The cool thing is that, when you "reset" the puzzle, you can have the coin facing the other way (i.e. showing "heads" instead of "tails") as proof that you have solved the puzzle.

This was the best episode you have posted in a good bit of time. Anytime the note pad comes out with math-it’s a serious puzzle. :-) I like the way you took the time and explained the gear ratios. That’s much more interesting than just random attempts at a puzzle. Of course sometimes random attempts are the only way to a solution. Thx very much!

Funny enough, another KZreadr by the name Jared Owen recently put out a video that explains how combination padlocks work; thanks to that I immediately recognized the padlock mechanism for the yellow step. The clear piece that rotated the red gear made me think of similar gearbox setups in some Lego Technic sets too. Not only an interesting sequential puzzle but being able to see the internal mechanisms at work could be used as an educational tool as well. It would be very fun to see any other puzzles from this series.

Gear ratio is defined as the product of all no. of teeth on driven gear divided by product of all teeth on driver gear. As the hook is the driven, you would need to flip the fractions in your equation. This number will give you the amount of turns the driver gear must rotate in order to spin the driven gear once.

I think the 'angry' Comments from people (very, very smart people) saying that the puzzle mechanism should have been fully enclosed to make it harder (because they're so clever) and that anyone with their vast knowledge of engineering could not only design a more secure one, but also SMASH OPEN this puny padlock with the sheer power of their minds because they've studied similar mechanisms for years are TOTALLY MISSING THE POINT. It's not a padlock, guys. It's not a security device designed to protect your valuables - it's a puzzle. Its purpose in life is to tease and amuse and distract. That's all. It doesn't have to challenge professional locksmiths; it doesn't have to thwart evil terrorists or foil super-villains. It just has to hold your attention for a while. So engage with it; have a cup of tea and a slice of cake. Engage with it some more. Relax. It's only there to entertain you. Just like this video. Thanks for another great one, Mr Puzzle! :-)

I'll never forget the day I realized just how differently some people's brains work. I was in primary school, and I had just built a paper model of a combination lock. A classmate came to me and told me it was a waste of time, because you could just tear through paper. My young worldview was shaken. I think it all comes down to the practical mind vs the creative mind. Both are necessary to keep the world running, and I wish there were more people who recognized that. I think being able to use both practical and creative approaches are what make great puzzle-solvers like Mr. Puzzle!

I live in Deutschland and can tell you that the German people take your type of comment as being very insulting. They MAY say no it’s ok but it’s not. I have had long discussions with many of my friends here and they all agree that making fun of their accent when they are trying their best to speak a second language is hurtful . That's what I did. But then comes the big red one which is 6/1. Making it overall 6/8 which is 0,75. I think your confusion is that the ratio is always describing the torque increase and the speed behaves opposite. For example is you have a transmission with an overall ratio of 5. You torque will be 5 times higher as in the beginning but your speed will be 5 times lower.

@@Mr.Puzzle Ok, i may have understood what "torque" means wrong. So, if we say "rotation speed" instead for how fast or slow the wheels rotates ... i still ... Hm, the red was the one you estimated to 60, was it? Ok, then i understand. but ... you used the transparent to move the red, i think? Then the amount of red teeth is unimportant, as you practically moved the first white at the same speed.

The instruction sheet spoils it all: 1. Manipulate the yellow combination lock to get the transparent piece. 2. Use the transparent piece to drive the red wheel. This is not a puzzle. All the thinking job is given to you beforehand.

Combination lock is definitely level 1. The Q channel once made one out of cardboard. Lame puzzle, but it looks great.
