How to SKIRT your RV for WINTER with Rigid Foam
Our journey from San Diego to Alaska is being put on hod this week so we can show you what we are doing to prep for the winter!
We took a day and a half to insulate our 2019 Grand Design Solitude in an attempt to lower our energy needs. If you are thinking about doing this, we can definitely recommend this method. It is working well for us and has held up to all kinds of bad weather so far!
We hope you enjoy the video! As always, we are open to your constructive criticism!
My wife (Ashley) and I (Jameson) decided to leave our home in San Diego, California and DRIVE to Anchorage, Alaska in order to be closer to her brothers Adam and Justin who are affected by Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. We will be living in Alaska for the foreseeable future in our 34" Grand Design Solitude RV and are looking forward to sharing EVERYTHING with all of you including but not limited to:
- RV Tour and our favorite features!
- A look at our custom 2019 F-350
- Learning about DMD and talking with Adam and Justin
- Mod and review videos for all of our upgrades
- Everyday struggles
- Wildlife and adventures!
- Camera gear and workflows
- everything else!!!

Home Depot sells extreme weather foil tape it has no red writing on it and holds great all winter and no residue with removal

Agreed - it works great and is quite strong. Definitely looks better too with proper application since it lacks any logos or branding.

I live permanently in a 5th wheel and have MD! Thanks for your support and awesome videos
I like the idea of using the spikes & blocks for strength. I'd say this beats a small trench & gravel.
It will save on repair from shit freezing up!!+ energysavings.
I winter over in my RV for work. Skirts absolutely. I also tape my windows shut, and make a temporary vestibule in front of the door with a 2x2 frame covered in plastic sheeting. Works so well, can keep warm with just a 1500 watt oil filled heater. I also enclose the whole thing with my quilted RV cover.

Where did you get a quilted rv cover?
I'm going to do this. Thank you!
Thank you for this. We are full time rvers from Florida and are spending our first cold snowy winter in the mountains of Idaho. We are prepping our fifth wheel and do not want to spend nearly $2500 on a prepaid skirt to insulate. This is hugely helpful.

We’re Floridians that moved to northern Idaho too!! I am researching what to do and my method was plywood and securing the foam insulation to the plywood, but having seen this it looks rigid enough to hold up solo. Take care!

Great video! Thank you. We are stuck in Nanaimo, BC Canada for the winter due to COVID. We are considering adding a skirt around our 32' class C motorhome using rigid foam. We also have many windows covered with Reflectix which is great. I would love an update on how cost effective the skirt was. Did you recover your $650 install cost? Thanks
Hi Still Problem, is it best foam out on in , some say foil in will hold heat in winter. so to be funny inne or outie. or don't know. Foil blocks radiant energy like sun. SO may keep sun radiant in side other then be reflected away? hard to decide it for me white looks better, foil has printing, so need to paint, be here for at least 2 winters.
Any update on how it did throughout the season??

How about commenting on the residue too? I have a feeling there was more than they expected. I don't want to ruin my RV's finish.
1st: good post! 2:How did if any did it affect your exposed pipes? 3: Results? About me. My wife and I are similar situation Sold Home Florida., Now in Canada with our 41' 5'r New to the cold.. any more tips? -S
How about putting a space heater under the rv in the curtain?
This was a great video!!
Good tips ‼️. 👏👏👏👏👏
How are you dumping your black tank? Do you got to take a panel off everytime?
@stevekornegay5819

I had to build a special access area using foam to pull and push the grey and black handles. It was liftoff panel.
What is the r rating of the styrofoam board?
I used 10" galvanized nails and 8' yard timbers along the inside edge. Put the yard timbers down and put the nails behind them and put the foam board infront like normal and the whole foam board is supported along the inner part of skirting for high winds like 60-70 mph gusts
Thank you for comparing thickness and mentioning structural strength. Also tape. Thank you. You did it for 650 in Alaska for how big a rig(with slide out?) Did you cover it or leave it exposed and hows that working. Thank you so much for this great info. Just found you and subscribed 😎👍🐶 Do you have utility/fuel bills to compare? Please update.

granny sweet ours is a 34ft fifth wheel with three slides (2 large, 1 small). We left the insulation exposed and are feeling good about that decision as so far everything has stayed in place. Also the winds here are too strong for vinyl to work well, as we’ve unfortunately seen from some of our neighbors, so we couldn’t think of any other good options for covering it even if we wanted to. Admittedly we didn’t do a great job of tracking fuel usage before we put up the skirting, so we will have to do a little bank statement research to see if we can figure that out.

Do you have any ideas on what to do for the windows?
can you post a link to the tape you used?
Hey Ashley. I was shocked to find my cousin in a video here. I hope you are doing well. Darius.
Great job. What are you doing to keep you outside water hose from freezing? Does your rig have tank heaters? Ours does but I’ve never used them.
@ashleyb876

Wonder Where 2 Wander the RV park we are at has heated water pedestals, we have a heated hose attached to that, and we have tank heaters. It still hasn’t gotten cold enough to need the tank heaters, but I’m sure they will end up being necessary at some point.
@tomgaghan2915

What are tank heaters
@mesterjess
2 жыл бұрын
@@tomgaghan2915 They are devices which are pre-fabricated or DIY and are installed around your fresh/grey/black/all water tanks to prevent them from freezing due to extreme weather circumstances. Tank heaters may come pre-installed on some units, others will be aftermarket...and some won't need them at all because the internal heat of the unit can keep them from freezing, when the furnace is being operated of course. Hope this helps you.
Why do you kick on the gas eveynight? What’s wrong with electrical?
Great video! In addition to the skirting, did you have to heat the enclosed area to keep it above freezing?
Hey! Great video! I have a couple of questions. I have seen people put a little space heater underneath their skirts, but that was with the fabric skirting. Would that be possible with this? Also, how did it hold put with snow piled against it?
why did you NOT insulate at the front of RV? Would have made your sleeping area warmer
@Hattori_Fujiyama
3 ай бұрын
sleeping areas should be cold anyways.
Does it help keep pipes from freezing?
This looks pretty great. How did the foam board hold up to snow and moisture?
@raituano849
2 жыл бұрын
Rigid board insulation are considered closed cell polystyrene. With the foil outside it shouldn't do anything to moisture. Most brands are fire rated also
Would this be helpful in the summer time too or do you need to remove it when it get warmer? Also do you do anything to keep critters from making a home underneath the RV since it is warmer under there they may burrow in.
