It really depends On What kind of genre you make

I was wondering if they even had sidechain when they were making house music for the first time in late 80s

@@Bittamin It would have had to be manual and not automated the same. However, the gate techniques got especially popular during turn-tabling / scratching

@@Bittaminnot sure if they used it in house back then, but sidechaining absolutely existed although it was a hassle to set up.

If anything, this bass pattern with the straight beat just loses energy if you duck too much.

@@Bittamina normal compressor on both the kick and melody/bass with a really boosted kick gain will reduce the kick gain to normal and the melody/bass down to 'duck' while the kick hits. Not as clean but normal compression was used to do this stuff since the 60's
yes i love using multiband side chaining for a more subtle effect! it rly depends on the genre tho bc sometimes the ducking sound works better.. in this case i think the first method sounds best lol

Multiband would be the best option for instrumental music like rock and so🔥🔥🔥

I definitely preferred the subtle ducking. This bass pattern has a strong forward-motion that I think gets lost with the pumping. Different frames of reference :)
this guy gives such good tips that I've debveloped a pavlovian response to his face
I like the pumping sound. it has a cool sound and rhythm effect.

That multiband tip helps a lot
Thanks to these videos I now understand how multiband compressors work, instead of just ducking volume you can duck different frequencies. Thanks guys!! 😊

reminder, if you are making hip hop/rap DO NOT SIDECHAIN THE KICK TO THE BASS(unless it’s for an efffect).instead, simply carve the kick some room in the bass(if you think it’s sounding muddy together)

its not a completely objective no no, just preference. especially for genre’s like trap metal where the kick needs to rip thru the mix

This is the same for every genre, not just Hip Hop. (The part about creating space). So many people misunderstand sidechaining these days. They think it's about reducing volume but it's not. It's about cutting frequencies at specific points, not volume. About 20 years ago we could only cut volume automatically, but these days we have so much more control over side chains. We don't even need to use compression to sidechain these days!
Man I love these vids I’m new to MP after Djing for years, learn so much from these

lol I know how to side chain but for some reason yesterday (just started using this plugin) I had the ducking inverted. I couldn't figure why it sounded completely wrong for like 20 minutes. 😂 But also I didn't realize I could do the multi band side chaining.
Very cool!!
This is the best
Virtual riot in the house. I ended up switching to Duck because i only had the demo, but it was solid whatever i was able to use w it
I just send the kick to the bass on auxillary channels and put a compressor on the bass that gets triggered by the auxillary channel every time kick hits.
Thank you sidechain master

I've never seen Multiband sidechain before. Anyone know any song examples that do it or know how to tell when it would be most useful?

Like in the vid, if ducking everything out of the way turns out to be too conspicuous/harsh/disjointed/obvious, you can duck the lows HARD while leaving the mids and highs less effected. That can smooth out the jarring suddeness of everything else disappearing when the kick hits.
Still can get lumpy because the sub energy will be perceived later.
Beginner vs pro should be never said in the world of creativity.
Level 4: fuck sidechain altogether
The sound of obvious side chain is extremely cheese 🧀

Yes, ShaperBox 3 is a paid upgrade. The upgrade price depends on how many Shapers you already own, and you can also choose to upgrade just one Shaper, should you only own one Shaper. Log in to see your upgrade options: www.cableguys.com/login.html

That’s actually the 3 worse ways to side chain. If you use the right kick and bass, you won’t need it. You can just use a gate to duck from 3 to 6 db… which sounds clean and very natural. Not like a what you show…
I hate that the jump to beginner is so big.... sidechains, ducked curves, and all the other stuff in other videos. I see but dont get like 60% of the content... musicproduction still feels overwhelming

Hey! Just take it one concept at a time, enjoy the process, and don't stress if you don't understand everything yet. You'll get there! :)
I mean number 3 was kind of ok... I guess. But it's still not accurate. Because like i said before a good produces doesn't turn down the *volume* of the bass when the kick is playing. A good producer *cuts* the frequencies of the bass that the kick peaks at when the kick is being played and visa versa. And that goes for every single sound we create! If our Synth lead peaks at 200hz, we cut 200hz from our kick, snare, high hat, pad etc etc.. And I've mentioned something like this before about fixing it "in the mix" and this is my point! If you just randomly pick kick and bass samples/presets, you're not going to fix that in the final stages of mixing. That's why the better option is to mix as you go. If your kick peaks at 100 hz and your bass peaks at 100 hz, you're screwed. So one of them has to go. It doesn't matter which, but one of them does. If you cut the sound on every quarter note of the bass that's just dumb and will sound like shit! If you cut the 100hz frequency of the bass when the kick is playing your bass will just sound week. If you cut the 100hz frequency of the kick that will sound week. And that was my point about "fixing it in the mix" It doesn't work. You can't do it and have a strong track. If your peak frequencies overlap you're screwed. Which do you cut? Whichever you cut you make week. So mix as you go. Sound design as you go. Choose samples as you go. But don't just create random sounds and then try to make them sound good together if their peak frequencies overlap because you will end up with a week track.

Sidechained dynamic EQ is different to the technique we call 'sidechaining'. There is a place for all these techniques. Obvious volume ducking is used in many genres for a purposeful pumping effect.

Wait, your channel is Cableguys? Didn't you make Curve? If so, you should know better!
Paused it as soon as i hear number 1. Number 1, no no no no no! What are you telling people! Sidechaining is about creating space for frequencies, not timing! If you kick peaks at 100 HZ and you bass peaks at 150 HZ then then no point in side chaining. In that case you're just making your track sound weak. you don't soundchain volume, you soundchain frequencies!
@Cableguys
Жыл бұрын
Well, even if your kick and bass likely peak at different frequencies, they will cover other frequencies too. And we show multiband in tip 3, so you can target for each frequency band. But yes, the example no1 is very drastic, please forgive, that's mainly for demonstrative purposes - more likely you'll use multiband and won't set Mix to 100%.
