Annealing Brass

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Easy way to anneal brass for either conversion or to soften old brittle brass. It's easy to do but you can't let the brass get too hot. Of you do it'll be too soft and will cause structural failure, usually in the shoulder. If you heat the brass too far down the body of the sae you'll ruin the case all together.

i leave my spent primers in and pour some cold water in each casing before i anneal them. just enough to keep the bases cool.

You are indeed annealing the pc until you drop it into cold water . The annealing process requires air dry. By putting it into cold water you are hardening the outer shell of the material.

Yes. It keeps the heat from annealing the body of the case.

@semtech30 Thanks. I've been looking for used .300 Savage brass, unsuccessfully, and attempting to reform .308 into .300 Savage, equally unsuccessfully. For target practice, I have been using 9 grains of Red Dot in .300 Savage and 8mm Mauser, and 11 grains in .300 WinMag, which works really well. Accurate & low recoil.

@EdgarEgner You will be fine. You may get some soot on the case but other than that the process should result as the same as if you're using clean brass. Just don't get the brass too hot.

@danthman114 After. If the brass is too soft it can chatter and leave small bumps on the neck.

You can use the lee case hold for in the chuck of a drill. Spin it with scotch brite (auto grade) in your hand and presto......she's gleeming like gold. Better than new.

@xzqzq This is a while ago but, if your cases are bulged, there has been to much pressure from to much or wrong powder. Use an H4064 or slower for the Savage. A faster burning powder will cause this. Slow it down. Your case size die should take care of the bulge. If not, discard them. Loading a shell should have no restrictions.

@xzqzq Use small base dies to get the case back into spec.

If your case forming anneal before you reshape the brass. If you're just softening brass then it doesn't matter.

No. The 30-06 is a rimless case...You might be able to convert a 30-40 Krag. 7.62x54R is so common that I think that getting boxer primed brass would be fairly cost effective.

Use Tempalac. It gets rid of any mystery how hot your brass gets. Color doesn't mean much except that it got to hot to slow.

@xzqzq There are 144 differnt burn rates per. powder type. From fastest to slowest your Red Dot is #8, and not recommended for rifle loading. It's a shotgun powder and why it bulges your cases. I use a #93 IMR 4064 40gr's. for the savage. Try and get brass from a gunsmith outlet. Google for a burn rate chart and load data from the internet. You will find most anything you need. Load safe.

Good video. I bought some once-fired .300 Savage brass, and about half is bulged @ a quarter inch above the base....enough that I can't chamber and close the bolt.... anything I can do to save this brass, or is it trash ? Tks...

Is it ok to anneal dirty brass? Or do you have to clean it first?

Why do you let the brass fall into the water? Doesn’t that surface harden the brass? If you heat steel and quench it in water or liquid, the surface is hardened.

Darren , if you air cool you are not annealing brass, you are hardening it . The quenching is what makes it soft . That has been know for about 1500 years .

Bryan is right on the mark! Brass is hardened by working it. Everytime you resize your brass you are working (hardening) the brass. Annealing as ammosmith describes makes the brass more malleable. Watch a video on how brass is made and you will see them annealing the brass multiple times as cartridges are drawn out from brass stampings.

MUST be clean....you'll burn in the carbon on the necks...it will take longer...and you can't see the color change.
