I have to pause halfway through because OMG thank you so much for going over all of this with so much detail. No joke, I've been looking at so many videos trying to understand how nodes work and you have been the one that successfully hammered it into my brain! Great job, keep up the good work!

8:19 auto smooth is great for when you just want to Inkscape to generate a smooth line for you. In order to show this off what you needed to do was move the node itself around. With a smooth node when you move the node that nodes handle will stay in the same position relative to the selected node. With an auto smooth node when you move the node that nodes handle will change position relative to the adjacent nodes handles. To really see this what you should have done is kept one adjacent node as a corner node and the other a smooth node then move the auto smooth node around to see how the adjacent nodes affect the auto smooth node.

love these videos, this one in particular is great for showing effects on simply shapes. watched some a few years back. after a year away from inkscape, these videos are brilliant. just the right pace. i get frustrated waiting for explanations from other videos - these videos are just the pace, fast but actually informs you of all the details of what is going on. too fast? it's youtube, rewind :). stuck on other basic details then it's fine look at some others. also it is quick enough that anything i kinda know, it quickly gets on to stuff i dont know so i get to learn quickly

12:51 Thanks a lot for the proportion editing. that's what I was looking for. I wanted to increase the size of both upper ends of a v letter in the right angle (both nodes in both ends have different angles) and it just did what I wanted to do by selecting three nodes.

Thank you for taking the time and putting the effort into putting these tutorials up, yours are the most helpful I have seen. When I try to create a path with an ellipse shape applied to it, Inkscape assigns a higher width to it than I want. I can adjust that width in the path effects editor, but as soon as i create another path with ellipse shape, it returns to the older width automatically. Do you know how to fix that?

Nick, To see the effect of an autosmooth node, play with an ADJACENT node. It automatically changes itself to keep the node smooth.

Hi Nick! this is really useful. I am teaching myself inkscape to draft dressmaking patterns, which look much more like technical drawings, and my interest is mostly focused on paths. What I am trying to understand is how to break paths so that I can rotate portions of my drawing. In Illustrator I would use the cut tool, but what is the closest equivalent here, the break path tool? there seems to be considerable differences in the way they work an dI can't wrap my head around what it is.

Thanks for all this information. I’m just playing with ink scape as I digitize designs for my sewing machine. Are use Bernina software for that. But this is wonderful for vector graphics etc.

Hi Nick, completely new at this and have never done anything like it! Somehow I've ended up being involved in learning Inkscape, sheetcam and Mach3 CNC all in a few days. I'm far from it obviously and haven't a clue of what I'm doing! Ha! I'm very interested and amazed by all that is available (for lack of a better word) in these programs. I have 4 more days to learn how to make 60 trophies and 80 plaques for a HUGE show. I don't even know where to begin....your videos are the only ones that I feel like I can actual understand and learn from. Some are just way to far advanced for someone so undereducated in this field. I would absolutely pay someone to do some one on one training with me. This may be something you could look into doing. It sounds like you have the passion and patience of teaching. Please let me know if you have any advice for me!! Thank you so much!!

Interesting thing for me is that: while I don't know how to use Inkscape (hence I'm watching these videos), I'm noticing that it's basically UI for SVG files (for which I know the syntax). I know it may sound obvious, but this is, basically, a SVG editor! 🙂

I do have a question you haven't covered: how can I transform (i.e. move AND ROTATE) a set of nodes? Imagine the end of a tail pointing up, I want it to point down while keeping its shape

EDIT: I know it's possible, I've just done it by accident! Bust 99% of the time, I get the resizing handles and not the rotating ones

With the nodes tool selected, there's a setting in the tool options that says "show transformation handles for selected nodes." Enabling this will give you the same scaling/rotating handles you get with the select tool, only it'll work on the nodes.

hello, i have a little doubt about node handles. is there a way to set the length a handle extends to by inputting numbers like in the X-Y axis offset boxes? sometimes i've wanted two node handles to extend identically but it's very hard to accomplish. btw, there are some other cool things to do with nodes and handles that you didn't mention or didn't know about: • ctrl+left click on a node handle will reset it, if you do it on two handles that connect 2 nodes, the path between it will become straight, but today i learned that there's a button in the toolbar for it • shift+drag from an new / untouched node will make your cursor start to pull a handle out of it as long as you hold the click button • while dragging a corner handle, you can use ctrl to pivot it along its node by steps of 15 degrees (or with certain care, you can keep its angle even it it wasn't originally a multiple of 15). shift and drag to make BOTH of the node's handles pivot freely along their node of origin if there are two coming out of it. alt and drag to keep the node's length and pivot freely. now, you can actually try using more than one of these keys for combined effects on node handles • double clicking in the middle of a path will create a new node, while ctrl+alt+left click will delete it • ctrl+clicking on a node will shift across the 4 node types • mouseover a node and use the scroll wheel, you'll start selecting nodes along the path (apparently in the order that they were created) • ctrl+alt and dragging a node will keep its angle (you have to keep the cursor relatively close along to the dragging though)

hi Nick... this is realy a very helpfull video...thank you so much. i hope you can help me with a problem. ... i import images (jpeg or raster images) to create a vector image in inkscape for cutting sheetmetal with a cnc plasma machine. i am new in this...but i experience some problems. when i ''trace bitmap" in inkscape, i save the file as dxf or svg... when i open the file in ''sheetcam'', it shows double nodes and double lines on some corners. i cant cut the image with double nodes and lines... please advice. regards, johan

Hey Johan, sorry but i don't think I can help you there. It sounds like an issue specific to sheetcam. I don't know much about that.

Nice tutorial.can you help me abit? From editing an image i got 2 circles which i want to scale both of them. when i choose the path tool i get way to many points which is much time consuming to choose one by one the points to scale . Is there any shortcut that will select all the points to a circle ? I hope my question is clean enough for you ;) sorry for my bad english.

Hi QuAD, first of all, Inkscape is free for all because it is licensed under GPL and he is not using the most recent version but 0.48.5 (the newer one caused some unwanted feature changes he described on his blog). Hi, I have a question . When I use Bezier curves in shape "triangle in" they are much more narrow than yours. The line gets thicker but still it's very narrow (on both sides, the difference on it is smaller than in video). Same with triangle out. I can't find any option to change the height of that line, is it possible to edit it somehow? I use newest version. And thank you for the videos, they are great!

If you scale the object up or down with the select tool, it should get thicker or thinner until you convert it to a path

Hey Nick. Thank you for the videos. I am new to Inkscape and I was wondering if there is a way to move the handles of the nodes independently while using the Bezier Pen? I am trying to create vector hair and in all the videos I've noticed the ability to move the handles while creating the lines and I can't seem to figure that out. Any help would be great! Thanks.

I had same question! I finally found out how - click on the node and press "control + C" - it turns it into a cusp node. Control + S will turn it into a smooth node!

LOVE your videos and am so grateful for all that you share! A few months after I began learning Inkscape (from you), I had the misfortune of having my PC die. I replaced it with an iMac, which had it's own monumental learning curve, but in addition to that also had to figure out Inkscape again. Many things are the same, others are not. Do you know anyone who uses Inkscape on an iMac (also now have an iPad...no Inkscape. :'( so I am also trying to figure out Inkpad) who can go over some of the differences/workarounds? I appreciate any assistance you can offer.

Hey, which O.S. do you use? Do you have a custom desktop environment?

The tool icons are hard to see. If you zoom your canvas, it will be easier to see. Plus if you get rid of the black background of the tool bar, the visibility will be improved.
