FINALLY....someone i can resonate with. Great video. I'm 52 and just picked up the guitar. I've always been frustrated and undisciplined. That changes now. I'm gonna learn how to noodle before i leave this planet. Most appreciated. Always appreciated George Benson's sing-a-longs. Thanks again.....Peace!

Yeah... agree... Sing it.. play it... Especially teaching your kids ...if they can sing it that's half the battle... then try and get them to play...👍

Priceless information for someone who can't even focus on lyrics because I only hear the words as a melody.

There is definitely something to this. Barry sings all of his phrases while playing. So did Bud Powell. Great lesson.

Thanks! Yeah, I've watched clips of Barry saying "Bird said this" and heard you talk about it too I think - which is really the same as saying "Bird SANG this..." - all about playing with intention, from the inside out...

Helps with imagination too, instead of just going to the guitar you can sometimes sing a run or a set of notes before transferring it from your vocals and then imagining and placing it on your guitar

Great examples of players who really connect with the instrument, instead of just playing patterns. It really adds the feel and emotional attachment to the notes being played. I ask myself, WWDGD “what would David a Gilmour do “? Much appreciated Gary, thanks.

Great lesson. I bet the majority of guitar players are too self-conscious to sing so we put all of our creative energies into signing through our guitars. What you're showing here is how to do both, they are one in the same. And if one is really uncomfortable with others hearing them sing, turn up the volume of the guitar and sing and then over time reduce the volume of your guitar to let your voice come through. Our voices are what make us unique and isn't every guitar player "trying to find their own sound"? We already have it :-)

My apologies if I’m a bit late to the party, but when I was 4-5 yrs old, my dad taught me slide on a 1 string ukulele. Relative Pitch is guaranteed! (It worked for Jimi - yes, dad was a Hendrix nut) Trust me, it works at any age. All the best, good sir/lady.

Thank you for this great lesson. I have been told that I am tone deaf for many years, so how do I make the connection from my vocal sound to hear (my ear) the right pitch and try to hum with it ( I think this is more of a singing lesson). Thanks again. I am more of a visual learner so these and your other lessons are a great help. I need to learn to hear with my ear along with my learning to play the guitar with my fingers. My appreciations.

Darren Lu thanks Darren! Doing simple Ear training exercises will help and then just singing any lick you learn, and singing and playing simultaneously - also singing something simple and then trying to play it - basically the things I did in this video but keep it super simple - just 1 or 2 notes at a time and go slow!! Have fun! Gary
