How to Shorten Jeans - Two Methods
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This sewing tutorial shows you how to shorten a pair of jeans two ways either by cutting off the excess fabric and losing the original hem or a 'cheat' method whereby the original hem stays in tact. Even if you're an experienced sewer we have some great tips for sewing bulky seams, which can be useful for sewing jeans and coats or bulky fabrics. The cheat method is particularly useful for children's jeans and gives you the option to lengthen the jeans again at a later date.
I'll show you how to use a bulky seam aid and will recommend the right sewing machine needles, thread and marking and measuring tools to use, you can find links to all of these and our website below.

Great tutorial. Never knew about this tool humper jumper, my mom used to rub a candle on thick parts to stitch smoothly and that is what I used to do. But this one is a great idea. Top stitch thread is another good thing. I have watched many of your videos and will be waiting for more.
Very enjoyable tutorial. When I have a small hem to turn (like the 1/4") I first stitch a line from the edge of that amount -- I know it's an extra step, but it makes pressing it up so much easier than using a gauge or tape measure every time. Just fold it over on the stitching line! Thanks for your methods - am in the process of doing jeans hems and wanted to check your video out. Thanks for sharing this.
Thanks for the tutorial. I always put my pins at a right angle (across the fabric) as you can get your presser foot much closer and it is much easier to remove pins as you’re sewing. In fact if your stitch length is long enough you can often stitch right over the pins.
I’m going to get one of those little tools to help get over the bulky seams. Thank you for that tip. I use a zipper foot to do the second method I find it helps get right up to the original seam nicely.
I learned of a great tip years ago that takes a lot of bulk out of the seams. Whack them over a block of wood with a mallet! Do this just before sewing so as not to disturb the the fibres. You'll still need the bulky seam tool, but get much thinner seams. 👍🇬🇧

What a great tip, thanks for sharing.
this was a great tutorial. I just shortened two pairs of new jeans for my husband. Normally, we would have had to bring them to a tailor.
Thank you Lucy. I’ve just done the second method on a pair of chinos. Unfortunately, I started to cut the wrong bit off! I managed to salvage the trousers but now have one old method and one new method. My husband won’t know the difference but I have learnt a good lesson. Check twice before you cut.
This is a great tutorial. My Nan always used to shorten my Mum's, my sister's and my jeans but never taught us how to do it. I've just taken up sewing in lockdown and want to attempt it 🙈

Brilliant, I'm so glad it was helpful to you and I'm sure you'll love sewing as much as your Nan.
I was so worried that you would burn your fingers with the iron. Great video.
I am very short and have become the queen of shortening my jeans, capris and sometimes shorts. I too have a humper jumper and also a foot that I got for my Pfaff machine that has a little ridge under it so it snuggles up against the bulkier hem so it sew along comfortably (not explained very well sorry and I have forgotten what the foot is called) but I sew along the top of the half inch changing my needle position so it is, say one eighth of an inch from the top of the hem, then the ridge makes sewing close to the top smooth and easy. That along with my jeans needles and top stitch thread and I'm all set. I always enjoy your videos and have picked up lots of tips. Thanks for all your hard work putting these videos together, I really enjoy them. Greetings from Australia.
Very informative and seems easy. This is probably the most easiest , informative tutorial
Excellent video. You explain it very well and make it easy to do.
I’m an experienced sewer and I always wondered what that tool was in my sewing machine tools, now I know, never too old to learn new things, thanks Lucy 👍😀

That's brilliant to hear Anne, i didn't know for ages either and I think many other people are the same, but it is such a handy tool. Happy sewing.
Wow, that iron sounds dangerous! :o) Thank you for a very clear, excellently done tutorial.
As another pointed out, I turn the legs inside out so that the bulk is on the top when you see the round. This way you don't have to worry about catching the bulk on the bottom when sewing.
It is worth mentioning that the second ( "cheater" or tuck ) method works best with staight legged jeans. If there is a taper or flare in the pant leg, it could be much trickier as the tucked sides would be different circumferences. In fact, I would not recommend it unless for straight legged jeans.
Thanks a lot for this wonderful tutorial. It is just perfect! Now I finally know both methods. 🙏
Thank you for the lesson... I like that it was very detailed and has helped me so much..
How did you know I would be hemming jeans this evening? 😄 Thank you!

Thank you very informative.
On the children’s jeans you can turn them inside out, and sew the inner circle

Great video. What stitch length and tension might be best please?
Can I overlock jeans with all purpose needles or will I need to use jeans needles?
Hello, thank you for the tutorial. I have a pair of bootleg jeans and the seam at the bottom seems a bit wonky. I know in the video you say to measure from the bottom as it would be straight but what do you do when the bottom is wonky and not sewn straight?

Because I'm very short, I often have to remove 6 inches in pant length. If the pant has a flair outwards like bootleg I must remove fabric higher up the leg where the leg is straight OR taper the side seams near where I am hemming to make it fit. Skinny pants legs are the easiest to hem. Most women's plus sizes have an inseam of 30-32 inches. My inseam is 25. I try to buy a longer capri at 19-26 inches, if possible.
When doing the children’s jeans would a zipper foot work better as you could sew up close to the bulk.

Great idea, you could certainly do that and change the needle position if you have the facility to do so on your machine.
Nice way of shortening the kiddies jeans
