the region - the Caribbean/West Indies aren't white (English)...so, if you're not in an upper class setting, you will hear it everywhere! The small percent of whites in the region or upper class people understands it, but will rarely speak it...say, like you are in a supermarket & someone were to speak loudly & coarsely in the patwois...people around will give a nasty look, as if to say, 'speak properly you idiot or how far did you go in school?!' 😁😉

It is. Its english mixed with spanish, the languages of the igbo and yoruba tribe and including french. I am also positive that our language also comes from the taínos of Jamaica that spoke arawakan (which is why we call them arawaks) for example Jamaica comes from the word XAYMACA. Then the spaniards turn it into something they could pronouce hence Jamaica so even our country name in Spanish. But the language is mainly english. Words like *A* as in mi aguh tu di paak. A means *to* like in spanish. But its like a *ing* word for us instead of saying i am going to the park. Jamaican English Creole or Jamaican Patois is fun and i enjoyed studying the linguistics and history of our language today.

It's more than just broken English. It's mixed with Twi, Spanish and other west African languages. Patois actually has more in common with Jamaican Kromanti (known as gypsy) which has little to no English at all. Patois has many words that are not English words at all and there's no English equivalent to translate some of those words/phrases. We also have grammatical rules when it comes to our words & phrases which is why when some people think they're speaking "Jamaican" (which is funny because we don't call it that - it's patois or Jamaican creole) they've phrased it in a way that is unintelligible to us. So it's funny when people think they can chuck anything together and think that they're speaking patois 😂 smh

Gorgeous. That’s a chocolate beauty right their. My fam is from Jamaica and a bunch of them sound like her and have the same skin tone as her. I’ve never been to Jamaica yet. I kinda wanna see the women their, growing up I’ve known Jamaican/ black women are born gorgeous models.
