@@951000jerome Purpose built furniture and generously sized aquariums. If you do a console with a top that's the same size as the tank, it won't look like you just plopped the tank onto a table and said, "Good enough." You can also build niches, or half walls to put the tanks on, so they seem less random. Sizing the tanks so that they're a feature rather than an afterthought is a good idea too. Like, if you're going to have an aquarium, it should be roughly the same size as, or larger than, a television that you would use in the same room. Dinky tanks, like the ones you see lining the walls of pet stores are always ugly. If you're going to do it, make it a feature.

One thing I’ve found helpful: put an accent light in the farthest point of the room. It makes your eye look at that furthest-away corner, making the room feel larger. It can be a tiny lamp on an accent table or a picture lamp above some art.

Yes! That’s what I did to our house too. I imagined islands on various points of the room, as a sort of visual interest. A tall open shelf, my sofa, my work desk. I realized three of those form a triangle that just anchors the place. The power of three. I made sure to put the lights of my room only on those three places at varying heights. BOOM, it’s like magic.

( North facing northern home - so basically no light) Fortunately ( 😭😂😭) I had a flood from my neighbour above me so took the opportunity to paint everything bright white. Did this with the outdoor rug I ordered. Our deck isn't huge, but I wanted a rug to define the sitting area, so picked up the west elm outdoor rug you mentioned in a previous video as it's close to the stain colour of the wood. I vent w eggshell blue velvet draperies in my bedroom bc soft blue-green is that room’s accent to cream->sand + varm oak, and I needed something to block the Nordic summer sun (which rises at 4am 😬). The rest of the time they’re just a vertical dab of soft colour, no other window treatment. I went for a similar solution in my small, fairly dark dining room - white on white cotton print drapes that can be pulled out for privacy - like when away from home - and strictly neutral strips of fake frosted glass. There is still light through, no privacy issue, no feel of bulk and the pure frosted look adds to the scandi (somewhat) strictness of my home. No other treatments, and the dining room has a full glass wall to the private atrium/courtyard.

I have a mid century teak coffee table that lifts up, has two pull out leaves and becomes a dining table for six. My favorite piece of furniture ever. Hope a manufacturer will read this and make new ones. 🤔😉 A mirror under a plant helps boost the light the plant is getting. It is not much but every little bit helps in the winter.

Color itself does not make a room smaller, neither does the lack of color make the room bigger. Color can mean cozy, my tiny dressing room and smaller bedroom are cozy with a deep navy and white contrast in trim and closets. At night the color kind of disappears. Lack of color is not always best:)

This was fantastic! But mirrors for small spaces is probably the worst-kept secret of the interior design world. That tip has the same energy as “try throwing a waist-cinching belt on it” did in the early 2000s... except the mirrors actually flatter our spaces! 😆

I don’t know if you read comments, but I have yet to see any interior designers do a video on how to blend your living room with your dining room when they are essentially both in one big room but have for example, allowance for different hanging light fixtures, and in my case, are essentially divided by a walking space of about 5-6 feet that lead to French doors to the backyard. Please, please, please do a video of what works and what doesn’t when they are combined! Should rugs match? In what way? No rug under dining room table? Seriously confused. Thank you for all the ideas you have been sharing! You’re the best!

While you don’t want big poofy overstuffed furniture, trim, tailored but large three-seater sofas and sectionals can still work very well, so long as you can get around the room, open windows and move about without smashing into things.

Condo apartments are getting smaller and smaller, but furniture manufacturers are slow to follow the trend. I lived for years with a loveseat while dreaming of a couch I could stretch out on. I recently found a Canadian manufacturer that now makes a condo sized sofa, which is about midway between a two and three seater sofa, but having only one choice is limiting, although they do offer some options in firmness and leg and arm style, and fabric, of course. I still live without a coffee table though since I can’t find one narrow enough (about 12 in.) to fit the space. A sofa table, but coffee table height would be perfect ... I need a skill saw. I love your channel. Thanks a bunch for sharing your knowledge.

Lisa, I do love you, your energy and how generous you are sharing all that knowledge. However, one thing bugs me a bit. Where I live (central Stockholm, Sweden) a small space is not a bedroom where you can fit both a double bed and a daybed. You are considered lucky if you can fit a king size, 2 side tables and move around it 😃. I would love to see more ideas on how to make furniture work for multiple purposes. We will continue working from home well into fall here and most of us need to make do with what we have and can modify.

Lisa's videos are ALWAYS informative, among other things, but this one really tops them all. I went to a very good design school but they never gave us specific, factual information like today's video does. I can see how helpful this information would be for someone who is trying to decorate their home without the help of a designer. Yes, scale and function are everything, no matter what: it has to serve a purpose for being there and it has to fit properly. Bravo!

Your videos are my number one inspiration! I think I did well in my 45 sqmeters when it comes to vertical space, furniture, window decorations and definitely with lighting! I opted for a round carpet in my living room since it’s not possible for me to clearly separate lounging and dining space, so to avoid „floating coffee table” effect, I chose that. I have white wall panels on one navy wall in my bedroom but it was so beautiful I could not resist 🤷🏻‍♀️ But everything else in the room is either white or light gold, so that little navy accent is just adding the character I think :) But I think I’ll add a mirror somewhere in that room - that will definitely make this 9 square meters room bigger!

The custom Levolor Aluminum mini blinds we had put in our first house that are in off white matching the walls are still in good working condition. The ones on the sliding doors did have to be restrung. But you can still order parts for them. We have a wall of Windows and it is a pretty clean look with complete light and privacy control. It was a huge compromise between my husband and myself and I am glad we went with the Levolors. Husband wanted these crazy insulated mechanical roller shades that came down like a blanket wall over the windows that allowed no light control or privacy control. Up or down and no style. We had cats so curtains are impossible as they would scratch and climb them.

We had to make two tiny bedrooms into one, because it would only fit a double bed, crammed against the wall. Even after a serious hack injury, my ex made me crawl across the bed to get in it, while he used the open side. Everyone warned “you’ll lower the resale value!”, but it was just unlivable, we couldn’t even get one dresser in the room, and the old Victorian closet wasn’t deep enough for hangers, they just used hooks.

I’m in Australia, and the very light window treatments would make rooms even more sauna like, specially for those of use without aircon. However I do love the way they look.

6:18 That mirrored wall with gold trim is fabulous! But what's up with those metal folding chairs? Should have used clear acrylic chairs there imo. Nonetheless, the lamps, table, vegetation - all so well put together.
