Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

A long wooden dowel cut into 6" lengths works great, and you don't have to worry about scratching the barrel. I used fishing weights for my mosin nagant, it came out to .313.

I use a single stage press for many reasons. It allows me to inspect each case for the charge and I can trim each case. It takes a little longer but the end result is a premium bullet.

Yes it is a "musketT ball. Speer makes them. I keep several diameter ones around to slug barrels for friends or fellow shooters who want to know the bore diameter. The nice thing about the ball is that it has a very narrow bearing surface. This makes it easy to tap down a bore.

Varget and IMR 3031 works well too. If you can regulate the the port pressure the the burning rate of the powder then you should be fine.

Great vid ammosmith. Friday when school is out I need to go look for some small lead sinkers. Gotta slug the bores on my mosins so I know what diameter bullets I need to buy before I go drop money on a box of bullets and some IMR 4895...

@bobfre1 If you slip and bash the barrel you can damage it. It's a precaution I take and I'm just giving my take on it.

Do not shoot lead bullets in a factory Glock Barrel. It will lead to the point of being dangerous. I recommend getting a Lone Wolfe after market barrel with cut rifling. The polygonal rifling in a Glockl barrel will not engrave the bullet enough.

Try the Lee taper crimp die. It doesn't effect headspace.

@uxcitme If the wood ever cracks, there is a huge chance of it getting jammed into the barrel. Not good, especially if you're using it on a muzzle loader. Brass works the best ince it is stronger than wood but does not scratch steel.

No but it will be hard to get it out. Lube the bullet with case lube. What pistol is it for? An automatic or a revolver?

hey Ammosmith, i'm about to start casting for my .44mag. if my barrel slugs at .430 what size bullet will give me the most accuracy? thanks

It should be ok. Just reduce your load and see if you're getting any excessive pressure signs. I know the PSL can shoot heavier bullets...you just need to watch what type of powder you're using. The Garand is sensitive to pressure too.

If I buy a mold with an advertised cast of .452 diameter and my barrel slugs at , for example, .454 diameter; will I still be able to size the smaller .452 bullet up to .454? I'm curious because I will be casting for a 1911 pistol and have made a commitment to a .452 diameter mold. At this time, I have no idea what the Springfield 1911 barrel will measure using the slug method. Thanks

I suspect what Valetudo's possibly also worried about - and I am too - is the risk of damaging the muzzle crown (esp. of a rifle) when banging the ball in - it looked like you were contacting yours with the hammer when demonstrating on the automatic, or is that just because of the camera angle? If I'm going to slug my .303, would it be safer to do it from the breech end? What calibre slugging ball would you recommend?

If I heard you correctly your Blackhawk cyl. throat slugged to .4515 but your bore was .452. Doesn't that mean that your throats are swaging your bullets undersized to your bore? Isn't that what you are try to eliminate?

I have been wanting to slug my original Trapdoor Springfield carbine. The groove depth appears to be much shallower than the original .008". The problem is that these barrels have three groove rifling. You would always be measuring groove to land. Any thoughts on this?

That would be true at 0, 60, 120, 180, 240 and 300 degrees around the bullet circumference. Try measuring at 30, 90, and 150 degrees - halfway between the points where you would be on the groove on one side or the other. I am not a gunsmith, just a craftsman. Gunsmiths please correct me if I am not taking something important into account.

Not at all. The lead is soft. The pressure I exert on this little round ball is nothing compared to a live round being fired in the barrel.

It's not necessary to reduce leading, but it would definitely make it a better fit, and be a better load.

So..you do this procedure to be able to get the correct diameter when you reload your own ammo, is my thinking correct? And if you buy store bought ammo just mike it to see what is as close as possible to what you have barrell wise? Being rather new to this sort of thing just trying to wrap my head my little pea brain as to what you are trying to accomplish.

Sam Moss - not exactly. He's using a slug to determine his actual bore-diameter so that he knows what size of lead bullet to purchase for reloading. If the bullet is undersized, it causes leading and loss of accuracy - the ideal is to buy a bullet 1-thou' oversize so that it makes a good seal while in the bore.
