Your statements about get out and make memories hit home. My husband put off retiring for years and he always wanted to travel. We bought a fifth wheel and took a few trips while he worked. When he retired, he took over 2 years to decide on a motorhome. We out a deposit on one, then covid hit. Everything closed. The dealer agreed to hold the motorhome for us for a while to give some campgrounds close by a chance to open. Two weeks after we put the deposit down, my husband was diagnosed with stage 4 esophageal cancer and passed away 8 weeks later. I lost the deposit and gave up the idea of camping. In February of this year I put a deposit on a small 20 ft. Travel trailer. Now I am waiting on it to be built due to supply shortages and labor shortages. I pray I live to get it and have a few years of pleasure before I pass. Don't delay life because you may not live to enjoy it.

@@budsavoy1044 The way I feel about it is if the sales manager of the dealership can live with keeping the money after saying they would send it back, I can live without it. At this point in my life I just pray for good health, peace and happiness. But, as far as deposits go I recommend the least possible amount be put down. And, go with a family dealership if possible. The big ones don't give a crap about you or doing what's right. The dealership I am working with now has a excellent local reputation for sales and service, and is keeping me informed about my order. I wish I had found him first.

In the past year my wife and I have heard this story many, many times. Too many times. We are at 60 and put a deposit down on a travel trailer which also has to be built due to no inventory. Blessings and many amazing travels to you.

also an RV tech the only thing I would add is that some brands are just worse than others. for example, grand design is one of the worst brands. and most brands don't honor their warranties.

They're horrible investments, especially new. Buy used save. I will be getting a used one to live in permanently. New, $250,000 class A 30 footers will be selling for $40,000 in six years with very low mileage. Buy a new one is worse than buying a timeshare. They plummet in value quickly.

I would never even consider one an investment, anymore than a cruise or an exotic vacation. You just need to weigh the recreational satisfaction against the cost.

The best RV is the one you can afford. Start with what's in your budget and move up as your budget allows.

Well said plus always a good used one as new ones depreciate as soon as you leave the showroom. Most people feel there will be a flood of slightly used RV's that were sold during the pandemic from people that can't afford them or those that didn't like the experience

Politely disagree. The best RV you can buy is the smallest one you can. Same with boats. We used to boat. Our first was a 14 footer. 2nd was 19. The 14 got out more than the 19, but both of them got out far more than many other larger vessels. Why? Easy to manage. If you have to fight with it in one way or another EVERY time you use it, you aren't going to want to use it. Smaller RV means smaller towing rig (or less demand on an engine/transmission for motorhomes), easier driving, ease of parking, less maintenance, smarter packing, etc. Maybe I'm a bit old fashioned, but do you really need to bring your espresso machine, your TV, have a washing machine, or dishwasher, full sized fridge, fireplace, kitchen with an island (seriously??), etc. Isn't the whole point to get away from the house, not to bring it with you? Seems to me that somehow from when I was a kid to today, RV camping has transformed from getting away to cool destinations while roughing it to driving to a parking lot with neighbors and noise levels like apartment living.

@@ainechlairnicbhuachain9936 No espresso machine ? Ohh lord. I ain’t drinking no mud water to be adventurous. And the days of slapping my draws against rock and calling it a wash is over lol. On the real thou. Times have changed. So is tech and comfort.

Every point was spot on. Full time RV'ing was my wife's lifelong dream, hitting the road, seeing the sights and making new friends. I made her dream a reality shortly after my mom passed away, so we sold our home, vehicles, furniture and I basically quit my job, 7 years later and many thousands of miles later I have absolutely no regrets about this decision.

That's awesome! I'm someone who's looking into full time RV living. Mostly going to be stationary living at an RV park in town and commute to work on my motorcycle (I'm going to get a toy hauler for that purpose). I've seen some similar floorplans that I like from Forest River (315Pack12), Keystone (Carbon 358), and Grand Design (Momentum G-Class 320G). As someone who's got a lot of experience doing this is one of those brands better than the others? or one of the brands you think I should stay away from?

@@tomoates8568 It's really a matter of length of the rig, weight, and what vehicle you have to pull it or attach it. Downsizing your belongings is a daunting task. There are other considerations, do you plan to travel infrequently or just park it permanently? My wife has added interior insulation to her cupboards and windows to keep it toasty or cool given the time of year. Another factor is do you have any pets, dog or cat? Their age and ability to move about play a factor in your rig size and accessibility. I would recommend that you find a rig that has crawl through underneath storage.

@@diveranger100 Thanks for the response, I really do appreciate it as I don't know anyone personally who lives this lifestyle. I would plan to travel maybe once a year at most, the rest of the time I'd be stationary. I'm not too worried about space, I'm single and really don't have a lot of belongings. Minimalistic lifestyle is what I've been going with for some time. No pets of my own. I live in the Houston TX area so mostly I'll be worried about keeping it cool, heating would be used maybe a few months out of the year. I'll be doing a lot more research on RV life before I pull the trigger and give it a shot. I'll have to buy a truck to do my towing still as well, so I'm looking at those options too

@@tomoates8568 you mentioned a toy hauler in another post, looking for a truck you want something in the 2500-3500 range, I own a Ford f250 diesel and it does what I expect it to do, a fifth wheel towing package can be quite expensive but don't settle for the cheapest setup go for midrange to the top of the line because it's a heavy and very expensive home on wheels your pulling behind you. Being in Houston you do know about the humidity, get yourself a good dehumidifier because a buttoned up windows closed and doors shut you will get mold and mildew buildup, (we used to live in Texarkana). Your roof membrane is rubber so use only cleaning products specifically for rubber, DACOR has several things on the market to accomplish the task of cleaning, polishing and weatherization your rv. A lightweight power washer is another must have item so long as it's not to overbearing, something similar to what you find at do it yourself carwashes.

Ex-RV sales guy here. I was always up front with my guests and discussed many of these topics with them. I agree on the not waiting, get going with the fun and memories. I would often tell people to rent before buying and that they need to be handy with tools. When asked I told everyone these aren’t built to be lived in b/c the appliances weren’t built for everyday living among other items. Also, I went one step further - - - If we didn’t have what they wanted I sent them to other dealerships and had them speak with someone I knew who was honest, which there are many. Now you have 6 things an RV salesperson will almost never tell you. Later….

This is incredible! "You're going to die" was like a slap in the face. Lost my mom, mother-in-law and my husband of 45 years ...all in the past year. And here I sit wasting time researching day after day after day. Thank you Matt for a reality check. Overall Bottom line I guess is: have an emergency fund ready to support you when that "down time" occurs. ~S

The buy it today part hit home. My dad worked for 40 years, retired, started making plans and died 6 months later. You have a good heart and I respect that.

I've been watching your channel for over a month now as my wife and I contemplate purchasing our second fifth wheel. At first I thought your videos were a bit silly and comedic but soon realized there was some real value in your channel and understood that your presentational tactics are purposeful to keeping it on the light side of things. As I continued watching I actually grew more fond of you and the others who join you in your presentations. With that said, after watching this latest addition I would in fact enjoy purchasing an RV from you and giving you a good ole fashioned handshake. Keep doing exactly what you are doing Matt, responsible people have to work for a living and you've taken your career of selling RV's to heart, which most of us hard working people can appreciate.

For those that struggle for long periods of time trying to find the perfect RV, here's a reality check. The house you purchased was not perfect either. Yet you made some awesome memories in that house. God bless.

I see couples over thinking the research process daily. One thing u can't research , the learning curve. U will look at the rv lifestyle differently a year later , no matter what

Concerning point #3, before retiring, an older coworker of mine once mentioned that the one regret he had in life was that his wife always wanted to have a pontoon boat. He always put off buying one saying that would be great later for retirement. However, before that happened, she came down with a bad case of Alzheimer and needed full time care. She never got what she wanted because he put it off. So when my wife said she wanted a camper, we immediately went out, looked a many campers, decided on one we thought was great and bought it. After enjoying it for a year, we found several points about our first one we did not like and traded it off on another more suitable one. So at this point we really like the one we have and our dealer took good care of the trade off. Matt, you hit the nail on the head!!

By far the most honest video about the RV industry of all time. Mat has definitely earned my respect.

This is exactly what I needed to hear about buying an RV or trailer.

Thanks. You have pulled back the curtain and exposed what anyone anticipating the purchase of an RV should know. Over my lifetime I have owned several RV's from a towable to motor homes. Buyers need to exercise good judgement and common sense. Don't overburden your budget, understand that unexpected situations will arise and all will entail some form of cost. As I approach my 90th year, I no longer own an RV but true to what you said, I have many, many beautiful memories that my wife and I shared over the years while RVing.

It's like a regular house with really thin walls. My husband and I were full time for 11 years. We had the best adventures and made great friends. He passed in March and I loved our life so much that I will continue this life style. I must say that an extended warranty was a good investment for us.

Rv warranty is a joke to begin with (read the contract) but double so if you're full-timing. You'll be living at the service center half the year!

Great video! I retired in 2013 at age 55 from Federal Service. My 2 children as they were growing up tent camped, then later we owned 3 pop up campers. My children who are 31 and 35 now have such great memories of camping. My wife and I always wanted a Motorhome and upon my retirement we sold our house, down sized to another home and bought a Coachmen Leprechaun which we used for 5 years. We only sold it because my wife’s parents were having health issues and her dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and we convinced them to move in with us. It took us about 6 months to sell the house we had and purchase another house that had enough room to accommodate my wife’s parents. We always recognized when we bought the RV that the day may come that would require us to help our parents which we are honored to do. We then had to sell the RV because we could no longer use it due to my wife’s parents condition. We are grateful that we had the chance for 5 years to follow our dream but are equally honored to have the ability to help her parents. We trust that if it is meant to be we will one day buy another RV and get to travel more again. It is important to not put off following your dreams!

As a salesman myself, been honest is what puts you on another level! Keep up the great work. 💪👍

Your Dad's story touched home. My Dad was seriously physically handicapped. He had his own Agri-based business. Hard physical labor involved. Doctors tried to convince Dad to go on Disability.....he wouldn't hear of it. In the early 80's Farmers were going broke, after several customers who owed large amounts to him filed bankruptcy, Dad had to close his store that he loved. The day after he closed the store he died. Broken heart. He was 59. He was one of the smartest men I ever knew: He was a Fulbright Scholar: taught Agriculture in Persia in the early 50's. He easily could have been a College Professor but he loved Farmers and Farming. Like you carry your Dad's handiman tool, I use a cane due to my physical disabilities.....it was my Dads cane. Every time I use it, it's like holding my Dad's hand. God Bless our Dads Matt! You're a hell of a good guy, your Dad would be proud of you!

Number 3 was great. We spent too much time researching our first rv and it was traded in two years. We did not research much for our next RV and it was used regularly, for 12 years and 4 years later we sold it for nearly nothing just to get rid of it. Our current RV was not researched at all. I know there will be times I regret the purchase, but I also know that our family will enjoy it more than if staying at a motel.

That’s what I’m talking about Matt !! I tell everyone you are a straight shooter, great dude !! Love the honesty. Keep it real.

We looked and looked, as far as 200 miles away, and when we finally found what we were looking for . . . it was advertised in our local paper and just about 12 miles away. Go figure. Since then I discovered rvonline.com just a few miles away and they have RV listings from all over the USA. But we like our 25 year old Aerbus.

Also Matt, thank you for the honest answer to my financing question at the Tampa show. I asked two sales people the same thing, and both said "No problem. It's easy", but you made it clear it would be a bad idea for me. Your honesty means so much! 😎

As a contractor one thing I made sure of my corporation is honesty. The other quality. Then on time and all the other stuff but my point... Honesty is the most important feature of any type of sales and service to help someone like you and I the most. I agree with your post. This video helped me with the way he told the answers to the questions I've had for so long while shopping I needed answered and STRAIGHT FORWARD is the way to say it.

We made so many great memories in a $3500 1982 RV. So glad we took the risk. Looking to upgrade now.

After watching more of your videos and especially after watching videos of other RV salesman on KZread you have grown on me like no tomorrow! I'm glad I found your channel. Thank you for this info! My husband and I had talked about getting an RV, but didn't think we could work out the finances since we were already retired. We traveled a little here and there since I'm retired from the Navy & have access to Space A flights, plus we bought into a "Vacation Club." I wish we had pursued the RV. Covid hit and we didn't get to travel or do much of anything else except a big trip last year and visit one of our kids. He just passed away two weeks ago. I'm going to sell just about everything so I Can hit the road. I miss exploring and I want to see our kids, grandkids & other family. They are all spread out across the country. Only two nieces live within 65 miles of our city in CO. Now I just need to find the best rig for my needs by the middle of November. I still have lots to learn.

After many years of RV'ing 3 to 6 months out of the year, I have to say you did a real service to new RV'ers with this honest video! You are totally correct on all counts!!

Matt is the King of the RV world. He deserves more recognition.

Perfect timing to watch this video, as I retired last month and have been doing my "research" for well over 2 years in preparation to purchase an rv. Matt I been preaching this to my wife of 45 years, about the wasting of time! Just bought an Arctic Wolf 44 foot fifth wheel a couple months ago and yet to camp in it! We run a business and you can't get her away from it long enough to get out of dodge, so to speak. We are leaving on our first shakedown trip this weekend finally! I want her to watch this video you made so it might wake her up I hope! This is a very imformative video and I will be subscribing! You tell it like it is. Some are rated for full-time living but a RV is like a house - maintenance of a home is essential to remain in it.

This felt like life lessons. Thank you so much for this, Matt. I've been watching your videos for a year now and love every single one of them. After some traumatic events that happened recently, my siblings and I finally decided to get an RV instead of putting it off and coming up with "What if"s that weren't helping at all.

Thanks for the thoughtful presentation. Have family with RV's and with boats. Cousin's quote about boats, "First time you step on the boat and hear something, it's something breaking. If you don't hear anything, it already broke." He's owned boats for more than 50 years. Liked the comment about tomorrow's, too. So glad to have taken all the vacations and cruises with my wife while we were both able to travel easily. Now looking for that next adventure alone.

Thanks for putting this out there. We bought a 2021 Bounder (from your team 😊) and had several items fixed before delivery but had other things break on our shakedown trip. Fortunately the hubby is handy so he has been able to fix things on the road. And you are so right about not missing out on Today...tomorrow is not guaranteed.

A very good point. Many people, including myself when I first started shopping for class A motorhomes, don't think to ask about test driving one. Once I found out it's ok to ask for a test drive, I drove every single one on my list. I quickly found out that they do in fact handle differently. One that was on my short list was quickly eliminated after a drive because it had sloppy steering and a bad tendency to nose dive when braking in a gradual turn. It was also extremely noisy inside while on the freeway, and we're talking about a brand new coach. If a dealer balks when asked for a test drive, it's time to walk away. Besides that, you may just discover that you are intimidated by the size and never be comfortable behind the wheel of such a large vehicle. That's the worst kind of buyer remorse.

I enjoy all of your videos and I appreciate your honesty. My wife and I have been retired 10 years and we got into RVing long before retirement. I can't remember how many or what type of rv's we have had, but we both enjoyed everyone of them. Currently we own a 2016 Coachman Freelander motorhome, and a converted utility trailer that we tow behind with our side by side UTV, an extra fridge and sleeping quarters installed. We like to boondock for extended periods and sometimes need the extra refrigeration so we can travel with less fortunate family members and still avoid extra trips to the grocery store for more food. More to the point...I feel like this video boosts your credibility and I will continue watching your videos. Thanks

You are so right about getting out there and camping without taking years to choose your RV. I'm mechanically inclined so we bought an older Itasca Motorhome, we have used it so much and I have kept up with the maintenance and repairs. It's been one of the best things we have done and continue to do. Great video, thank you.

Thank you for this video. My Husband and I have been researching for the perfect motorhome and researching over and over again but had yet to pull the trigger on the purchase . Matt, you're truly one of a kind! Most RV salesmen will tell you just about anything just to make the sale. Your honesty is refreshing and almost unheard of based on my experience. Thanks for being honest so that people really get a good idea of what they're getting into. RV's aren't cheap and they aren't cheap to live in (especially with the new gas tax that went into effect today!).

Matt this is awesome for being real. I appreciate your attitude for teaching. Last year we sold our 40 ft. motorhome because my husband didn't feel comfortable driving any longer. Sure it was always expensive but worth it to me. We made life friends camping in our 20+ years traveling. I miss it something awful. Keep up the good work. Thank you.

Great video, so much truth to the story. When you mentioned about your dad it hit home for me. I worked on trucks for over 40 year's. And most of the time didn't like my job. But it paid the bills. I've been retired for 6 1/2 years and spend several month's a year in our 5th wheel. I do 95% of my own repairs . And helped other's. That job I worked has paid off . And we've met a lot of great people and made a lot friends ( especially when you help them with there RV's problems) But it's been a good time. Just don't forget you are going to have to adapt and improvise . Even people with deep pockets have stories to tell about RV problems.

I can so relate to what you said in this video. My husband passed away this January. He was never interested in camping of any kind and the last 5 years of his life he was too sick to travel, so I went alone or with a girlfriend once or twice a year. I decided to buy a Class C because I didn't want to tow a TT. I did some research to decide what kind of RV I wanted and made an appointment to see 2 or 3 models and General RV. I left with a purchase agreement. Life is too short and I wanted to enjoy it while I can. I am 71 and maybe can enjoy this lifestyle for 10 years and maybe it will only be 5, but I will enjoy traveling with my 2 little dogs. As far as problems, I am on my second problem in the first month of ownership - a recall and a gas tank issue with the supply chain situation that may make finding a gas tank difficult. Coachmen is working on it. I don't regret my decision and have even decided to go to the Gulf of Mexico for 3 months this coming winter. That is an adventure I am looking forward to having. In the meantime, I will stay more local with the price of gas. Thanks for your reviews and your candid comments on each and every one.

Matt, VERY GOOD video. We've been camping for 31+ years, have had 6 campers, and many memories of failures, breakdowns, water squirting through out our pop-up drenching beds, DP engine cutting out on climb through WV mountains...can't wait to get the next RV and add to the memories. You said it, RV's are not for everyone.

So important are those memories because after all the stages of grief that you will suffer through after the loss of a loved one at the end of it all you have is those cherished memories that will help you reflect and get some comfort. We bought a used truck last year and it came as a package deal with a Lance 992 truck camper. I’ve always wanted a truck camper because of their versatility. We really enjoyed and now we’ve traded that camper on a 2022 Lance 1172 truck camper which should be delivered this spring. Make those memories while you can brother. Subscribed. 👍🇨🇦

Thank you Matt for your in depth knowledge and concern for buyers instead of a sale! I think this clear educational video should be a standard for all inspiring RVers looking to make a purchase. You really laid everything out in clear and precise language so that everyone could understand that RVing is not a game, there WILL be challenges as you stated and people will be without a home for an indefinite period and they MUST factor all of the things into their decision to purchase an RV. My eyes 👀 are wide open thank you. 😊

We left our jobs early to fulltime and workcamped to supplement our income. We now settled at an RV resort in Arizona in a park model. We're not rich but planned to travel in the summers. It hit home when you talked about living for today. We both have experienced health issues in the last few months. We're still hoping to travel, but who knows if we'll be able to. Don't put off living. It doesn't have to be expensive. Invest in solar, a generator, and boondockers welcome for some cheap camping. We treat ourselves with rv resorts, but not everyday

Nice! I appreciate your candor and totally agree. We rented through the APP “outdoorsy” last summer. Tried Class Bs through that experience. Bought our first RV, a class A last November, drove it NJ to FLA and back, realizing its “too big” so we traded it in for our current class C that’s just right. Its just right (for now) who knows what is next! My point is that we had a blast in each one. Learning along way. Even though I am a planner nothing went as plan. Just get out there. That’s the beauty. There’s something available for everyone and every budget. Just go enjoy exploring.?

Love your video's Matt and I 100% agree with what you said, especially the part about tomorrow isn't promised to any of us, so take action today. My wife and I are action taking kind of people and watching your video RV reviews PLUS going to the dealers and shows to see different floor plans in person helped us to find the "perfect RV for us" within a couple of months. Seeing it on a video is NOT the same as seeing it yourself in person. We thought we knew what we wanted by doing internet research, but hated it when we saw it in person. Since purchasing our Thor Delano, we have visited both Yellowstone (before the floods) and Grand Tetons, then drove south to MS to visit friends family. Having the RV made the visit with friends and family so much comfortable, convenient and enjoyable. It also allowed us to stay much longer than we would have stayed without it. You are so right, its all about making those memories.

Hi Matt, you must not have any motorhomes to review. Matt, I agree with all those 5 points you made. To me the best time to buy an RV is when you can afford it, and you have to really think about how much time you will have to use it. You don't want to spend a lot of money and have the RV stored someplace where it costs a lot of money and use it twice a year. Thanks for your video.

These 5 things are all so true!! ESPECIALLY being prepared financially in the event you can't be in your RV for even one or two days....have money saved for that. Thank you Matt for making this video. I agree with you on all points, 100%. I have been camping regularly for the last 35 years and my wife has been for the last 57 years (she started at 6 months of age). We have camped in a Travel-Lo, several tent side popups, a couple of hard side, A-frame trailers, a travel trailer, and now a Class-C motorhome. We live in Chicagoland and have had to have emergency service in SD. We won’t give up our house, but with retirement coming next year, we will go out a lot more. Even if you have a dealer you really trust, they won’t be able to think of everything to tell you. You will need a very experienced salesperson that is extremely ethical. When we bought our 2022 Class C, they didn’t tell us that Ford will have to take care of chassis issues. I had to find out from Coachmen. They were nice about it, but I had to find a Ford dealer in Chicagoland that would/could fix a motorhome. Not all Ford dealers would do it. Also, if your RV dealer isn’t local to you, you will need to make sure that you can get your RV serviced for warranty issues locally or expect to drive some distance to get your unit fixed. These are things you need to consider. On top of that, where are you going to store your unit. Many municipalities have laws against parking in your driveway for more than a couple of days (load and unload from a trip). There are a lot of things to consider. Is it worth it? ABSOLUTELY! Being in nature and away from the rat race, even for a week or 2 a year, will refresh you.

Hey Mat. First I have to say I love watching your video's My wife and I just bought our first RV. Yes we bought it at General RV in North Canton Ohio. We got a Prime Time Avenger 16FQ. Ohio is where we live. When we were picking it up this past Thursday ( 7-22-21 ) the panel that shows the Battery, Grey Water and Black water levels was not working right. The button for the awning, lights water pump worked perfectly. So you are right on what you said about having issues. Service said it would take 4-6 weeks for Forrest River to approve the part. This didn't stop us from buying or bringing it home. Patience is a virtue. Thank you again for all your HONEST video's on RVs.
