How To Smooth An Already Drawn Path In Inkscape
In a previous tutorial we went over how to draw smooth paths, but what if you want to smooth out a path that has already been drawn? That's what we'll be covering in this tutorial.
In short, this is accomplished using the "Smooth" path effect, which serves as an alternative to Illustrator's Smooth Tool.

Screamed at my phone when you showed me Control+clicking a node. I've wasted hours of my life doing that manually. Thank you.

TOPIC REQUEST: LAYERS Hallo Nick, and thank you for all of your quick videos. I think most users are confused by some of the layer functions. I am. Can you help us all with layers, sub-layers, locking, and all those other hidden tricks we can't figure out? Thank you again. I am always delighted to see a new "Logos by Nick" video in my subscription feed. -- Molly J.
I've been using your videos to learn inkscape for years and managed to create over 1000 decals on Gran Turismo 7. Huge thanks for the clear, concise videos. 👍
Control L is the shortcut to simplify. The path effect has more settings but sometimes the simplify command is useful.

Works perfectly man .God bless.
Great to see you back! I've learned so much about Inkscape thanks to you!
Yes it’s great to see you back with such great explainer videos. 👌🙏🏻
Shift clicking the node is so useful. Thank you for the small details!
Hi Nick! Thank you for all of your fantastic tutorials. I previously bought your masterclass and it is excellent and I highly recommend it! I recently got my first job in the design industry using a portfolio of works I made with Inkscape and GIMP. For work I use the Adobe suite daily, but I honestly much prefer the free and low-cost software over the Adobe programs. I continue to use Inkscape and GIMP for my personal work. I love that you are so assertive that you can still be a serious designer without using Adobe programs - it's absolutely true!! Thank you for all the tips, tricks and knowledge, I feel you are partially responsible for getting me this job and I am so so grateful.
I'm addicted to your guides... I've been using them for several years ! Thank you very much !
Awesome tutorial in every way. Thank you.
You're the best nick I've been watching you for years ..by far the best when it comes to explaining things ..thank you so much for what you do GOD bless you always
Nick, thank you for all you do. You're the Man
Your creativity is AWESOME! And your video with its humor, was wonderful! Great video!
InkScape is soooo powerful! I like this simplify tool tremendously!
Love your Master Class!
Thank you so much for this tutorial.
Extremely helpful video, thanks
Thank you Nick 🍀
Thanks! There are so many useful path effects in inkape, its really amazing. I think you could have selected all nodes and turned them into smooth nodes at once though. In case someone has a path with a lot of nodes, that's way quicker!
Amazing content as always 👍 Thank you.
Very useful video, thanks!
Nice! Thanks Nick. Probably could have used that one a couple of times in the past, but thanks, good to know.
omg this is so helpful since i'm new to this design stuff thank you very much :)
Thanks So Much Bro
thanks for your help
Just wanted to say thanks for video, I never use inkscape but needed to smooth out some lines so I could import into fusion360 and extrude some shapes. All the node points were freezing up my computer. Smoothed out the lines and it worked great. thanks for the video.
I wish i knew sooner that holding control and clicking on a node irons it, it would have saved me a lot of time ! Thank you for this info
Thanks a lot
Hold control and click on the node.... thanks for the new information nugget! 👍
I always learn to do something much easier than the way I used to do it 😅 thank you
Gracias!!!
Inkscape is a good program, but as I had gotten use to Coreldraw, I miss some of the special effects you could do with that program. You just helped me find a bit more in Inkscape with this video! Thanks!
wow!
Thank you Nick !!! without that nostalgic ( for me ) into music feel like something something...missing.... 🥰🥰
Thanks again for an excellent video. Is this the same as CTRL L to simplify a path? I guess one difference is that a path effect can be reversed easily.
I have to draw "Spaghetti lines" fairly often and use a similar approach. Draw by pen and the use Path>Simplify (Ctrl-l) followed by manually smoothening of the nodes left. My approach seems to be quicker, but can't be undone that easily. That seems to be the only difference.

“Spaghetti lines” just changed my entire word usage
Sketchbook pro had a tool that would've been perfect for this, it was a brush offset, you paint away from where you click
good tutorial, and this is a powerful feature, but is there a way to do smoothing on the fly using a wacom pen? I miss this feature from illustrator, just clicking option to switch to the smooth tool...
Mandatory comment to say thanks and appease the KZread gods with an offering of engagement… but seriously, thank you 😉
Look like that you are the owner of inkscape ❤
@LogosByNick - In my version of InkScape the Simply Path Effect menu is very different form yours. I'm using Windows 11, Inkscape 1.3.2 - The options are Complexity, Repeat, Smoothness, and Handle Size. Am I even in the right place? Thanks.
I'm a beginner on all this and start with Inkscape because it's free and became familiar to it's environment. Now I'm start to use ai and find it little bit harder also require a lot of device resource unlike Inkscape was light on my laptop. But the problem with Inkscape the latest beta version crashing alot and the shape builder not sufficient like on ai
Help! I just upgraded to Inkscape 1.3, and all the options inside the Simplify path effect have changed! Why?
As a beginner and someone watching this today, the app has significantly changed and even some of the names of the options once clicking the simplify path have changed, found it a bit difficult, but kinda got the hang of it. I'm not sure why my line is displaying so many nodes though, its a whole lot.
How to design certificate boarders?
Hi, just a quick question. When I import svg made in inkscape to Fusion360. Some parts I can't extrude. Is there any ways I can close all nodes or fix the svg? Thanks a lot
My freehand lines keep auto filling and it thinks I'm trying to make a circle. Any way to fix that?
I dont know why but colors are not working on shapes i have already checked optacity its not the problame. Can you tell me how to fix it.
what inkscape version is?

You get completely different options in "Simplify" than I do. I get Complexity, Repeat, etc. Nothing about threshold.
