I am a complete novice my bro. I just removed a relay from a board for my refrigerator. I used the special soldering iron removal tool. Put solder removal flux on each pin. The tool that I use is not a soldering iron but a removal iron. It has a suction bulb on it and a chamber at the end that collects the solder in it. It works flawlessly. Not a burn mark on the board. You have to wait a few seconds between each pin to let the iron heat back up. Used a very low temperature solder, easily removable, and transfers the heat to the harder solder. The end of the iron will go right over the pin, you press it down until you know it's melted the solder. Always keep the bulb depressed before you start heating up the pin. That way you don't blow air through it and cool it off. It pulled the solder out and off of the pin as if it was a brand new board.

You burned the heck out of that board!

This video shows exactly what NOT to do. Go to IPC training and learn the right way. Notice how difficult everything seams to be, that’s because it’s the wrong way

So did it work or not?

How to burn a circuit board like a noob, get a hot mess of solder everywhere, and risk failing at your intended task. Please use a desoldering iron or desoldering braid/pump when the contacts are that solder heavy otherwise you risk damaging the board which may need bodge wires to fix the damage. Always clean the surface after removing components before reinstall. Also if you intend on removing a good relay to use elsewhere, this would likely destroy it.

Great video!! If the relay is still good and doesnt need replacing - only one point is blown - can I just resolder over it? There's very little remaining of any previous solder...
